Ghostbusters Set To Return?
It appears that all four original Ghostbusters may be returning to the silver screen – to pass their mantles unto the new school. We get the following scoop from out friends at Dread Central:
According to our source all four Ghostbusters — Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson — have agreed to return to the franchise. A few years ago that would have been downright unbelievable, but considering they all just got back into their roles for the Ghostbusters videogame, it’s more than plausible that they’d do it on-camera one more time.
Now here’s the really interesting part; though not much is known about the plot, apparently the ‘Busters will be handing over their proton packs to Seth Rogan and the crew from 40 Year Old Virgin!
If they can get the full ensemble cast of The 40 Year Old Virgin to assemble as the Ghostbuster’s replacements – It could be cool. I am very pensive about it however. I don’t like the “passing of the guard” aspect of it. I know some may think that this is great news, but If they are going to do another Ghostbusters film; I really want to see the old gang back together and kicking ass one more time.
If they reserved the passing of the packs till the third act; I could live with that. It closes off the trilogy for the original four, and sets up a future film (or so) with the new crew. I think that this would be the best compromise, and make for the best story.
International Friends; I am interested to hear your thoughts on this news. Please share your thoughts.

…who you gonna call???
/film says this rumor is doa

Doug,
When I first read that headline I almost pissed myself! I’d pretty much given up on another Ghostbusters movie! At first I wasn’t sure about having Seth Rogen and crew involved, but then I remembered that Paul Rudd and Steve Carrell were in the 40 Year Old Virgin, so now I’m PUMPED!! With Rudd and Carrell on board, and the four original Ghostbusters and Ackroyd and Ramis writing..
THIS WILL BE GOLD. Dude…Sweet!
G_A_Y
Who am I supposed to call now, Seth Rogan?
Holy Shit ! Ive been waiting for this since GB2 sucked in theaters. As for Aptow’s crew, it would be great if they curved the dick jokes and stuck to the nature of the first film.
I loved the idea from a few years back that they were going to do the same thing with Chris Farley and Chris Rock and others, it was going to be something like “Ghostbusters in hell” or something.
I like the idea of Rogen and Rudd and the other guys from 40 year old virgin. They have great chemistry and comedic timing, so it should be great.
Wow:
Ghostbusters + 40 Year Virgin Crew = Horny Buncheroos!!!
if they absolutly must do another i suppose this is a pretty good way of doing so. i heart Paul Rudd in a ghostbusters suit
Dear God, I hope not.
I am tired, TIRED, of the remakes.
Hollywood, the people who originally put out Ghostbusters??
They came up with that all by themselves.
Let’s keep that up, shall we?
I would imagine that the whole passing of the torch theme would flow throughout the whole film, but they can’t just let them take over from the get-go so I can totally see it happening in the third act, and maybe only as one of the final secenes.
“You know how I know your ghost is gay? It has a poster of Asia”
this sounds like a lie. I don’t believe it.
I’ll take it with a grain of salt, but if it was to happen, i’d be totally up 4 it!
And i think thats deffinately the best way to do a 3rd, i mean, it is a buisness after all…
It would be nice to see the old gang back in action!!! But I’m not sure that the people from the movie “40 year old virgin” is the right people to take over!
I would be for it but it’s not happening. If you look at the Ghostbuster universe as if it were real then of course there would be turnover like there is in any job.
If done right I think it could be great fun but what I don’t want is the guys being more or less carbon copies of the characters from the original. They would need to be there own people and I would like some hold overs from original group in some form one way or another.
holy carp!
the superfreaks (Judd Apatow’s crew) as ghostbusters?
http://www.slashfilm.com/wp/wp-content/images/ghostbustersrumors.jpg
that would be absolutely awesome
however i dont think it would work out having them & the originals in the same movie. the original are too old now. but it would be cool if Judd Apatow did his own ghostbusters movie(not a remake) with the superfreaks & only Dan Akroyd returning to “show them the ropes”
even though that link above says its not real, i hope Judd Apatow would make this.
just imagine the ghostbusters getting high….. haha
The 40 year old virgin crew would be funny, but considering the franchise is still aimed at kids they would have to reel it in HARD and I think taking the cuss words away from these guys would make them less appealing.
Seems it was just a rumour, and I am actually happy for it.
But I hope they do another ghostbusters movie.
OH MY FUCKIN GOD!!! I ALMOST SHAT MYSELF!!! I LOVED THE GHOSTBUSTERS MOVIES AS A KID.
I loved the characters so much and I am a huge fan til this day and I even was a fan of the shitty ass cartoon show on tv. It was shitty but as long as I got to see my favorite characters in one form or another I was happy.
AND now in this new Seth Rogen/ Judd Apatow era that we are now in (and the fact that I am a rabid fan of those guys) and having them in as ghostbusters????!!! that shit would be so tight and so perfect.
Just think of it. They are just characters in the movie. Maybe somebody is one of the ghostbusters’ son or something or assistant or some shit and then (like doug said) they (for one reason or another) come in in the third act as “the new much younger ghostbusters of the 21st century”)!!!!
This sounds so tight. Now I am really excited. HOWEVER, I am just excited because I never thought of the idea and it just seems so perfect but I also know it could be complete bullshit.
BUT Egon WAS Seth Rogen’s dad in Knocked up. CLEARLY Egon and Apatow are cool so maybe that has something to do with the rumors or (crossing my fingers) this very “true” piece of news.
hell yes I am down…
Oh my, I just had an erection.
“the 40 year old virgin crew” is way to vague for this story to be true.
That sounds like someones fantasy than any fact.
Years ago ackroyd wanted to do a third one handing the franchise of to chris farley and a couple of other SNL guys who were hot at the time.
This just sounds like a variation on that old idea.
HOPEFULLY they had better be serious this time and not just talking hypotheticals here. I’m SO tired of them teasing me with a third installment of my favorite franchise OF ALL TIME. At least they finally got their butts in gear and after over 20 years of waiting (!!!) are releasing The Real Ghostbusters. Now to Aykroyd, Murray, Hudson, Ramis and Studios…STOP SCREWING AROUND AND MAKE THIS MOVIE ALREADY!!!!
If the Rogen-Apatow brand of comedy was a religion, then I’d be a Christmas and Easter follower, not an every Sunday guy. I liked parts of their movies, but never loved one start to finish, so I’m an itsy bit skeptical of this news.
However, any chance to see the four original GBs back in the jumpsuits is a good thing. The original two films didn’t mine the territory as fully as a series like Rocky or Indiana Jones, so maybe there’s a better chance for this third film to not feel as played out and stale. If you think of some of the bizarre stories the animated Real Ghostbusters stories told, there’s lots of directions this could go.
Word is that years back, Ackroyd wanted Ben Stiller, Chris Rock and Chris Farley for his Ghostbusters: Hellbent script — so sometimes waiting years for that greenlight can be a positive move. I feel much better about the 40 Year Old Virgin guys than I would have with late nineties SNL leftovers.
And to anyone sneering at the idea of the original four sharing screen time with the new kids, remember this branching out concept was virtually laid out in the original film when Venkman says “The franchise rights alone will make us rich beyond our wildest dreams.” Which gives me hope that we see them all retired and lazy CEO types, who have to pick up their proton packs when the new guys royally screw up on the job and they need Murray and the boys to bail their fat out of the fire, Space Cowboys style.
This is NOT true, people.
If you did 2 mins of research, you’d know that Bill Murray hasn’t signed up to do a voice for the game, let alone a third movie. He is the reason this film hasn’t — and won’t — get made.
CHRIS J is WRONG about Murray and the Game if you did your 2 min. of research you would find he DID voice the game which is now having problems getting distributed. ALL the original cast with the exception of S.Weaver and R.Moranis came back.
The movie is WISHFUL thinking though, especially with these guys…it would be too good.
I heard the rumor was fake
Those guys dont sound too bad tho.
I had some the frat packers in mind like Vince Vaughn, Wilson Bros, and Stiller, but The 40 year old virgin crew could get it done too.
But I like the original cast best coming back out of retirement as old dudes.
It would be nice to see the old gang back in action!!
I have heard that Bill Murray absolutely REFUSES to do anymore physical roles. He remains adamant that if there will be one, then it will be CGI animated with all their voices. All four guys agree that they DON’T want the Ghostbusters to age and pass the torch. This is their brainchild, and they refuse to give it up.
As for the prospect of a “pass the torch” type of trilogy, I just don’t think it would be the same. Ghostbusters without Ray, Egon, Peter, and WInston would be like a Punisher movie without killing. But then I have never much cared for Steve Carell, so… A new team would just be guys in suits in my opinion.
