Mark Miller Wants To Take Over Man Of Steel
It looks like Millar is calling dibs on the next Superman film after scoring success with Wanted. We get the scoop from our friends at slashfilm:
“Since I was a kid I’ve always wanted to reinvent Superman for the 21st century,” said Millar. “I’ve been planning this my entire life. I’ve got my director and producer set up, and it’ll be 2011. This is how far ahead you have to think. The Superman brand is toxic after that last movie lost [a good chunk of change], but in 2011 we’re hoping to restart it. Sadly I can’t say who the director is, but we may make it official by Christmas.”
Millar is slinging shit and trying to push out the previous Superman team with bravado and a plan! I have no idea if his coup will be successful, but if he comes up with a zinger of a director for Christmas – will the studios consider it? Could his ambitious pitch and preparedness entice the studio to switch drivers?
Most seem to agree that Bryan Singer dropped the ball with the last Superman film. Should the powers that be allow him a second chance, or would you guys favor the reigns be stripped from him and handed to Millar and co? Also, would you personally prefer a Superman sequel, or would you favor a reboot at this point?

I would have to say a reboot because Singer’s “vision” kinda crapped out with Supe having a kid…everything else was acceptable but that….and besides i LOVED Wanted
I would like an official sequel to part II, and not some half ass sequel to parts of part 1, and 2.
Superman Returns was a sequel to certain segments of Superman, and Superman II which made Superman Returns a mess of a movie.
Maybe they should just reboot the entire franchise.
I wouldn’t hate a reboot at this point, however Supes has to remain iconic. If you fuck with him too much, the shit will hit the fanboys.
Two words: Giant Spiders.
No to a reboot. It worked for the Hulk because the first one had so much to not like about it. I don’t think that Superman Returns has a whole lot wrong with it, other than a lot of people didn’t like the kid….wait, maybe that is a huge problem.
FUCK I don’t know anymore.
The better question is when DC comics is going to have DC Studios like Marvel?
I LOVED Returns, so I want to see a sequel to that.
Personally, I’m for a reboot mainly because I want to see some other villains besides Luthor or Zod. (Brainiac, Bizarro, Doomsday, Darkseid: my preferred villain line-up)
Also, a reboot that started the story over would also give me hope for a Batman/Superman movie (but that’s my wishful thinking.)
I’d also say no to a reboot. Yes, Supe Returns had some problems, but overall nothing that would warrant a complete reboot. Routh was great as Supes, as was Spacey in the Luthor role (although I’d prefer the sequel to be Luthor-less — time to move on to a different villian).
It would be great if they could somehow fix the problems with the franchise — something I’m sure a talented enough screenwriter could do — and forge ahead.
I’d rather just have a sequel instead of a reboot. We all know the Superman story, how he got here, how he was raises, where he works etc… so we really don’t need to get into that again.
Honestly, the weakest point for Superman Returns was the whole kid thing, which I truly hated. So I say for a sequel they need to kill the kid off and let Superman get on to more important/destructive things.
So I’m all in favor of a sequel
Mark me down for a reboot. Superman returns was awful, just soo boring. I would like to see better action from the Superman Franchise, so I am obviously going with the guy who did wanted. Singer alwasy seems to come up short with regard to superhuman action.
I don’t mind a ‘reboot’, but not some of the canon changing stuff that has been proposed in the past. Superman Returns was not a reboot, just a restart.
The villain lineup is important. We need Lex Luthor to be there, but he doesn’t need to be in the foreground. What about Lobo? or Darkseid? Give Superman a physical challenge, not an emotional one.
Or, maybe Superman doesn’t warrant his own movie anymore, and should be relegated to the star of the “Justice League” movies.
if a reboot means another origin story then i’d say no, but really at this point DC needs something to bank on other than batman
the problem w/ superman now, is that are you gonna confuse people with a reboot RIGHT AFTER the last one.
My vote goes for a sequel, definately. Im prety sure Singer has learned, the hard way, that a Superman movie NEEDS a good amount of action, and that people want to see Supes do more than just LIFT stuff.
SO, lets just let Singer use everything he learnt (techniques, etc)while doing the first movie and make a killer 2nd one. I hate when they re cast so Im all for the sequel.
I personally enjoyed most of J.J. Abrams’ Superman screenplay and that was a ground-up reboot so I’m open to the idea of a new Superman. I think Singer’s filmed tasted like warmed over 4-day old pizza — true, it’s still pizza and any pizza is better than no pizza. But it left me wanting to order something fresh.
My only concern with Millar is that, as talented as he is, he’s something of a nihilist who seemingly enjoys showing darker depravities to formerly heroic icons like Captain America and Iron Man, etc. I’m not sure I want Superman to be anything less than noble and earnest.
I enjoyed RETURNS, but I can see why a lot of people didn’t.
However, yet another reboot would not be a good idea I think.
Get another director and other Lois Lane, but keep Routh as Supes and the current plot line.
I say rebbot only because of the kid….strongly doubt they will kill him off..unless they wanna do another Supe movie and pretend Returns never happened
ya man no giant fucking spiders…fuck wild wild west long live kevin smith!
The director is definitely going to be Tim Burton.
american director – check
known director to mainstream people – check
has a long history with WB – check
could almost get any stars he wants -check
attached one point to the project but withdrew-check
action director – sure if you count Batman, Batman Returns and Planet of the apes
I loved Superman Returns, but there’s just so much fan animosity out there for Singer’s take and the “Angry God” angle makes me iffy about their future takes. Most people it seems want a brick dropped on the notion of Super allergic kid.
In the Post Iron-Man world of Comic Book Movies, Superman could stand to benefit from divorcing itself from the movie continuity of the 70’s that (I grew up with and love and) Returns and Smallville have kept alive and let the comics take the helm.
I’m not ready to kick Singer to the curb just yet because I’ve enjoyed pretty much everything he’s done, with the big exception being SR. It was a compete failure in my eyes, and the more time passes the more I question the choices he made with that one. Heck, as I’m writing this I’m almost convincing myself it WOULD be a good idea to let someone else do it.
I’m not convinced that Millar is the guy to do it, unless he is planning a fresh but true-to-the-character approach.
I need Singer and a sequel.
I could see a Miller Super-Man, but not before Singer gives use a sequel.
I could see a Miller Super-Man, but not before Singer gives us a sequel.
I still prefer Singer because X-Men 1 and 2 were almost perfect films.
I’d like to see Millar and Singer work *together*.
Why throw the baby out with the bathwater? Keep Routh, and everything that worked, and carefully meld with the freshness of Millar’s new “21st Century vision”.
Win win!
(1 vote for Bruce Campbell as Perry White!)
I hope Singer keeps it myself.
As much as I didnt like Returns as much I hoped, give Singer another chance with a sequel. From what I read it seems and you would hope they have learnt from their mistakes and should make next one full on action.
Also 2011??
Dammit, we waited so long to get Returns and I was looking forward to the next installement in 2009, at least that’s what imdb says.
Isn’t there enough time to get Singer to knock another one out and if it blows too give the reins over for a third one in 2011
I can’t wait another 3 years to see another Superman movie, but still yeah I agree you cant rush these things.
I loved Superman Returns! It was great!
The problem with letting Singer doing another one was that Supes Returns let people down. If they let him do another one, and THAT sucks, then the franchise is in BIG BIG trouble.
Heck, I mean, didn’t Supes Return ALREADY underperform expectations? It’s gonna be like The Hulk. Another director can’t save the franchise if they’ve already screwed it up TWICE, except for maybe years later (ie, Batman).
I say it’s time for a reboot.
Start over and make the Superman franchise about action and adventure. For far too long Superman movies and TV shows have just revolved around the personal life of Superman, his emotions, his relationships… SCREW THAT.
There is no need to waste the ultimate superhero on such stories in this day and age. We have FX wizards who could produce some fantastic action. We have the ability to give Superman some amazing and threatening villains to fight. Why settle for a bald guy with a green rock?
In this day and age, the whole Clark Kent angle is not plausible in the slightest, so the less focus on that the better I would think. But instead, Lois and Clark’s relationship is always front and center.
I’d love to see someone give a new and fresh take to a Superman film. And if it could tie in to the already successful Batman franchise for a potential joint film down the track… even better!
Fix Miller to Millar in the news title.
Get ready, here cometh a whirlwind and a r-a-n-t.
“re-boot’ I see that word a lot in the comments by the int’l friends. In the story, I see zero indication that Millar wants to ‘reboot’ Superman. But ‘restart it’ in a way that he always wanted to: Millar said he wants to re-invent Superman for the 21st century and that is a huge difference. We have heard talk like that before, as Rodney hinted at above when producer Jon Peters had his hands on ‘Superman Lives’. Even non-comics fans were angry with Lex Luthor (rouge CIA agent) being from outer space and the giant spiders (recycled for the ‘Wild Wild West’, my, how well that went over) to Superman not even being…well, not being Superman. In fact, that is EXACTLY why it took so long to see another Superman movie. Nobody could make the changes work. Not with a straight face, anyway.
“I’ve got a director lined up” Millar boasts. “The Superman brand is toxic”
REALLY????
First, there is Smallville a hit TV series which has had in the last seven to eight years or so legions of fans, and it has been on the air for some time, so it must be good for something, right? Yes, it’s the early days of ‘Clark Kent’ before he dons the blues. However, the show is peppered with Superman, and/or DC comics iconography. Also, before the whole development period leading up to the Singer film there was the series Lois & Clark. My point here is that Superman, in one form or another, has always been around, and although times are indeed updated, the main iconography has never, ever been spat upon.
I may not have liked ‘Wanted’ the film as some people have. There is also other people who have a mixed reaction to it as well. Does that mean someone should come along who didn’t like the film to re-invent the entire character(s) and restart/reboot the series? For those of you who loved ‘Wanted’ you probably want to put me in a padded room just for suggesting it. But, here is ‘Superman Returns’, which got a mixed reaction. So here you got a guy (comics writer or not) who didn’t like the film and wants to do the exact same thing and who has never liked the iconography to begin with.
Next, Millar is probably a nice guy. But he sounds off like a total jerk. ‘Man Of Steel’ is in development. It has talent in front of and behind the camera, and to come up with his own project without a finished script (as far as we know) and butt heads with the other project …well, it’s not the same thing as you got your killer volcano movie and I got mine, but it’s more like, I don’t like the way the ‘Transformer’ movies are going (which may have made hand over fist, but also had some problems), “my name is respected in some circles, I’m better than Bay, Speilberg, blah blah blah, I’ll get a producer and a director, and I’ll make my reboot re-imagined re-invented Transformers movie. I’ll make Optimus Prime into a a paper shredder.”
That’s what I get from this statement. He is in effect saying he can do better than Bryan Singer. He is in effect saying he can write better than Harris & Dougherty. Heck, he’s better than just about anyone connected to ‘Superman Returns’. Is it possible I’m reading too much between the lines, or isn’t that basically what he just said. Such arrogance.
Not to mention that in ‘Man Of Steel’ the intent by Singer is to have Superman face an alien opponent and get more action, get a bit gritty…
There is one question I have to ask: Millar writes comics. Did he pitch his idea to DC, and have a DC alternate earth (DC and their alternate earths! Painful!) where “his” Superman can do his thing? Did they turn him down?
****end of whirlwind. Seeler hath spoken****
oh, one last thing:
@Don
Yes, Tim Burton can direct some action, but let’s not get too carried away with that…
I had a big problem w/”THe Kid” as well…..keep Singer and creatively deal with that angle, maybe have SR as an “Imaginary Story” that he had coming back from the remains of Krypton….then kick it into gear with a global thre
I dont think rebooting the superman franchise now would be a good idea becuase its been already 2 years since SR was released and ppl cant wait till year 2011 to see a NEW superman movie which would have no connection or relation to SR. Also, it would be unfair on the superman fans.
I personally think that Bryan should be given another chance as he claims that the sequel will be more focusing on action rather than romance and he should seriously do something about that kid. he screwed up everything by bringing that kid into the movie n now he should somehow get rid of it in the sequel so we can all enjoy the movie without any complaints like we did for the first one (Supeman Returns).
x
…..Damn ‘puter wheezed at my last post. Anyway….a villain as mentioned by others i.e. Darkseid, etc…is whats’ needed. Supes is NOBLE and “The Kid” detracted from his long history of that larger than life aspect of the character. That has to be corrected! There ARE creative writers out there that need to be given a challenge. As much as i liked Soacey’s turn as Luthor–enough already!
The character has been around for (literally) generations and there are a wealth of super villains to choose from. They need to stop going the easy route!
Stick with Singer and just write a good story and the rest will fall into place!
15 more days till The Dark Knight!!!!!! I’m thinking of heading up to Sacramento to see it at the IMAX up there…very psyched for this puppy!!!!
A reboot would be perfect, to make it more human and not so idealistic, to chang the horrible suit and to make it a serious film.
Well, thinking about it, if the kid wasn’t in superman returns, there would be no need to make a reboot, but they fucked things up with that horrible character. I liekd the tone of SR, but the kid was annoying, and Synger can’t do action sequences.
Singerman returns splatered shitt all over Supermans legacy!
WB PLISS LET THIS TEAM OR ANYOTHER TEAM TAKES OF SINGERS JOB AND REBOUT IT NOW!!!
YOU KNOW IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO IF YOU WANT SUPS TO GO IN THE SAME LEVEL OF THE BATS!
Mark Millar is a comic genius. I think he can do wonders with the Supe franchise and I think a reboot would work.
If I’m the only one on this planet that loved Superman Returns then so be it. I thought that Brian Singer had the right idea to bring Superman back. He smartly didn’t make a new origin story but continued the classic story that Richard Donner set. I have faith and patience that Brian Singer will make Man of Steel just as good if not better. Superman is my all time favorite super hero and role model. Unlike Batman and Spiderman cross the line sometimes, Superman still stands for Truth, Justice, and the American way.
Superman Returns The only real problem i had with it was that both superman and lois lane were too young for that particular story, it would have been a great story to show case an older, perhaps gray haired, Kingdom Come -like superman. i think that would have capped off the donner-reeve franchise very nicely. I’m a fan of the singer “returns” movie and i’m sure if ther was a sequel that followed along that arc it would be fun and intereesting to watch. Perhaps the sequel to it would simply be superboy? That being said, i”m sure I’d be equally excited about a reboot. However we all know how the original super kid grew up, and i’d have a hard time sitting thrhough another super hero origin story, esp, a hero so well known a Superman! I mean how many seasons of Smallville have there been?! (Thats a whole other quagmire!) So i’d llove to see an all new Superman adventure that sets itself apart from all others, lets get somthing new and exiting in there!, some new villians ( i love lex, but enough is enough)Braniac, Ultra-Huminite, Bizzarro, the toyman, metallo, Mongul, Doomsday, Eraticator, Mr. Mxyzptlk, Prankster, or even Cyborg Superman. I guess my point is (and i’ve taken too long to get to it i know) Either would be fun, but a whole new Superman would be KICK ASS! So start with Kent alredy woking at the daily planet, maybe he’s shown his super cape maybe he hasn’t but start the story there (not in smallville) and move forward, and lets see some ACTION, lets see Supes really cut loose and do some SUPERdamage! If mark Miller can pull that off ( and i have now reason to doubt that he can) then so be it. one last word to the Warner Brothers Superman is NOT Batman, BATMAN, DARK AND SCARY; SUPERMAN, TRUTH JUSTICE AND THE AMERICAN WAY!! Lets not confuse the two.
