Superman Returns The only real problem i had with it was that both superman and lois lane were too young for that particular story, it would have been a great story to show case an older, perhaps gray haired, Kingdom Come -like superman. i think that would have capped off the donner-reeve franchise very nicely. I'm a fan of the singer "returns" movie and i'm sure if ther was a sequel that followed along that arc it would be fun and intereesting to watch. Perhaps the sequel to it would simply be superboy? That being said, i"m sure I'd be equally excited about a reboot. However we all know how the original super kid grew up, and i'd have a hard time sitting thrhough another super hero origin story, esp, a hero so well known a Superman! I mean how many seasons of Smallville have there been?! (Thats a whole other quagmire!) So i'd llove to see an all new Superman adventure that sets itself apart from all others, lets get somthing new and exiting in there!, some new villians ( i love lex, but enough is enough)Braniac, Ultra-Huminite, Bizzarro, the toyman, metallo, Mongul, Doomsday, Eraticator, Mr. Mxyzptlk, Prankster, or even Cyborg Superman. I guess my point is (and i've taken too long to get to it i know) Either would be fun, but a whole new Superman would be KICK ASS! So start with Kent alredy woking at the daily planet, maybe he's shown his super cape maybe he hasn't but start the story there (not in smallville) and move forward, and lets see some ACTION, lets see Supes really cut loose and do some SUPERdamage! If mark Miller can pull that off ( and i have now reason to doubt that he can) then so be it. one last word to the Warner Brothers Superman is NOT Batman, BATMAN, DARK AND SCARY; SUPERMAN, TRUTH JUSTICE AND THE AMERICAN WAY!! Lets not confuse the two.

If I'm the only one on this planet that loved Superman Returns then so be it. I thought that Brian Singer had the right idea to bring Superman back. He smartly didn't make a new origin story but continued the classic story that Richard Donner set. I have faith and patience that Brian Singer will make Man of Steel just as good if not better. Superman is my all time favorite super hero and role model. Unlike Batman and Spiderman cross the line sometimes, Superman still stands for Truth, Justice, and the American way.

Well, thinking about it, if the kid wasn't in superman returns, there would be no need to make a reboot, but they fucked things up with that horrible character. I liekd the tone of SR, but the kid was annoying, and Synger can't do action sequences.

.....Damn 'puter wheezed at my last post. Anyway....a villain as mentioned by others i.e. Darkseid, etc...is whats' needed. Supes is NOBLE and "The Kid" detracted from his long history of that larger than life aspect of the character. That has to be corrected! There ARE creative writers out there that need to be given a challenge. As much as i liked Soacey's turn as Luthor--enough already!
The character has been around for (literally) generations and there are a wealth of super villains to choose from. They need to stop going the easy route!
Stick with Singer and just write a good story and the rest will fall into place!
15 more days till The Dark Knight!!!!!! I'm thinking of heading up to Sacramento to see it at the IMAX up there...very psyched for this puppy!!!!

I dont think rebooting the superman franchise now would be a good idea becuase its been already 2 years since SR was released and ppl cant wait till year 2011 to see a NEW superman movie which would have no connection or relation to SR. Also, it would be unfair on the superman fans.
I personally think that Bryan should be given another chance as he claims that the sequel will be more focusing on action rather than romance and he should seriously do something about that kid. he screwed up everything by bringing that kid into the movie n now he should somehow get rid of it in the sequel so we can all enjoy the movie without any complaints like we did for the first one (Supeman Returns).

Get ready, here cometh a whirlwind and a r-a-n-t.

"re-boot' I see that word a lot in the comments by the int'l friends. In the story, I see zero indication that Millar wants to 'reboot' Superman. But 'restart it' in a way that he always wanted to: Millar said he wants to <em> re-invent Superman for the 21st century </strong> and that is a <strong>huge difference</strong>. We have heard talk like that before, as Rodney hinted at above when producer Jon Peters had his hands on 'Superman Lives'. Even non-comics fans were angry with Lex Luthor (rouge CIA agent) being from outer space and the giant spiders (recycled for the 'Wild Wild West', my, how well that went over) to Superman not even being...well, not being Superman. In fact, that is EXACTLY why it took so long to see another Superman movie. Nobody could make the changes work. Not with a straight face, anyway.

<em>"I've got a director lined up"</em> Millar boasts. <em>"The Superman brand is toxic"</em>

REALLY????
First, <strong> there is Smallville</strong> a hit TV series which has had in the last seven to eight years or so legions of fans, and it has been on the air for some time, so it must be good for something, right? Yes, it's the early days of 'Clark Kent' before he dons the blues. However, the show is peppered with Superman, and/or DC comics iconography. Also, before the whole development period leading up to the Singer film there was the series <em> Lois & Clark</em>. My point here is that Superman, in one form or another, has always been around, and although times are indeed updated, the main iconography has never, ever been spat upon.

I may not have liked 'Wanted' the film as some people have. There is also other people who have a mixed reaction to it as well. Does that mean someone should come along who didn't like the film to re-invent the entire character(s) and restart/reboot the series? For those of you who loved 'Wanted' you probably want to put me in a padded room just for suggesting it. But, here is 'Superman Returns', which got a mixed reaction. So here you got a guy (comics writer or not) who didn't like the film and wants to do the exact same thing <em> and who has never liked the iconography to begin with</em>.

Next, Millar is probably a nice guy. But he sounds off like a total jerk. 'Man Of Steel' is in development. It has talent in front of and behind the camera, and to come up with his own project without a finished script (as far as we know) and butt heads with the other project ...well, it's not the same thing as you got your killer volcano movie and I got mine, but it's more like, I don't like the way the 'Transformer' movies are going (which may have made hand over fist, but also had some problems), "my name is respected in some circles, I'm better than Bay, Speilberg, blah blah blah, I'll get a producer and a director, and I'll make my reboot re-imagined re-invented Transformers movie. I'll make Optimus Prime into a a paper shredder."

That's what I get from this statement. He is in effect saying he can do better than Bryan Singer. He is in effect saying he can write better than Harris & Dougherty. Heck, he's better than just about anyone connected to 'Superman Returns'. Is it possible I'm reading too much between the lines, or isn't that basically what he just said. Such arrogance.

Not to mention that in 'Man Of Steel' the intent by Singer is to have Superman face an alien opponent and get more action, get a bit gritty...

There is one question I have to ask: Millar writes comics. Did he pitch his idea to DC, and have a DC alternate earth (DC and their alternate earths! Painful!) where "his" Superman can do his thing? Did they turn him down?

****end of whirlwind. Seeler hath spoken****

oh, one last thing:

@Don
Yes, Tim Burton can direct some action, but let's not get too carried away with that...
