Marvin The Martian Film In The Works

Marv+Bugs
It looks like Marvin The Martian is next up to bat for a CGI feature. We get the following news from our friends at comingsoon:

Variety says Warner Bros. is developing a Marvin the Martian feature at Alcon Entertainment, with principals Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove producing along with Steve Crystal. The project will blend live action and CGI. Marvin was created by Chuck Jones and made his first appearance in a Looney Tunes cartoon in 1948. The character was often intent on blowing up the Earth, only to be foiled by Bugs Bunny.

Crystal, a former Warner executive with a first-look deal at Alcon through his Charlie Co. banner, developed the pitch as a Christmas story, with Marvin coming to Earth to destroy Christmas but being prevented from doing so when he’s trapped in a gift box. Alcon’s out to writers and directors

I really don’t like the sound of this one. From the character himself, to the otherworldly landscapes in which he inhabits; the 2-D universe is where they shoud stay. Marvin The Martian is a classic and I am wary that this new fangled adaptation is just going to shit the bed and come off as incredibly awkward. The only positive story that I can see is that he comes to earth with intent to take over.

I suppose they could do something in the vein of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but having Marvin as the only animated character may be off putting. I didn’t like Space Jam and I am going to bet that this will not tickle my fancy either. We will be sure to hunt for more news about this one, and with luck we will have some hints at the direction they will be taking.

  1. WB gave us Space Jam (1996, first looney tunes live action/cartoon film) then Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003, second looney tunes live action/cartoon film) and now hopefully Marvin the Martian will not be that bad at all but CGI oh no!

  2. Is it so hard to write a alien invasion parody without including messages about the spirit of Christmas?

If they’re going to do a live-action Marvin, they should take a cue from “Invader Zim” on how to make alien invasions entertaining.

  3. I love Marvin the Martian…but the idea for a Christmas movie sounds lame as all hell. -sigh- They can’t do anything right with the Looney Tune characters these days.

  4. Space Jam was a fun ride. How can you not like Elmer Fudd dunking the ball ala MJ with the tongue sticking out in slow mo!??

Marvin the Martian without Bugs Bunny is like Corn Flakes without the Milk.

  5. I concur, this sounds smellier than balls.

I LOVED SPACE JAM! wait…I haven’t seen it for about 8 years now. I was 12. I will have to rent it sometime and see how well it sits with me at the ripe ol’ age of 20.

  6. Why must my childhood constantly come under attack? I really hope this gets shut down, but I’m sure it won’t. Marvin the Martian was always one of my favorite cartoon characters. I don’t his translation out of the 2-D world to go well. If he has to have a movie, make it all CGI, didn’t we learn form Scooby Doo not to mix live action and CGI?
