Monster Squad Remake

By Doug - July 16, 2008 - 16:03 America/Montreal

MsWe have word today that the 80’s Horror Film Monster Squad will be getting a remake. Cheers to Bloody-Disgusting for the following news:

This afternoon SpookyDan conducted an exclusive one-on-one interview with Rob Cohen, director of Universal’s upcoming The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, who revealed some interesting news about Fred Dekker’s classic ‘87 movie. Cohen tells Bloodyy-Disgusting that Paramount Pictures has acquired the remake rights to Monster Squad, which followed a group of kids hunting down Dracula and his minions who are attempting to take over the world. Cohen also reveals that he is planning to produce the remake, but does not intend on directing.

Cohen is one of the original executive producers of The Monster Squad, directed by Fred Dekkar in 1987.

I have no knowledge of this film and am seeking some of horror fans to help me on this one. What are your thoughts on Monster Squad, and would you welcome a remake?

I do think it’s cool that Cohen is producing the film for the second time. He enjoyed the experience so much that he desires to do it again! It will be neat to see how this plays out with the same producer on board. I will have to get my hands on the original film before the remake premiers to satiate this curiosity.

Doug my boy I have seen the film and its literally The Goonies with monsters. It was in a sense made for kids cause they made dracula look like a scary guy in a holloween costume. The best parts of the film was made by the Wolfman’s presesnts which one kid kicks the wolf man in his kibbles and bits then reply’s with “Wolfman’s got nards!?” The next is when the kids use dynamite to blow him up and you see pieces of him coming back together by them selves. Beyond that nothing special classic 80s film making. I would be intrested to see a remake.

  2. The Other James Taylor says:

A remake of Monster Squad? Hell no! This movie was a classic from my childhood back when First Choice and Superchannel still existed way before the The Movie Network. I’d be interested in a sequel of “where are they now?” sorts but not a remake. No no no no no, leave this one alone please!

  3. thekingsmen says:

If they are going to remake it, at least let it be alittle longer and alittle more darkier than the original.

  4. I love The Monster Squad. I remember seeing it in a theater and being totally surprised how much fun it was. It wasn’t the type of movie that came out with alot of hype as it was more of a well conceived lowerer tear B film that was a cross between The Goonies and a monster movie. But in this case the monsters were Dracula, Frankensteins monster and the the werewolf. It could make for a really good remake.

  5. Gutpunch says:

Fuck this remake. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck it.
    Fuck it I say.

And Doug. Get yourself a copy pronto. It’s fantastic.

  6. BrDanzig says:

I can also vouch that this movie was highly entertaining. I got the DVD as soon as i came out. This was very beloved from my childhood. I am very surprised that they are making this one. As much as it is a cult classic, it was a bomb at the theater and even though it has lived on I don’t expect that to translate into money. They just released the DVD just a year ago. I like the idea but I am not sure if it can work. It was also very non-PC. Having a kid kill with a shotgun? Not these days

  7. Rodney says:

Yes, The wolfman does indeed have nards.

They have to keep that terminology so that my kids can re discover that word. Not enough of these little ruggers say “Nards” anymore.

  8. Slushie Man says:

This movie fits in perfectly with John’s 3 remake rules. I loved the original, have it on VHS and the new S.E. DVD, and would welcome a remake. As much as I love the original cast, the movie is extreamly dated and had horrible effects (Seriously, you could very plainly see strings on the bats in Dracula’s castle).

Although the scene with Wolfman being blown apart and re-form back together was fuckin’ sweet, and where the oldest kid is shooting off arrows at Dracula’s Brides as they make their way up the street toward them, was sweet.

Mummy and Creature from the Black Lagoon were pointless and neither did anything at all in the movie but stand in the background. I hope they’re given more to do in the remake, or remove them all together.

  9. Tvo says:

This movie sums up the 80’s Tween movies. Its a kids movies that doesn’t treat you like a little kid. Good violence and language that would have parents up in arms nowadays. Best line from the movie after the fat kid kicks the wolfman in the nuts… “Wolfman has nads!”
    Monster Squad FTW!
WOW, Doug has seriously lost some movie geek cred by not having seen this and he’s a grown ass man.

  10. RomeBurns says:

    Campea,
We have pretty much the same taste in movies.
You will love Monster Squad! It’s hilarious!
I watched it as a kid and just loved it like Weird Science.
I’m not comparing the two movies but they’re both very good.
It’s not a horror movie though.

  11. RomeBurns says:

    And I double TVO’s comment!
I can’t believe you dudes haven’t seen it!

  12. chris (the real one) says:

    NOOOOO!!!!! GODDAMN U HOLLYWOOD….DAMN U TO HELL

by the way i dont think this is a good idea

  13. nbakid2000 says:

Doug, I am shocked you haven’t seen Monster Squad. Such a fun movie!

I saw it a few years ago on VHS from a local video store…and loved it.

I am against the remake. They could never make it as cool nowadays.

  14. movieblogsnumbah1fan says:

I would love to see this movie remade because I think most people haven’t seen it and wouldn’t want to see the classic movie monsters on the screen again.

  15. Seth Rex says:

I would love to write this! I doubt i could do any worse than some pro writers these days.

  16. While I’m not fully onboard with this, I will be interested. As stated thus far, some of the FX are dated and could have been done better. But in that day and age, it was a script that Dekker and Cohen wanted to make, and they did the best job they could at the time.

I personally would want a new Creature From The Black Lagoon update apart from this, because the character isn’t as “generic” (in a good sense) as a werewolf, vampire or mummy.

It should be pointed out that some of the original talent is behind this; perhaps it is a property Cohen has some rights to, someone somewhere got a profit check from the recent DVD issue, and said ‘let’s dust it off’.

    Bingo.

  17. DirkAnger23 says:

Mother of God dude you’ve never seen the Mother F-ing Monster Squad??? Your film geek credentials should be revoked. Oh, by the way, hell friggin no to a remake cause there really ain’t a damn thing wrong with the original that needs to be updated.

  18. Slushie Man says:

    According to John’s rules:

    1. Has it been 20 or more years since the original? Yes.
    2. Is it a movie most people in the general public has yet to see? Yes.
    3. Could it benefit from having a remake? Yes. The old effects were horrid, the acting just as bad, the script was a mess and left many things unresolved or open.

Look, I’m the hugest Monster Squad fan you’ll ever find, but I’m also not delusional. The original movie had some major problems, that could easily be fixed by a remake.

  19. Gil says:

i think i read somewhere, im not sure where, that they had to redesign the monsters because universal owned the rights of frankenstein, dracula, etc, now if universal has the rights of the movie maybe theyre planning to do something special. just by keeping the main idea would be enough.

  20. Balcony Fool says:

In principle, I’m against the notion of remaking movies that were made in my lifetime. It makes me feel old.

Yes, that means the longer I live, the longer the moratorium becomes, but that’s just the way it has to be. Sorry, Hollywood.

Oh, and I’ve never seen “The Monster Squad,” but I know a lot of people who swear by it. Maybe we should check it out, John.

  21. Goodly says:

Monster Squad is pretty much my favorite 80’s-movie. My friends and I still quote it regularly, and it’s soo good. Not really a horror-movie, but very exciting for a kid, and still funny for an adult. I would definetly watch the remake, if it seems true to the quality of the original. AWESOME!

  22. Gutpunch says:

There is no way a remake would be able to get away with what they did back then. Kids swearing like sailors, using guns, shooting shit and holocaust references. Doubt it.

If this gets made I will never see it. Ever.
Fuck this and fuck all that think it’s OK to remake.

  23. Rick says:

In complete agreement with gutpunch… This movie was fucking awesome… But a remake wouldn’t be PC enough for the assholes out there that think kids shooting shit and swearing doesn’t happen. I probably will see it though if it is remade, but the original is a classic and doesn’t need it

  24. Tvo says:

In regards to Slushie Man’s complaints on the inperfectness (is that a word?) of Monster Squard. Yes, it has major flaws but thats what makes it so 80’s good. Its like saying Big Trouble in Little China has flaws, yes, but it still kicks ass! and thats what Jack Burton says!

  25. Sidebeards says:

yup… the remake will probably be terrible… so why not a sequel?
