Robert Downey Jr Set To Play Sherlock Holmes
Robert Downey Jr is harpooning some pretty sweet roles, and it looks like Sherlock Holmes has just been added to the list. We get the following scoop from the murky caves of Yahoo:
Robert Downey Jr., riding high at the box office with “Iron Man,” is in final negotiations to play Sherlock Holmes in director Guy Ritchie’s movie about the super sleuth.
Ritchie’s version takes its cue from a forthcoming comic book that producer Lionel Wigram wrote as a selling tool for a new take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic character. The concept sees Holmes as more adventurous and less stuffy than previous screen incarnations and mines more obscure character traits. “Sherlock Holmes” will start shooting in the fall; Warner Bros. is eyeing an October 2009 release.
I like my Sherlock Holmes stuffy. It’ s his particular nature that lends itself so well to his unmatched skills of deduction. Removing this idiosyncrasy makes the character far less interesting to me. Downey has the skills to pull off a classic Holmes and I think it’s a shame that they feel the need to make the character more relatable or hip.
This film goes head to head with the Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen Sherlock Holmes picture. It will be interesting to see both takes on the Sherlock Holmes character, he has stood the test of time for a reason, and I could watch a film featuring him (in one form or another) annually.

i like my sherlock holmes dry and british.
I doubt that we have many dry British actors left that have as much mainstream appeal as Downey. I’m interested as hell to see his take on this. It’s either going to be awesome or as bad as Keanu Reeves in Dracula. I can see it now:
“We’ll catch Moriarty later Watson. First……i want an American cheeseburger”
Recently, Jeremy Brett has owned the character.
Robert Downey Jr seems to have the midas touch at the moment – I for one would be very keen to see his portayal of Holmes for sure.
I know most of us know the reserved Holmes, but in the writing, he is often very different and energetic when pursuing a case.
Also, He does recommend a 7% solution of cocaine at the start of the stories, but later gives it up, maybe its this aspect they are looking at.
This could be! Thank you for filling is in on these details my friend, I appreciate it.
Guy Richie will make a mess of it. End of story.
It’s equally a shame to drag out yet another comedy Sherlock Holmes movie. They must be really getting to the end of the bottom of the creative barrel.
I’d like to see what Christopher Nolan would do with Holmes. That would be a film worth seeing.
Here’s hoping that they don’t make it a comedy, but there’s nothing wrong with a little humor. As far as I’m concerned this movie could go either way. But I am looking forward to it.
i always thought Hugh Laurie would make a terrific Holmes..
oh… and Dexter Fletcher (Soap, from Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels)… a greater Watson..
this will be good, Downey is such a great actor, no doubt he’ll be as good as he was in iron man
I expect Downey Jr. to be great in Iron Man 2 and 3, but Sherlock Holmes and the Hefner bio-pic are two movies I will avoid.
Both stories bore me and I’d rather see Downey Jr. just play Stark for the next 2 films.
Perhaps RDJ needs to be surrounded by complex multiple personal dramas to draw out the very best in himself creatively ie:
1. His wife is one of the producers.
2. Guy Ritchie has had very uneven directiorial success and his marital situation has to be more than a little distracting at present.
3. This movie is up against some tough competition with another comic version of Sherlock at the same time with great actors.
As usual with Downey its hard to separate out which is more fascinating, his acting or surrounding personal adventures. Thanks for all the entertainment RDJ! You will be an amazing Sherlock! Live forever! I’m definitely seeing this one.
My personal choices for you:
#1 Ironman 2
#2 Cowboys and Aliens – Dude, this is so you!
#3 Travis McGee- I’ve read all of John D. MacDonald’s books
RDJ would be a great Travis McGee!
