Terminator Salvation Trailer

By John - July 16, 2008 - 15:05 America/Montreal

The first Terminator Salvation trailer has hit the web. Don’t hold your breath to see much robotic blood lusting… the movie is still a year away and lots of CGI work hasn’t even started yet. But personally I really like the trailer. Check it out

So what do you think of the Terminator Salvation Trailer? Like the feel of it? Think Bale will make a good John Conor? Why or why not?

  1. kevin c says:

From what little is shown, it looks and feels like an epic that could redeem Terminator 3. I didnt “hate” T3 but it felt like it cheapened the extraordinary depth that was created in T2. This gives me the feeling that they are going to be more in line with that…plus Christian Bale does not make bad films, period.

  2. John says:

    Hey Kevin,

Not to knit pick, but Christian Bale doesn’t make films at all. He’s an actor. McG is making this film.

  3. Kristina says:

I grinned like crazy when the Terminator theme started, but I have to admit, I have mixed feelings. I love Bale, but I hate McG. I’ll miss having Arnie around, too.

And Bale has been in bad films. Reign of Fire was hella lame:)

  4. Slushie Man says:

McG did some of my favorite episodes of Supernatural.

  5. melbye says:

OK trailer, it looks like the movie might be good. I like the tone, so far from Charlie’s Angels, but it’s hard to say if Bale will make a good Connor. We didn’t really see him, only hear

  6. PADTHAI says:

    looking forward to this one!

  7. JB says:

I can’t wait for this movie. Bale will probably be a good John Conner. If he can nail Batman, he can nail Connor.

  8. PADTHAI says:

I want to see A LOT of robotic action in this movie. At least more than in the other 3 movies.

  9. HAZMAT says:

does anyone know who will be the terminator? or is it just random machines?

wasnt van diesel going to do it? im confused this trailer didnt show anything

  10. aaron says:

i’m pumped for this, but that wasn’t a great teaser at all. i mean the point is to show very little and leave people wanting more. it was so little that we really couldn’t see anything!

oh and rumor/spoilers say that sam worthington plays the main terminator part.

  11. Greg Aberdeen says:

Christian Bale is a good actor, but his John Connor acts a lot like his Bruce Wayne.

  12. NM says:

When news came out of a 4th Terminator I thought ‘How?’. T1 was excellent and T2 has fantastic soundtrack and effects (especially the T100 model, just awesome). I guess for T3 they thought ‘Hey let’s bring a female Terminator in play.’ Stupid, and the story…..not sure, I didn’t mind it but it failed to produce what the last 2 films did. Maybe T4 will have an ethnic guy playing the Terminator?

Anyway when Bale was brought in I was surprised but glad because it needs someone of his quality to re-ignite this franchise. Looking at the trailer, I’m really looking forward to it. Yes there’s not much in the trailer but I love the whole 1 second flicker of a scene or the whole ‘WTF’ situation (think Eagle Eye teaser trailer).

I hope they keep it like that for future trailers (hey let’s just stop addition trailers altogether, a poster does enough. We know what to expect from a Terminator film….forget new audiences).

  13. Gutpunch says:

This was a kick ass trailer. I urge everyone to download the HD version, use your headphones or if you have a kick ass sound system blast that fucker to high heavens and let it roll. The moment the theme kicks in I get a tingle and a huge grin on my face.
And McG rocks my cock. Fuck all the haters.

  14. Wade says:

    Looks very promising.

  15. handle says:

Looks great. How can you say Bale acts like Bruce Wayne in this movie? We saw a total of 3 seconds of him in motion it seemed. Pfft.

Regardless this trailer got me amped with the quick snippets of action and just seeing Bale.

  16. Grave says:

I like the idea of Bale as John Connor. The character hasnt been portrayed as a leader or military grunt since the first film. Im gonna treat this as a reboot then a sequel

  17. Dragonslayer says:

This movie looks awesome. I’ve only seen Terminator and T3. Both were fun movies. Are they still going with the PG-13 rating? It’ll suck if they do, but it may make more money. We’ll have to see.

  18. Grant Berghoff says:

The trailer was pretty good and I especially liked the new version of the theme overall I just hope it doesn’t suck

  19. joonavar says:

Christian Bale has immense talent. That is not to say that everything he touches is guaranteed to be gold, but he has shown a good track record so far. He is able to pull off characters which exhibit a gritty depth with convincing conviction. The John Conner of the future is supposed to represent a great leader both in moral decisions and fighting spirit…this is something that I would believe that Bale would be able to master, from taking a look at his past track record of roles. However, even the greatest of actors have their moments on film which they would prefer to forget, so ‘judgement’ shall be reserved until the moment I see the entire movie – but this trailer certainly lures you in. Perhaps McG can help us forget the abomination that was T3. Looks persuasive so far – but it’s early days.

  20. Wade says:

Christian Bale is one of my top favourite and one of todays best working actors in my opinion. I’m sure he can carry this movie with greatness. I liked what I saw in this teaser so far.

  21. kc says:

    My thought… FUCK YES.

“This isn’t the future my mother taught me about”

I’m looking forward to this one… I’ll be there. Bale as Connor… works for me.

  22. aaron says:

wow we have to wait one whole year, oh well. it’ll be well worth it

  23. Rogerr says:

Don’t count McG out yet, yeah some of his movies were wicked gay. BUT this movie seems like its gonna kick ass. I mean comon batman and Patrick Bateman are John Connor. The Termiantor series used Arnold too much in the series thats why people are like WTF??

  24. handle says:

That line is good. “This isn’t the future my mother taught me about.”

Perhaps they DID alter the future by going into the past. That would be a nice twist since Terminator 3 basically said at the end; T1, T2, and now T3 have all been pointless because the world is still f*cked.

  25. Kevin says:

come on man, that is exactly what a teaser should look like!

you are full of shit if you are not dying to see more. this is what part 3 should have been like!!!

  26. Bruce79 says:

The trailer looked good. It looks like the atmosphere they are going for is right on. And I love Bale. I have been a fan of his since I saw him in American Psycho. He’s one of those actors who I can usually trust to join quality projects. So I’m excited about this (unlike the tv series and the last intallment).

  27. Lukasman says:

Hey, Handle, actually, T1 was not pointless, because the point there was to protect Sarah, and therefore, John, so that he could be born, and therefore, become the great leader we will now see him become. SO, the war was a given, they just needed to make sure John was born to save our asses….It is only later on in T2, that they throw in the idea of trying to avoid Judgement Day.

  28. @Handle:
“Perhaps they DID alter the future by going into the past”

Indeed. That is the premise behind the recent Terminator TV series. But here’s something that’ll blow your mind: if Skynet didn’t send the first Terminator back into 1984, John Connor would have never been born, as there would be no reason to send back Reese.

Indeed, “wait a whole year” one of the int’l friends says. “Sarah Connor Chronicles” returns in the fall; “T4 Salvation” has lots of time for shameless plugs.

    @Lukasman
I don’t think thats what Handle meant in ‘pointless’. The entire franchise originates from an alternate timeline, if not a paradox.

    *****
As for the trailer itself, it’s good for what it is.
As for McG behind the camera, it’s a little late to bitch about it now. Let’s see what he does. Will he be good as Cameron? No. Good as Mostow? Even that I doubt (I actually enjoyed all of Jonathan Mostow’s films aside from T3’s big budget eater) but I’m interested to see what McG does. One thing I hope he does?

Credit himself as Joseph McGinty and “not” McG
    Now’s the time.

  29. handle says:

ya I guess you are right about T1. I haven’t seen the movies in a while.

What I was saying was that T3 seemed like it said at the end that the future is inevitable and unchangeable and the war was coming no matter what they did. Which seemed to make everything almost pointless in the long run.

Of course except for good entertainment. I did enjoy all the movies tho. T2 is by far the best tho IMO. But the trailer has really gotten my excited. Well, more-so hearing Bale is attached to it and now actually seeing him with a buzz cut and being attacked by robots just makes me even more excited.

  30. Sahil says:

The trailer wasnt great but I am still looking foward to the movie.

  31. Campea Fan says:

Christian Bale picks good movies to be apart of. It’ll be good to see him give some motivational speech to rally the troops. I’m sure I’ll want to rage against the machine afterwords.

  32. steve says:

Pretty funny how Christian Bale is in yet another trailer with the word “Begins” in it.

  33. RyanMag says:

Holy Crap! I’m a sucker for teasers I guess. That was awesome to me.

  34. Shane says:

I really didn’t like T3, I felt it really lacked the true feeling of the first 2 films. I’ve really enjoyed the Terminator TV show, and how it effectively wiped out the existence of T3 in it’s own timeline. I’m interested to see then if this film follows the TV show timeline or if it follows the T3 story. Ultimately they’re gonna have to address this.

I’m cautiously optimistic about this film. The franchise seems back on course with the TV show, but the last film was awful, so I don’t know what to expect. But I do want this to be good, especially since they’re planning a whole new trilogy.

As for the teaser… it’s done it’s job. I’m definitely hyped up for it now and it seems pretty good from what it showed.

  35. Balcony Fool says:

I’m in the minority here, but I found T3 superior to T2 in almost every way. Instead of simply retreading the story of T1, it actually *advanced* the story, and introduced important new characters. I’m actually very disappointed that Nick Stahl and Claire Danes aren’t involved in the new movie. I dug what they did with the characters (anyone who says Stahl wasn’t light-years better than Furlong is high), and even haters admit that the end of T3 was cool as hell. They went to a place that nobody expected, and you gotta give ‘em that.

The one aspect in which T2 wins is direction. Mostow didn’t do a bad job at all, but he simply doesn’t have the epic eye that Cameron has.

Nevertheless, T3 kicked T2’s ass in terms of story and character. It’s a shame Linda Hamilton wasn’t involved, but her part of the story really was over, and they worked it into the story very well.

As for part 4, we have to give McG the benefit of the doubt. Yes, his moniker is retarded, and he hasn’t made any good movies yet, but he’s done a good job at making bad movies, if that makes sense. Who knows what he’s got in him?

The trailer was… not a trailer. It was a teaser, and it’s really hard to get a good impression from it. Still, I like the fact that the machine at the end looked like a practical effect and not a CG creation. If it wasn’t practical, kudos to the effects team.

  36. bigsampson says:

hated t3 but was at the epic age of 13 when t2 came out…..man it was awesome awesome awesome…..i wont hate on mcG…maybe this is right where he wanted to be and makes a dam good feel….i watched the teaser in slow mo and watched hard….it looks like some awesomeness in my opinio\n….I GO OUT ON THE LIMB ABD SAY THIS MOVIE WILL BEAT ALL BOX OFFICE RECORDS……NOW IF YOU THINK that i am wrong say so now cause im solid on my decision! TERMINATOR SERIES IS EPIC…THIS WILL BE THE ONE TO BRING IT BACK!

  37. evil:cat says:

I’m with Balcony Fool. I find T1 the best by miles, with that low-budget, gritty 80’s feel. T2 is, strictly speaking, a better film than T3, but I find the whole mawkish ‘friendly family-man Arnie’ routine puke-worthy, especially shit like being taught ‘hasta la vista’ and whatever else Connor thinks is cool. T2 just takes itself too damned seriously.

T3 is not a good Terminator film, but it is a good Arnie film, and it works on the level of entertainment, comedy and big action sequences is a way Arnie hadn’t done for years.

Maybe I just don’t hold franchises dear — “they totally ruined the Alien series with AVP:R!” — “T3 is a disgrace to the world Cameron created!” Hell, if you don’t like ‘em, don’t watch ‘em. No-one says you have to watch every episode of a franchise and take it as canon. If you don’t like T3, ignore it! Never happened! There has been an undisclosed time between T2 and T4, when some shit happened however you want to imagine it.

Now let’s judge T4 on it’s merits upon release. The teaser is very effective. Looks good.

  38. bruce says:

Everyone ready for new age cgi terminators with new ability’s and powers that feel nothing like the original? How about that teaser, absolutely no atmosphere whats so ever. I guess my point is, this movie inst needed.

  39. pineapplehead says:

Im assuming the machine at the end is a Hunter Killer. Possibly the same thing that drops a claw to snatch that guy. For unfinished effects they look pretty damn good.

  40. Gutpunch says:

There was really only one CGI shot in the teaser, the giant claw that snatches up that guy. The rest are all practical effects. Really liked that one frame shot of the Terminator with his face ripped off.

Great atmosphere in this teaser and great buildup. I don’t think I’ve heard the theme used this well.

  41. WatchMovies says:

I want to see more! Btw I agree with Balcony Fool…

  42. Mozzerino says:

I’m not sold on this yet.
The teaser is ok for what it is, but it didn’t actually make me want to see this now.
McG just hasn’t got rid of this dog-shit smell that surrounds him (yet).

But hey, my boy Christian Bale has agreed to star in this and he must have had some good reason for it, I hope it wasn’t only the big paycheck. I’ll give any movie with him in the lead a chance.
He has already proven once that he can make something watchable out of mediocre action source material (EQUILIBRIUM anyone?).

I just hope that there isn’t any truth to this horrible spoiler concerning the end of this film, that is floating around the net. Now that sounds all kinds of bad.

  43. Jake Vermont says:

Holy Shit!!! Wow this movie seems to have a new feeling a new era a new trilogy….. That’s exactly what i want!!!

Yes the old movies were great but sorry I dont want to see that again
It would bore me…….. This looks fuckin awesome and Bale rocks he is totally going to be the John Conner Kyle Reese told us about in T1 and not that boyish Nick Stahl look
I didnt like him in T3…… he was ok but he wasnt John Connner!!!!!! HE WASNT !!!!!!!!

I like the new Style……. and there is NO Arnold needed again i said that before we saw him in 3 movies that’s enough
Terminator is about honor about loyality about fuckin MACHINES taking over and not about Arnold Governator…. he just gave the look to the T800 Model thats all…… He is not needed

    A cameo would be great though… ;-)

  44. Kevin C says:

Fine, Christian Bale does not choose to act in bad films. I was being fecetious anyway, John.

By the way, Bale + Mcaunaghy + Dragons = goood film IMO.

  45. cib3k says:

The theme at the end was a really nice touch. But I don’t have high hopes for the movie. I like Christian Bale, really liked the first Charlie’s Angels and the stuff McG worked on as a producer, but I don’t think he can make a dark movie. He’s just not that kind of guy. It’s like one of your friends that’s a jokester and a funny guy, but he’s not that deep when you get into serious stuff with him.

Also, with a story from the guy who wrote Supernova and a screenplay from the guys who wrote T3 and Catwoman, expect a mediocre screenplay, with cheesy lines that try to sound deep but are pretty dumb.

  46. Phil says:

Wow! Now thats a great teaser to trailer. Doesen’t really give anything away, it shows some of the action, nice voice over by bale and you get the classic terminator theme at the end.

Kevin C, I couldn’t agree with you more. Most terminator fans that loved T1 and T2 usually either hated T3 or thought it was just okay. But I seldem hear people say that absolutely loved it. I didn’t think it was a bad movie but I agree it wasn’t on par with the first 2 films and did start to deviate and take some liberties with the story. I the flipside to T3 (in my opinion) is even after having said that I don’t think they took the story in a direction where: you logicaly can’t envision 3 more films being made. But the one thing I thought most interesting about T3 is the notion and the truth about Judgement day, that they were never intended to stop it; only prolong it. If you take that into consideration then its easy to see that the future was fated to happen and it was only a matter of time. And now that there will be 3 more films, we get to see that transition of how the human race survived and how the whole man vs machines war started. In a sense with these 3 new films, the terminator series will have come full circle. In the first 3 movies they always showed the future in past tense because (it had already happened) and the present was actually the future because they were trying to prevent judgement day. So now we fill get to see that once fabled post-appocalyptic future finally. Not a bad transition.

The one thing to keep in mind when watching these new terminator films is they are going to be a new trilogy and in that sense will be different from the originals. They are following a story arc where the world we saw in the first 3 films is no more. It will be a different setting with different events and I think these new terminator films need to be approached that way. I think the only possible downside to these “new” films is we pretty much know what event has to happen at the end for the series to come full circle.

Personally I am going to approach these new terminator films with an open mind and not try to compare them with the originals at every corner. These are going to be a new vision and without Arnold. I also think that they couldn’t have picked a better actor to play John Connor and just the fact that Bale is signed on to do all 3 really excites me. He is one of those actors that is so dynamic and completely dedicated 100% to every role he ever does. I have yet to see a bad performance by him in a movie. I did get a little bit weary when I heard McG was directing but after seeing the teaser, a little of that uneasiness has left. I am now excited about the potential these films could have. Lets hope they turn out as good as the teaser looks.

  47. Dan says:

To me, this is a franchise that has been waiting to be “reborn” since the 2nd Terminator. I don’t even count the 3rd movie as being in the franchise, it’s like Batman and Robin, I just choose to ignore it.

Next summer should prove to be really exciting!

  48. finaljoe says:

Who the fuck is Sam Worthington and why the fuck is he sharing top billing with Christian Bale?

“Terminator 4 starring Christian Bale and some guy you’ve never heard of.”

And yes Campea, Bale makes films. Film is a collabrative effort and Bale is part of that effort, hence it perfectly valid to say he makes films.

If I am part of a construction team building a house but only work on the floors I can still say I build houses.

  49. John says:

    Hey FinalJoe,

No, Christian Bale does NOT make films. He’s an actor.

Let’s use your construction team analogy:

What the house will be, what it will look like and how well it’s laid out is determined by the designer. If they design an impractical ugly house…. then it’s going to be an impractical ugly house no matter how good YOU are at doing your job.

The only thing you can do it make sure that ugly house is put together as good as it can be. Your job is to bring out the designs full potential… but at the end of the day it’s still going to be an ugly house.

If a bad script is in the hands of a bad director, then all the actor can do is make those bad words sound as good as they can, and make those bad shots look as good as they can… but at the end of the day it’s still a bad story with bad dialog told by a bad director.

So no… Christian Bale doesn’t make films. As an actor his job is to bring out the potential of the movie he acts in.

  50. NM says:

Terminator fans, Is the Terminator TV programme worth watching as I haven’t seen it? Does it bridge anything regarding the films?

  51. joonavar says:

NM – The Sarah Connor Cronicles is actually the worst thing I have ever seen in connection to the Terminator collective…more so than T3 I would say. I could only stomach a couple of the episodes. As to whether it provides any extra valuable information?…I would imagine it is nothing that you can’t read in a 2 mins synopsis somewhere – I would suggest that you do yourself the favour and opt to read up about it somewhere rather than subject your sanity to watching that atrocity.

  52. Dragonslayer says:

Woah, in the theaters it’s better.

  53. AB says:

they have to at least put arnold as a camio in the film even if its only for 1 mint. or put him at the end of the film, that will let us know that the story will continue in the first terminator film.

i like to think thats a possibility in my opinion, because this can rap up the story.

  54. movie nerd says:

this new Terminator should be good, if nothing else because Christian Bale stars in it… I hope Arnold ends up making an appearance too

  55. Samo says:

I have nothing but faith in Christian Bale to make this film at least appear worthwhile. Terminator 3 was drastic in comparison to the first 2, let’s hope they get it right. My faith in McG lies in that this film has a future setting to spice things up abit.
I won’t be missing it in cinemas purely coz of C.Bale
