I think the second film was a good film but it would have faired better with an october release.Should still make a profit with foreign release gross and DVD release.A third film should definately be made for theatrical release with a more science fiction/alien theme which would allow for the special effects that is the main attraction for younger movie goers.

I have to agree with what's been said by some here: the creators of the new X-Files movie had told fans over and over again that this would be a stand alone-like movie, not something that covered the mytharc.

But many complained that it was too much like a stand alone X-Files episode. It's amazing how people just don't pay attention no matter how many times you inform them of something.

If they come out with a direct to dvd movie it will be the first of it's kind that I will watch and buy. Chris Carter created a great series, every bit as good as what Tim Kring, Jay Abrams, Cuse and Lindeloff are doing but he did it before them. I have no doubts that a third movie will be good. But I'm sure the actors wouldn't be involved. They've gotten too respectable these days.

oops!

I liked IWTB. I've watched the series since 1993 and loved a lot of the MOTW episodes. This was a good stand-alone episode. That's what we were all promised. I would like another movie and not 4 more years to wait, either. I feel that the wait really hurt this movie. Imagine if it had been released in 2004 or 2005. Then, we could have had a third installment (mytharc, probably) now and another in a couple of years. Maybe Chris Carter should have refrained from suing Fox and delaying this whole process. A six year wait since the series end didn't help this film out, nor did the summer release. A winter release would have enhanced the atmosphere of the movie.

As for a third installment, sure, I'd like one, but do we really have to wait FOUR more years!?

Its one thing to say you THINK it will suck, but you cant say it DOES suck when you haven't seen it.

No matter what Ebert says I am not interested. But that doesn't mean it sucks.

The belief that a movie will suck even before you sit in the darkness of the theater and give it a chance. Sad. Roger Ebert described the film (which he liked very much by the way...) as a "good old fashioned thriller, the type we haven't seen in years." I'll side with Roger on this one. When (and if...) they get around to it, I'll check it out. I also agree with Henry as well as his thoughts mirror a lot of us. He's not all hopped up on Mountain Dew!

I like the TV-show X-files very much but not the movies. I haven't seen the new movie yet but I think that it will suck. :( A third movie will probably suck too. :(

@Padthai - uh, what about Californication? Let's see, high ratings, critically aclaimed, Golden Globe for best actor. Yep, I'd say that's pretty much a hit.

I'm sorry but to me so many people just want the same old crap regurgitated over and over again with endless amounts of CGI and mind numbing special effects. It's no longer about the narrative, it's about aural and visual stimulus. How hideously boring.

So many of these "blockbuster" movies are just the same as the last one. They're all clones. There's your Clone Wars for you John. Who can outdo who at the box office.

Whatever happened to good storytelling?

What's the point of discussing a rumour that was debunked by Spotnitz himself?:

http://www.biglight.com/blog/2008/08/straight-to-dvd-rumor-debunked.html

Ms Anderson has two movies released in the next two months, the Gellhorn biopic which she will produce and star in, two other film projects, and the main role in Ibsen's "A Doll's House" play next spring. And she's 7 months pregnant.
