Darren:

I say it has to be epic.

In the best Marvel Thor stories, the canvas is always epic. You can still tell personal stories against an epic backdrop, and Marvel has nailed this with Thor (particularly Walt Simonson's run). Melding that backdrop against the modern world in a film will be far trickier, but I sincerely believe that this is the ONLY way a Thor film works.

Thor is a god, and his character must be treated with the proper gravitas. In the latest issue of Secret Invasion from Marvel, when Thor shows up, his arrival is heralded by a massive bolt of lightning out of a clear blue sky. One of the heroes says, "It's him." EVERYONE knows who he means....cool moment, and just the kind of presence Thor must have in the movie.

@Vargas:

Yor was from 1983.
And that was a poor quality film. Worse than Krull.

I like Thor in legend and Norse myth but I'm just not seeing a good movie coming out of this. I mean a dude with a cape and a winged hat? Come on! This could be really bad!

Anyone remember Yor? That movie about a Norse warrior that got planted into modern times? From the 1970's? This could turn out to be the Yor of the 21st century. Terrible!

" My only concern is that he hasn’t filmed an epic film to date and I would prefer to put the franchise in the hands of someone who has."

Couple of Q's Doug:

1. Who said "Thor" has to be epic?

2. Why is this a concern even if it is? I mean, come on, Doug. Who did you want on this? Ridley Scott? "Last Samurai" Ed Zwick? (*Actually, if Ridley Scott returned to fantasy/sci-fi with Thor, that WOULD be a contract that would have be etched in stone, come to think of it)...We were down with Matt Vaughn, because us smart people caught last year's hidden gem Stardust, but that still flopped.

3. Where does this leave Y The Last Man? Does Y come first, next, or never?

I'm a HUGE fan of the thunder god in all his incarnations whether in literature or comic, but this project scares the shit out of me. The potential of the directors and writers not taking the material serious enough is huge. Marvel may not have the desire to take this project in the epic direction that Thor deserves.

Why do they have to do a movie about Thor in the Marvel universe?

Why don't they just do a epic movie about the god of thunder from the original mythology? In Iceland all kids are required to read stories about the ancient gods, one of them is a book called Hávamál( which means Odins language) and other greats that have more than enough content for two or more epic movies.

Plus, Mel Gibson was there this summer and expressed interest in doing a viking movie. I say let him direct it and let's get a brutal, Braveheart-like movie about vikins, the norse gods and the whole shebang. Forget Marvel.

Zack Snyder (300) should direct this as an origin story. At the end putting him into the present times...
