I have just finished reading a proof copy of 'The Strain' and it is brilliant novel. No longer can vampires be viewed with romanticism as portrayed by many current authors. Here they are blood thirsty, soul destroying leeches - just what you expect from the bad guys. The escalating battle set in New York City brings twists with the ending setting the scene for more.
The writing is stamped with Del Toro's trade marks; father/son relationship, religious artefacts, angels, and most importantly subways. So to say he has merely stamped his name on a book would not be correct in this case.

The only downside is I fear I have a long time to wait for the second installment.

One could argue that writing novels is a step up, because it's a more intellectual medium. It would take more to write a novel than to write a screenplay. I'm curious how involved he's going to be in writing this trilogy though, it's sorta like George Lucas getting writing credit on some Star Wars books when really he did nothing at all.

Guillermo is amazing, he can do it all. write novels and make movies. It's quite rare for people to have skills for storytelling in writing and film form, both require different abilities. People who make movies don't usually go into writing novels.
