Iron Man 2 In IMAX And 3-D

By Doug - September 12, 2008 - 10:17 America/Montreal

IronmansMr. Favreau may want to shoot Iron Man 2 on IMAX, and is also mulling about the THIRD DIMENSION! We get this glorious scoop thanks to commander Rombert Sanchez over at IESB:

While at a press conference with both Stan Lee and Jon Favreau about IRON MAN, the character, the history, the dvd and more, Favs spoke briefly on the progress of IRON MAN 2 and some things he would like to see happen for the highly anticipated sequel.

I will have the entire transcript for you all shortly, but wanted to do a quick update considering the awesomeness (is that a word?) of the news!
After seeing The Dark Knight and the look of that film, Favs would like to shoot IRON MAN 2 in part on IMAX and would also like to use 3D technology as well.

I consider this news to be glorious. I enjoyed the first Iron Man very much and am looking forward to future films. Downey Jr. killed the role of Tony Stark and set the bar for the fantastic summer that was to follow.

I need to see more films in IMAX, the screen is huge, picture is crisp and the sound is incredible. It’s a beefed up viewing experience, and well worth the extra coin. The addition of 3-D is fine with me; I love it. I just hope they plan to have gobs more action, otherwise it won’t really have a proper pay off. With 3-D in mind, I can almost guarantee that the medium will be a driver for action, and that’s good for business.

Now this news isn’t gospel, Favreau is just letting us know his wish list of possibilities. I’m personally on board with his desires and hope we get both IMAX and 3-D treatment -what about you guys?

    3D!! that should be interesting

  2. Chuck Norris says:

The experience of watching The Dark Knight in IMAX was overwhelming…at least during the scenes actually shot in IMAX. I didn’t like the constant switching from IMAX to non-IMAX shots; especially when the IMAX shots were eight second establishing shots.

So my hope is that if they shoot Iron Man 2 in IMAX, that they will shoot the whole ball of wax in IMAX. That would fantastic.

  3. Sanderson says:

When people start talking about using 3D it always scares me, especially about movies that I’m really looking forward to. While 3D is a neat technology, it seems to me that the movies employing 3D technology depend too much on the special effects to carry the movie rather than focusing on the script and storyline. If Iron Man 2 avoided this, I think it would be really cool.

  4. Phil Gee says:

I trust Favreau completely to know that this is simply a tool to enrich the theatre experience and not something which makes the actual movie better. The film must stand up by itself on DVD and in regular theatres.

I’m just glad he’s making Iron Man 2. It looked like it might not happen for a little while.

  5. geoff says:

IMAX for the whole movie! awesome, this is what all big movies should be using.

It’s funny how only now IMAX is truly taking off, after many years of showing ride pictures. I guess in an age where anyone can watch blu-ray at home, and get picture and sound quality that rivals ( if not surpasses) that of most movie theaters, IMAX is a good thing.

  6. Chuck Norris says:

Geoff–that makes a lot of sense.

The “widescreen” revolution of the 50’s was in response to television. Hollywood knew that in order to compete with the small picture, the big picture had to get much, much bigger.

Fast forward to the widescreen LCD/plasma revolution, and what can Hollywood respond with? Even bigger pictures….and 3D to boot!

    Viva la competition!

    Sweet!

  8. HAZMAT_PWNS_ALL says:

that would be the best 3D movie evr made. unless you count the dark knight..but if ironman 2 is better then yes- best 3D movie ever made

i would love to see watchmen in imax…

thing is…if they make it in 3D- would it look lame when you see it normally? like when he extends his arm he does it waaay too slow so you can tell its a 3D scene?

if youve ever seen jaws 2 you know what i mean….

  9. PADTHAI says:

glacing over the article, i had no idea that Robert Downey is going to have so much say over the writing of Iron Man 2. I think that’s sorta weird.

  10. Sir Jig-A-Lot says:

That news is fuckin’ ROUTH if it’s true. Nice combo: Downey,Favs & IMAX.

  11. Klendathu says:

I’m all for IMAX, but I don’t know about the 3-D part, I mean, the novelty of it all wears off pretty quick…..even quicker when it comes out on dvd.

  12. 790 says:

If it aint broke, don’t fix it.
    I knew Fav’s was a dork, 3D,,,!!!
I’ll let my 5 year old nephew know.

    3D,,, what a gimmick.

  13. harnad says:

Iron Man in Imax would be nothing short of awesome! Bring it on.
    3d, not so sure

  14. Rick says:

I am hoping he goes through with the 3D. I have yet to see an IMAX movie just because of theatre convenience but this is one film that I would go out of my way to see at the IMAX. My grandson LOVED the first film so I’d make sure to take him too! Rick http://www.ilovefilms.com
