Lord of the Apes Returns
It appears an alleged re-envisioning of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes is in the works. We get news of this story from our friends at the movieweb:
Stephen Sommers is teaming with Warner Bros. to recreate a bigscreen version of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan, Lord of the Apes. Collateral screenwriter Stu Beattie will write the project with Sommers, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Beattie and Sommers do not plan to work from the original 1914 Burroughs tome or any previous film. An entirely new approach is in the works, though more details beyond that are being kept under wraps tighter than Tarzan’s loincloth.
This news concerns me. How do you plan on recreating Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan if you don’t use the source material. You can’t use the guys name or claim to be recreating his work if you don’ t even use it as a source. This is peculiar day in the world of remakes. When remakes aren’t remakes, but still want to be remakes – you know we have a problem on our hands.
Maybe this is a misquote or I am missing something, but from what I see – bad decisions are afoot.
I remember seeing the film as a child and being very bored in parts and interested in others. if i remember correctly, one of the more interesting moments involved urine. If I am not mistaken, at one point someone gets pissed on from a tree and all the apes laugh along with Tarzan. I remember laughing at this part, and oddly enough it’s the only thing I remember from the film to this day. Top that Sommers!
Looking at more recent movies, Greystoke came out in the 90’s with Christopher Lambert as the Lord of the Apes. Curious to me is that first we get wind of a Highlander reboot, and now a Tarzan reboot. Two Lambert movies down, how many more to go? Is Hollywood trying to erase Christopher Lambert from movie history????

I loved the Disney Tarzan, but this sounds STUPID.
I wish someone would make a faithful version of the book. The last incarnation and the Disney cartoon both went back to the original, but still had their divergences. I remember the Tarzan books from my adolescence. They were terrific stories. It would be great to see a series of movies based on the books.
If the new movie is anything like Greystoke from the 80’s I’m all for it.
