The Dark Knight Will Get Oscar Season Re-Release

By Doug - September 11, 2008 - 11:11 America/Montreal

Heath-Ledger-Joker-02The Dark Knight will be re-released in January, in time for Oscar voting season. Batman brought home the bacon, now they want him to bring home the gold. We get the following news from the bat caves of Yahoo:

“It’s just a matter of bringing it back as a reminder for people,” a studio insider explained.

Warner Bros. domestic distribution president Dan Fellman acknowledged ongoing talks with Imax execs over the prospect of restoring the Christian Bale starrer to some giant-screen venues in January. It’s uncertain if “Dark Knight” also will reappear in conventional venues at that point.

This happens from time to time around oscar season, and I think that a rerelease of The Dark Knight is appropriate. I can see people going to see the film again, even if it only makes a limited release in select cites. The Dark Knight got people amped about going to the movies, and that’s what I like to see in a summer blockbuster. Although I’m uncertain if it will take home any awards – I can certainly see TDK getting a new nominations. I personally would like to see Ledger nominated for his role as the Joker – he ruled.

Awesome news! I will go see it again during the re-release for sure!

  2. Ryan says:

    Best cinematography perhaps?

  3. Gordon Shumway says:

That would be nice to actually have the chance to see it in IMAX. I think the UK has five IMAX theatres and they are miles from me. I may have some money by then.

  4. Phil Gee says:

I will send you a train ticket Gordon. Every film fan deserves the opportunity to experience TDK in IMAX.

For the record, you can colour me shocked if the film gets nominated for best picture.

  5. Flyer28 says:

Re-release! What about DVD? I refuse to wait in line four a fifth time.

  6. 790 says:

I think this is all about Ledger, not the movie…
This is how their going to get him nominated…

  7. Mr. Chris says:

If this were an extended re-release, they could probably topple Titanic no problem.

  8. Dragonslayer says:

Best Supporting Actor my friend! Hopefully Best Picture nominee. Something tells me In Bruges will be one too

  9. Dragonslayer says:

The Dark Knight is the best movie of the year so far. It’s bound to be nominated

    HOWEVER…

It could end up like Saving Private Ryan. Got a Re-release and never one Best Picture (rip-off!)

Wally Pfister for Best Cinematography is a lock. (Wally was nominated for Best Cinematography for Batman Begins and The Prestige…Three times a charm!) Ledger as The Joker for Best Supporting actor is a lock. The Academy is considering giving Nolan the Director nod and Brothers Nolan the best adapted screenplay nod as well as Lee Smith for editing and Nathan Crowley for production design. Right now The Dark Knight is looking at six possible nominations – 2 of which are for certain – and this is excluding sound design and sound mixing. The Dark Knight is gonna clean up.

  11. Zuke says:

I’m kinda bummed, in that I was hoping it would be out on DVD by then…

  12. moviegab says:

Is it only for the states or in canada too (or world wide)??

  13. Nixon says:

I dont know, about The Movie Blog,
but what if Oscar is about to change ?

What if they belive in any movies as long they “act” over rule everything in the movie such as graphic and action…

Hey don’t get me wrong, they’re now more black ppl winning and black host, in Oscar, and I think things are changing…

I expect the Joker to win, with no question, and I am sure John and Doug would agree wether its an Oscar style or not !

    Peace to Heath Ledger !

  14. T-Vo says:

How can anyone “Expect” Heath Ledger to win, when none of the “Oscar” movies have been released yet? The studios release all their oscar hopefuls toward the end of the year. Was Heath Ledgers Joker that good? I think anyone playing the Joker, does it in an over the top fashion. He did a great job but Oscar worthy?

  15. Nixon says:

T-VO, if you really pay attention to his acting, He made exactly the way comic but in a realism version of it,

Sure “No Country for Old Man” actor did a good job, but you think the Joker wasn’t taht great with all twisted and voice acting ?

    Think Again !

I say Heath Ledger did Amazing as of acting, voice, the style,
Oh by the way I’m going to copy and paste from IMDB…

    ——

” * SPOILER: Heath Ledger improvised when he started clapping inside his jail cell in a mocking and sardonic capacity as Gordon is promoted. The clapping was not scripted but Christopher Nolan immediately encouraged the crew to continue filming and the sequence was included in the film.”

There were more that Heath Ledger wasn’t supposed to do, but did it anyways because he knew the magic trick !!!

I think if anything, this man deserves it,
I’m not saying as Joker Fan or because he’s dead,

It’s cause he took his mind to the joker’s mentality, (which was dangerous thing to do)
Like John said, Heath took the Joker role over his shoulder through the whole movie !!!

  16. AXEL says:

I really hope Heath Ledger wins the oscar. I heard Phillip Seymour Hoffman will be playing the penguin in the next Batman movie. I imagine that will bring some oscar buzz too.

  17. Keith says:

I think that the re-release of the movie should have Katie Holmes replacing Maggie Gyllenhaal, if possible. (nothing personal Maggie) In my opinion that is the only flaw in the movie (a big one in my eyes). It looses that realism and its hard to believe. Im not her biggest fan nor do I think shes the greatest actress, but movie sequels need the original cast. Plus the death scene would of been more shocking. If they make a 3rd installment it could of gone down as the best trilogy of all time, next to star wars, but that replacment kills it, what if star wars replaced princess Lea in The Empire Strikes Back? or Rocky fought a different Apollo in Rocky II? It would have been weird huh? Thats why I think it should be done.
