Will Smith As Captain America?

By John - September 8, 2008 - 11:50 America/Montreal

Could Will Smith be the next Captain America? According to actor Derek Luke, Smith has already been offered the role. The folks over at MTV give us this:

“I heard they offered Will Smith ‘Captain America,’” said Luke, adding that the intriguing casting rumor “just shows you how times have changed.” While this word through the Hollywood grapevine is nothing more than a rumor at this point, it should be noted that Marvel hasn’t shied away from changing up the race – and gender – of established characters in recent years. Upon kicking off his celebrated take on “The Ultimates” (Marvel’s re-imagining of their classic superteam The Avengers), Mark Millar changed S.H.I.E.L.D. head honcho Nick Fury from a crew-cut, cigar-chomping, middle-aged white man to, well… Sam Jackson.

Ok, now let me deal with two separate issues this brings up:

1) A Black Guy Playing Captain America
I’m actually ok with this idea. Captain America is a Marvel character and as such he is whatever they say he is. Besides, they have changed race of other classic characters before and on screen it’s even worked a couple of time. The important thing isn’t the color of the characters hair or eyes or skin… it’s capturing the essence of who the character is that’s important.

2) Can Smith Capture The Essence Of Captain America?
This is where I say NO. I like Will Smith as a performer. I think he’s talented, has loads of charisma, charm is most importantly is pretty fun to watch… but the character of Captain America is a total departure from the presence Smith brings. America is a totally different character and I just don’t see Smith embodying the essence of who Steve Rogers is. Maybe a younger Denzel Washington could have… but not Will Smith.

At the end of the day I wouldn’t put too much stock in this rumor, but I wouldn’t dismiss it out of hand either.

So what do you think. Can you see Smith as Captain America?

I am no racist, but let’s be realistic. If the world was different at the time i would never be against this idea, but the army was still segregated back then and they would never choose a black guy to be the ultimate patriot

    • Reggie D. says:

Wake up this is a new age ! I was raised on marvel comics and from my perspective change is always good. that era of the blue eyed, blonde haired super hero is boring . Hell I could pull off the part of Captain America and I am quite sure Will Smith will have no problems.Oh and by the way, I think you better check your wallet cause maybe you left your race card there .

    • The first captain america was black

  2. Dragonslayer says:

Will for Cap’n America would be beast!

  3. kazzo says:

    there’s no way.

  4. aaron G says:

i don’t really know much about capt. america, other than that he’s, um, white. so having said that, i don’t at all have a problem w/ will smith playing him. it doesn’t really get more all-american than will smith anyway, does it?

but, man, i bet doug is having a conniption fit over this.

  5. handle says:

    Sounds like a bad idea.

Make him Green Lantern. I always like the black version of that character more so than the white guy for some reason. Tho I know little about the character anyway.

    Plus he is Hancock anyhow!

  6. Mike says:

One of the best conflicts in the Captain America character is that as a tall, strong, blue-eyed, blond-haired, white guy he is the essence of the Aryan race that Hitler was pushing. And yet, here he is fighting a cause that would sees him as an example of white supremacy. Is this dynamic lost with Smith, yes; but this doesn’t have to be an issue if they choose to not address it it.

  7. Kristina says:

My “meh” reaction is more about him doing his Big Willie shtick through the whole movie, which is wrong for Cap, than it is about race. MCD was Kingpin in Daredevil and nobody save for a few nutjobs really gave a shit.

  8. HAZMAT_PWNS_ALL says:

    no. no. no. no.

im not racist whatsoever- at all…but i dont want a black guy as captain america…i also hate the fact of luke cage or green lantern being white.

    what? this is fucking retarded

    no.

oh and btw…nick fury IS black..so dont give me the sam jackson bullshit- sure nick fury used to be white but so did the green lantern

    wow.

  9. HAZMAT_PWNS_ALL says:

    HANDLE
dude- lol i dont even like him as the green lantern because the green lantern is blacker which is why peopel like tyrese gibons as a green lantern…i know im sounding racist here but…cmon!

the green lantern is way blacker then will smith and will smith is way too black for the green lantern role…

only way this EVER worked out was with the kingpin which i thought was PERFECT. i loved that kingpin but appart from that…nay

  10. My choice would actually be more of an unknown or rising actor such as Sean Faris (Never Back Down) or JP Davis <(Fighting Tommy Riley). Now, that said, may I suggest something here?

I wouldn’t mind Will Smith…as a younger Nick Fury if it were a cameo or unique timeline Rogers and Fury share.

However, I would rule out Falcon due to Smith’s Hancock, and, by the way…isn’t Smith connected to Pharoah now?

    *****
Note: I’d be more worried who they cast as Bucky lol

  11. No, just hell no. Ed Brubaker just made Cap acceptable again — they shouldn’t go ruining the character with an ethnic retcon.

Nick Fury works because the Nick Fury of the Ultimates Universe is modeled after Fury. We don’t need a Captain America movie that badly, and we definitely don’t need one written by Akiva Goldsman, Smith’s hired pen.

  12. Klendathu says:

melbye hit it right on the nose, if this rumor is true, this is the most retarded idea I’ve heard.

  13. ^^CORREECTION: The Nick Fury of the Ultiamtes Universe is based on Jackson,

  14. Ricochet says:

No this is the fucking stupidest idea I’ve heard in awhile.

Will Smith might be a good guy and all but who cares, he’s not an actor IMO, he’s a movie star and only does those roles that pay him a ton and keep him a movie star.

What I mean by movie star is that it’s the image and power thing rather than the art and while there are some that are both great actors as well as being mega movie stars they are far and few between and other than a couple of his films have I seen Will Smith the actor just the the movie star, the man the earns big bucks for the studio’s.

While it may be a smart business to get such a bankable star like Will Smith it’s not what made Iron Man such a good film, what made it great was that there was great actors in Iron Man, not movie stars that might have the potential to be a good to great actor.

Nobody wants to take bad about Will Smith because he’s such good guy and because he’s a powerful but his movies IMO are average at best, sure they make a ton of money and there is no doubt why the studio’s love him but he’s more style than substance.

But back to Captain America, it’s fucking stupid to have a black man playing the role of Captain America. It makes no fucking sense at all, if they are going to keep this is sort of real world setting it’s beyond moronic to go this direction.

I never really read comics but I know enough and I understand that in recently that Captain America died in the comics so if the next man to be Captain America is black or any other race for that matter then I’m all for it being other than someone who’s white.

IMO Aaron Eckhart should be Captain America.

  15. chris (the real one) says:

as a black man and comic book reader i say hell no to this……i pray its only a rumor….

unless he plays isiah, the black man that was the 1st cap (in a comic called truth it talked about the us government testing the super soldier serium on black soldiers, isiah was the only one to survive and be used in combat wearing the iconic costume)

but no on him being steve rogers…..especially now since steve is dead in the books…..give us a white captain america….no reason to make the guy black besides to shake things up….and i dont wanna see that debate on the news…..

  16. chris (the real one) says:

and things like this that involve the changing of a character a lot of people (black and white) hold close to them may bring out the ignorance in them….

  17. FODE says:

I think this all hinges on the script, and Will Smiths portrayal of the charchter…NOT on his race.

will smith has proven he can be serious when the role calls for it.
will smith has proven to be a legitimate action/adventure star.

NOTHING says he cant delve into this role and NOT make it his own, but STICK to the actual charchter…

obviously this is nothing but a rumor, but if they WERE to pull the trigger on this, and did it right, the last thing any of you would be worried about is the color of the lead charchters skin on film as oppose to its comic portrayal.

i know thats what pops into your heads when u first think of this, but please…

—-side note—I AM LEGEND was written and RE-written DOZENS of times for WHITE actors before the lead role landed in Will Smiths lap.

—-The role of Neo in the Matrix was originally offered to Smith, but he declined for he had already signed on to do (the terrible) Wild Wild West….

2 examples of actors of opposite races taking on scripts that werent necessarily penned with their RACE in mind…

i guess since the first 43 presidents were white, we might as well stick to that plan…fuck it, wouldnt wanna confuse us americans…

shit if we can have a Black President in 2008…i think the world will welcome a Black, White or OTHER Camptain AMerican in 2010…..please ppl….open your minds.

  18. Ransom Betty says:

No no no NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Here is the problem. Captain America was created during WWII. I do not see how they could even be considering Will Smith for Captain America? Let alone offering him the fucking role! In this case it is about race! I’m sorry but the only way a black Captain America could work would be if he is a modern day reinvention of the character. Meaning he is NOT Steve Rogers and he was NOT created during WWII. I believe they are going for Steve Rogers though and if that is that case I will not see the film!

  19. Meli says:

I really like Smith, but I don’t see him as Captain America…if they were to cast him all I would see is Will Smith and not the character.

  20. Jonathan says:

I am a fan of the actors looking somewhat like their respective characters. Imagine if the cast someone that didn’t look anything like Wolverine, say Jackie Chan. People would be furious.

In reality though, it is not that big of a deal and it has the same potential whether they cast a black, white, Native American, Asian actor – and regardless of who they cast, I probably won’t be too interested in the project anyway.

  21. Mr. Chris says:

There was a black Captain America at one point (wiki: Isaiah Bradley,) but I still think we shouldn’t be afraid to admit to racial differences, especially if we aren’t racist. The most popular Captain America was white, and that’s how everyone pictures him. Something would definitely seem off if Superman or Batman were black, no matter how good the actor.

In the case of Will, I’ve already seen him in Hancock last night. It’d be weird to see him jump back into a different set of tights so soon. And the Captain doesn’t seem like the right role for him at all anyway.

  22. Rodney says:

I really like Will Smith, and it has NOTHING to do with being black (but the comic book character isnt… just sayin) Michael Duncan Clark got the gig because he EMBODIED what Kingpin was. Personality, physique, presence.

None of these qualities that Smith has would make a good Cap.

Now as mentioned above, if you take the big willie attitude and make him a stern straightman, Smith would be AWESOME as Green Lantern (the most recent version is black anyways)

  23. MR. TIBBS says:

Bad idea. Keep the comicbook characters the way they’re supposed to be. Next thing you’ll tell me is that Goku will be white.

  24. War Journalist says:

I am a die-hard Marvel comics fan, & I say NO. I love Will Smith, he’s practically a god. But I do not believe he could or should be cast as Captain America. Had he been black originally or even in the Ultimates series on which the new movies are based, I’d be fine with it. But he’s not. He IS, as some may say, a “tight-ass whitey.” He is. He’s all business and training. He’s the ultimate boy-scout. I would have the same reaction if they tried to pick a white person to play Luke Cage. It’s stupid. I’m no racist, and I deplore anyone who believes one group is better than another. I just don’t think Will could do it. Granted, had I been an executive on Daredevil & presented with the idea of MCD playing Kingpin, I probably would’ve said no, and I’d have been wrong. He was a perfect Kingpin, and I don’t think there’s a person(of any color) who could’ve done it better.

I would just like to re-idereate what Chris(The real one) has said above: There is already a black Captain America. His story took place a few years before Steve Rogers(the Cap we all know). He was in a group of black soldiers who were forced into a crude version of the super-soldier program, and he was the only one who survived. For more info, see Marvel’s page

    http://www.marvel.com/universe/Bradley%2C_Isaiah

  25. Ransom Betty says:

Isaiah Bradley would be good for Will Smith. I had forgotten about Truth: Red, White & Black. It just would be a strange transition for Will to go from Hancock to Captain America. I heard Hancock is supposed to be a franchise for Mr Smith.

  26. screamwriter says:

It’s not so outlandish. Check out the 2003 Marvel mini-series: Truth: Red, White & Black. The story goes like this: In an attempt to perfect the super solider serum, African-American men were used against their will, as test subjects. Most died, except for Isaiah Bradley. He even steals a spare Captain America suit and goes off to fight the Nazis.

  27. chris (the real one) says:

^by the way a movie based on isiah would be badass….and wheres my luke cage or iron fist movie….come on marvel….u can do it

  28. WHY? The Captain America concept can sell it self it! I like Smith, but not for that role!

  29. John Whiteaker says:

I think Will Smith could work as Cap but I’m worried people would see too much humor in what he does. People are very used to comedy from him even in more dramatic roles in which he can still find humor. He’d have to be very serious like in Pursuit of Happyness. I don’t mind it at all. I have to admit that it may have been difficult for the U.S. at the time to accept him as a great war hero/leader. Unless he does play the first Cap… that could be cool too!

  30. Rafa1215 says:

Well we have our opinions. Whatever we cry about – it doesn’t matter. The fact is that the studio has pursued Smith. Meaning they are willing to risk millions of dollars to cast him as Cap. It might or might not work out for them.

  31. Mr. Chris says:

I just hope he actually does punch out Hitler in this movie. A shot like that in the trailer is guaranteed box office gold.

    @MR. TIBBS
Goku will be white. He’s not from this planet and doesn’t even look Asian, so there’s no need to make him so just to remind us that his show originates from Japan. Anyone who fits within the Asian-Caucasian skin tones can play him.

  32. HAZMAT_PWNS_ALL says:

    Mr. Chris

are you- the patriot isnt capotain america. are you talking about the patriot?

    no.

  33. Orren Jensen says:

I am going to preface like everyone else I am not racist but I do have the balls to say I am a artistic racist. Meaning if a general audience see a particular character as a particular race then that character should be portrayed by an actor that is of that race. Since the general audience remembers the Aryan Captain America aka Steven Rogers. So in my opinion they should go with that Captain America, even though there are many different versions of Captain America. Even with being a “artistic racist” I am not say a black actor can’t pull of greatness in a role that the general audience would like to see white. I just like to see the classic look to a character. What if they were going to make an X-men four and casted Storm as a white blond boom shell who also is an amazing actress. No one would take that well because it isn’t the classic look for Storm.

  34. Jeff says:

No. Absolutely not. No no no no.

First Marvel kills my favorite Superhero , than they want to change his Race?

Lets make DMX Thor while we are at it.

    This is retarded

  35. chris (the real one) says:

no need to label urself orren……it really isnt racist to prefer that a character who is white in one medium to be white in another……

one of the reasons i didnt like i am legend was that will smith played the title character that was white in a book, does that make me racist? nope…..and no offense but “artistic racist” doesnt make sense…

  36. Nixon says:

Okay this is really ridiculous, I mean i jsut post a comment recently how I dont hate Will Smith, but his targetting Audience always been kids crap,
Now if he does Captain America, I dont care if he’s black or white, but it will absolutley be the next Spiderman crap !!!

  37. chris (the real one) says:

oh and john i really disagree with the first point in ur post…..even tho is a messed up thing to say, how the character looks DOES play a major part in who the character is…..

i dont think u would be too happy if they casted a black man to be spidey or hulk…..or if they cast a white dude to play blade….

the look of the character is almost more important that who it is….because thats what u see first…..most people identify cap as the white, blonde, blue eyed super soldier….having people see will smith wearing the outfit would turn a lot of the fans off me included….and during WW2 the US would never put a black man up to that level as a hero that represents the US….it wouldnt make sense to the story or the time……but if he played isiah, hell yes

sorry for the double post and wall of text…..kinda stoned and feel like writing (lol)

  38. pigeon says:

Not sure if anyone mentioned this but maybe he can pull a Robert Downing Jr. in Tropic Thunder and get surgery.

  39. John says:

no way, for all the reasons mentioned.

i used to think matthew mconaughey should be cap, but i’ve changed my mind. matt damon should be captain america. JUST DO IT MATT.

mconaughey would actually make a better thor. he’s got the build and looks right with a big mustache and beard, ala reign of fire. in ‘the ultimates’, thor is even a bit of a nature-loving hippie even.

  40. morten says:

There is only one captain america, and his name is Randy Couture… :p (to bad he can’t act..)

Well, why not Will Smith? If it’s just a black/white thing then I have no problem with Smith portraying cpt. america, but the simplest and least controversial decision would be to cast a whiteboy.

Anyways, if the acting is good enough apperance is trivial.

  41. Obi-wan kubrick says:

I think he could pull it off. I have never seen him pass up a role that he couldn’t do.

  42. bigsampson says:

WTF….first let me say to morten taht randy couture is neat n all but he will lose lopsidedly to brock lesnar period…..and will smith as capt america is just a plain bad idea……teaching someone how to act like cap is easy but u need the right person…..screw what people say find matt mcouneghy or however u speel his name and get him a acting coach……..he was made to play capt america or the chopper pilot wild bill in gi joe GO GO GO MATT MCCONUAGHUOOOUEY

  43. Hero Stew says:

Aaron Eckhart is my choice for Cap’. I wonder if Smith was offered the Black Falcon. A hero who fought along side Cap’ in the 70’s.

A Captain America Black Falcon movie would be awesome.

And yes I am a Cap’ fan and own nearly ALL Cap’ comics. Originals. Not reprints.

  44. mikey says:

Does anyone realize that its ok to talk about this topic without saying I’m not racist as long as what you say isnt completely ignorant trash? Its really ok. I still say Brad Pitt should take the role.

  45. P-man says:

What I see as the biggest problem here is that we’re even talking about it. The beauty about comic book movies up to now is that they have been about the characters and the actors. Even Ledgers portrayal of the Joker was more about how he totally nailed the character less about the actor himself (until his untimely). The same goes with Downey Jr. in Iron Man. It was more about how spot on he was Tony Stark. I fear that if they start bringing in superstars like Smith. The movies will become more about the stars and less about the character. Didn’t we already get some of that with Norton doing rewrites of the Incredible Hulk. Big stars often come with big demands. Sorry, but I like my comic book movies just the way they are, focused on the characters and not the actors portraying them.

P.S. I’m a black man, so it’s not about Smith’s color. It’s about me not wanting the the stars to become more important than the movies.

  46. P-man says:

    “mikey

Does anyone realize that its ok to talk about this topic without saying I’m not racist as long as what you say isnt completely ignorant trash? Its really ok. I still say Brad Pitt should take the role.”

Welcome to the PC world we live in Mikey. As a person of color I’ve always found it funny when someone feels the need to tell me that they’re not a racist. Speaking for the black people out here. Mikey is right, if you’re not a racist, we’ll know. If you are, saying that you’re not wont make a difference. You’ll still sound like a idiot.

  47. HAZMAT_PWNS_ALL says:

    jack.

i was confused with the patriot. and yes. were all idiots…but only one thing sets us appart. YOU seem to think its a good idea to have will smith as captain emrica and your retardeeze makes me thank god that im not on your shoes.

will smith as steve rogers. okay thats really good.

go watch roots or shindlers list so you can feel better about yourself.

  48. chris (the real one) says:

i cant even begin to fathom how insane the ainitcool talk back section is….lol

  49. Geno says:

I seriously think this is just a rumor to cause people go in an uproar like they are right now. But my thoughts on this are “meh, I need to see it to believe it”.

  50. Erika says:

    NO! BAD IDEA!

  51. Anti-Ceptic says:

People, it is ok not to want a Black Captain America. Do not apologize for that, being a fan of the comic book series I tend to want to stay as true to the character as possible. Its what I dreamed of as a kid and still do as an adult.

I must say that I am a fan of Will Smith and I genuinely like him. That all being said, I just dont envision him as Captain America. No other way of saying it.

I also do not like the idea of Brad Pitt as Cap, why does his name always surface for every Superhero role in rumors? Has anyone actually watched his movies? He is not a leading man, he doesn’t carry a film. He is a supporting actor, period.

  52. jaffahut says:

To be honest, I believe that in todays world, a black Captain America would work even better than a white one.

I mean, sure it can be hard for some of you to imagine (not trying to be rude here or anything towards americans), but the flag, patriotism, “God bless America” and so on… The rest of the world doesn’t really go for that stuff (at least that’s the way I see it). And you can’t really make a “Captain America” movie without these things, can you?

Having a black Cap (done right!) would draw people’s attentions away from all the stuff I mentioned. They would be more open minded towards the film, AND it could polish the image of America for the rest of the world.

  53. Jonesy says:

A super-patriotic hero thats white is just too much for leftist Hollywood to take. So they make the character black, then its politically correct enough for them to stomach.

This is the trend anyhow. Try to make action heroes minorities or women. So this doesnt surprise me. And the only time they use white actors in action movies is if theyre short and kinda wimpy. So maybe this is the best we could hope for. The alternative was probably Shia LaBeouf

  54. Shane says:

What garbage. I can’t believe anyone would even consider this for a second. Sometimes you just have to realize that an actor simply cannot play certain roles. Captain America is white. If he was black, due to the time period he came from it would totally change the dynamic of who he was, and what the film would be about.

There’s no shortage of talented white actors who would LOOK like the character, so that the story can focus on THE CHARACTER without having to change the entire theme of the film to accommodate a stupid casting decision.

Just like the way Harrison Ford, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon have all had to come to terms with the fact that they will never play Martin Luthor King, Will Smith will just have to accept that he is not made for the role of Captain America.

Besides, they already wrote a Superhero movie specifically for him. Does he really need to be in another? It’d just be Hancock with a blue suit. Wow.

  55. giren says:

Hancock? Franchise? really? Then it would be a BAD idea for him to play America!

  56. Chris says:

Was it just me or does anyone else remember it being said that we would see Captain America somewhere in The Hulk movie. If that was in fact true, then Will Smith could not be Captain America.

  57. THE Steve Rogers says:

Will Smith is a huge box office draw. The exact definition of a movie star. Marvel did a limited series a few years back called “Truth: Red, White, and Black” where they redid the mythos of Captain America as a black man.

I suppose if they really wanted to stick to the story of young man who really wanted to serve his country so much he volunteered for experiments they could revamp it so it’s more similar to the Tuskegee (SP?) experiment, which is the story from Truth, but that wouldn’t be Steve Rogers, it would be Isiah Bradley.

The problem is theres is a story of another marvel hero who subjected himself to experiments and became a super hero- Luke Cage. Luke Cage, given a chance, could be a great movie franchise on it’s own. I’d rather see they stick to the story for each character. And besides… whoever winds up playing Steve Rogers should be under 30… Steve Rogers is about 22 when his origin takes place.

  58. anthony says:

ummm no I am black and I dont wanna see captain america black. It just dont feel right you know? Now They should have cast will smith as war machine that woujld have been AWSOME

  59. anthony says:

or better yer yet GREEN LATERN = Will smith HELL YEAH

  60. TM says:

Hum…this thread loves and hates the idea of Will Smith playing Captain America.

I don’t mind it, but if you gave me a choice of 2 established actors, one being white, the other black. I have to say that I will lean toward the white guy as Captain America has always been white in every comic and cartoon.

I think there is a need for a comparison. They need to stand Mr. Smith up to other actors, white and black and make a choice. We need someone to compare him to.

Still, in the end, I don’t mind Will playing the role, just not thrilled about it.

  61. coldcoffee says:

I am a big fan of Will, but I don’t think he should play Captain America for 2 reasons:

    - 1st of all, he doesn’t look like the title character and I wouldn’t want to see too many major changes from what I saw in the comic

    - Secondly, as I mentioned, I am a fan of Will Smith and his charm is what sets him apart from other actors. I don’t think he would be able to use that charm with a straight arrow, boy scout character like Cap. I mean, he could certainly try to do it, but I think his charm and appeal would be lost on this character.

  62. JAY says:

Yo! NO kneeggas in da supa-hero flick. Dis shit IS bad!

Overall, regardless of race, the selection is downright absurd. A comical mania that destorys the spirit of America and the essence of the character. John’s point#2 nails it hard.

  63. Pman67 says:

    “JAY

Yo! NO kneeggas in da supa-hero flick. Dis shit IS bad!

Overall, regardless of race, the selection is downright absurd. A comical mania that destorys the spirit of America and the essence of the character. John’s point#2 nails it hard.”

How does a black man portraying a white comic book character destroy the American sprit? Even though the casting is wrong, it would pretty much hit what America is supposed to stand for. All men are created equal, remember that? Love the idea or hate it. You can’t get more American than having a black man play a historically white character that’s supposed to stand for everything that’s right about this country.

  64. Margroks says:

I would disagree with those who think Will Smith is just a movie star and not a great actor. Will Smith has proven himself a fine actor on many occasions, whether it’s a serious role or one with more humor and even Captain America can use some humor. The concern that the choice of Smith would alter the character in that we wouldn’t get that blond, blue-eyed all-American guy fighting Hitler’s Nazi goons is also a valid point but ultimately, a comic character must have those core traits that are the traditional hallmark of that character and appearance should be secondary to that. I must be able to recognize a character by his or her actions first and foremost or the character, and the story, fail.

It’s why so many people hate the appalling Not-Lois of Smallville, because she is depicted as an uneducated bimbo airhead who slept with her boss and got favors for it. Lois Lane could be an African American but I’ll never accept her as a girl without even a high school education who was hired for her body and screwed the boss in the janitor’s closet.

So give Will Smith a chance; let’s see what he can bring to the role. It’s what we find inside the character that counts; over fifty years of reading comics have taught me that. Bring me Will Smith as Captain America and he might be winner.

My point was directed specifically at Will Smith. I just would have preferred another black actor – Denzel or Djimon.

  66. P-man says:

    @Jay,

My mistake, I guess I misunderstood where you were going with that, but come on Djimon? Really? At least Will has an American accent. Captain America, sounding like a guy from the islands! Now that’s what America is all about baby!

    @ P-Man

I remember Will Smith trying to revive the role of another predominantly white character and Bombed, that being “Captain James West” aka The Wild Wild West. I knew that movie was doomed from the start, just as Captain America would be too with Will as Steve Rogers.

Robert Conrad was just ingrained into that role and also the Psyche of movie goers and TV viewer fans everywhere. Anyone who says it made no difference that Will Smith was black playing the lead in Wild Wild West is in severe denial and maybe should seek help. There were certain expectations of that character (James West) and of course time period that Will Smith was just not able to overcome! No matter how much I like him as a man and good actor, he is just not right for the Captain America role!

  68. Art says:

I am the biggest Will Smith fan! I’ll watch anything with him in it. But I don’t see him doing this role. Would he do a great job of it? Of course! He’s Will Smith!! But he wouldn’t do the best job possible for the role. I still say that Leonardo Dicaprio needs to hit the gym for the next year or so, get mega buffed and cut, and then do Captain America! He’s come a long way since his sissy, emo performance in Titanic. He’d be great for the role!

  69. Mattiac says:

I like Will Smith and will buy Hancock on DVD because it’s a good movie and he’s good in it, but I don’t think that he will be a good Captain America. He don’t look like the character in the comics! And besides; he has already played a superhero in Hancock!! I think that an actor only should do only one superhero-role in their career for sake of continuity.

When are they gonna make a movie about Captain Obvious?

I liked the movie “Wild wild west”!

  70. Mattiac says:

I forgot to add: I’m Swedish (always have been a Swedish citizen) so it’s best that you Americans decides who’s gonna be Captain America.

  71. Wing Chun Geologist says:

I’m a fan of both Will Smith and Captain America…and I think idea is totally lame.

I realize that replacing existing superheroes with new minority characters taking over the title role has become the new big thing.

Kill off Blue Beatle and replace him with a Hispanic.

    Replace Nighthawk with an African-American.

    Replace Firestorm with an African-American.

I haven’t connected with any of the comic characters after the switch, because it feels so contrived.

I think it will be even worse for Will Smith as Captain America, because CA is such an iconic figure, that fans already have a connection to.

I would really like to see Smith take on the role of the Black Panther. There’s really no other actor in Hollywood who could do that role.

  72. marco says:

    Yay! It’s not true!

  73. T-Big Mac Attack says:

I am A huge avengers fan and I’m all for them letting Smith play Capt cause the person according to my knowledge that was tested on was black (Sidebar, I’m not raciest at all).My Personal opinion, If they really want smith in the movie i think they should cast him as HAWKEYE. Captain America is not to much of a stretch for Smith but i think it would be cooler to see Smith argue with Cap than be Cap.Plus it would be like him playin the dude form i am legend again and i like than movie

  74. Buckeyejoe2745 says:

ok im not a racist but come on. CAP is a crew cut white guy and call me crazy but thats not will smith. i think hes a great actor and does some great work and i do think he could pull it off but the whole movie would just be weird with a black cap. now im not big on the comics i just no some stuff so i dont want to act like i made CAP but no. if u want will smith in marvel make him the black panther or something

  75. shy green says:

I HOPE WILL DOES GET THIS ROLE…CUZ WILL IS ONE HELL OF A ACTOR & IM NOT JUST SAYING CUZ HES BLACK I JUST KNOW HE CAN BE ONE HELL OF A CAPTAIN AMERICA…

  76. matt says:

the green lantern isn’t black either….theres more than one. hal jordan is the white one and jon stewart is the black one. captain america is white…if black people want a super hero his name is hancock.
