I think it to be not needed. The Hobbit is related to the Lord of The Rings... no doubt, but it has a very different feel and voice than it's larger brothers. It is a childrens book really with more songs and ryhms and this should be the way the film should be approached. It is good that del Toro is a fresh director for this film as it should look and feel completely different from The Lord of The Rings films. He is great at crafting very storybook like environments to move the vehicle of the film! ...And that is the way that this movie needs to be played. Entering in "bridge material" sounds bad to me. I would be happy if it was two movies like "Kill Bill 1 and 2". Or like "The Godfather 1 and 2". But, just seperate the book at half way point and finish the second in the second film.
