Netflix To Charge $1/Month Extra For Blu-Ray

By John - October 10, 2008 - 00:14 America/Montreal

Netflix really is a remarkable service. When I stop and think about it, it’s probably the single best entertainment deal out there bar none. For $16/month I get about 15 DVD rentals plus all the streaming movies right on my TV through my Roku player. It’s a bargain.!

However, no matter how this company treats its customers, some people with an over inflated sense of entitlement will find a way to complain about this next item. It seems Netflix is going to start charging you a whopping $1 extra dollar a month on your plan if you get any Blu-Ray titles on your que.

Netflix informed their customers through email about this a few days ago. They cited the fact that Blu-Ray discs are more expensive for them to purchase and keep stocked than regular DVDs (which they are) and needed to offset that extra expense. How dare they!?!?!

But seriously, I think Netflix should be praised for ONLY increasing monthly fees by $1 for those that use Blu-Ray. It is a significantly more expensive media to stock and the fact that they’re only charging $12 extra bucks a year to get them is beyond commendable. It’s still the best deal around. But like I said, some people feel they are entitled to everything for free and will probably bitch about this, but I think it’s more than reasonable.

  1. Agreed – where I heard a while back that there was going to be a price increase, I rolled my eyes, imagining another $5 out the window each month. But when I found out it was only a buck, I was pleasantly surprised! Go Netflix!

To be honest I much prefer the enjoyment of adding to my DVD library than to merely rent

  3. A dollar is nothing. Hell, you can’t even buy a cup of coffee for that. But I’m still pissed that Canadians don’t have Netflix…yet.

well said…a dollar is more than fair. You can’t get that deal at blockbuster,,,,

That is seriously cheap. I want something like this in europe too. Want to decrease illegal downloading….MORE THINGS LIKE THIS.

I signed up a month and a half ago and have always paid this extra dollar for Blu-Ray. Fuck me I want retribution!

I agree, people love to complain about Netflix and I really don’t get it. They’re one of the only companies that I’ve dealt with for seven or eight years and never gotten upset with.

I don’t have a blu-ray player, but when I do get one I imagine I’ll still only rent certain movies in that format. So it makes sense to me that if it increases their bottom line that they should charge the people who use the feature a minimum amount rather than raising prices across the board.

I’m personally not rocking the Blu-ray quite yet, however, if you truly think about Netflix’s demographics I’m sure that this way they can get moe Blu-Ray Saturation, as well as more incomke for them. It’s win win.

I just wonder is Sony kicked them back some $ to make it even more palatable to be a Blu-Ray consumer?

I got a PS3 for my birthday this July, it gets used mostly as a Blu-Ray player. So when i saw that email the other day I got nervous. Then I opened it up and saw it was only going up a buck. Been a Netflix user since 2000, and its reasons like this I will continue to be one.

I was nervous opening the e-mail. I am a little annoyed about the situation, but only because I don’t rent a blu ray disc EVERY month. I think it’d be more reasonable to charge the increase on months where I do rent blu. I just remember a year or so ago when Netflix added HD video to their service and made a big plug (through a similar e-mail) about how it would cost the same. Overall, could definitely be worse and I am not that annoyed… just disappointed. I almost feel like I have to rent all blu…
