Saw Series Makes A Killing, Sets Record For Domestic Horror Release

By Doug - October 27, 2008 - 10:12 America/Montreal

SawIt looks like the Saw series continues to chip away gold from the movie going public, earning itself the distinction of highest grossing franchise in horror history. We get the following announcement thanks to our friends at cinematical:

When you shelled out nine bucks this weekend to see if Jigsaw would do anything new in Saw V (answer: nope), you were also contributing to a milestone. With the Friday-Sunday $30 million haul, the Saw series is now the highest grossing horror franchise in history, with a cumulative domestic gross of $316 million.

Consistent numbers thanks to a following of faithful fans has made the SAW franchise a very profitable endeavor. I remember the initial internet teasers that were released for the first film. I certainly didn’t expect SAW to become a franchise (much less a successful one pulling down consistent money with quality returns).

SAW will never be a blockbuster, but what it has done and will continue to do is offer a product for a niche market of devoted gore hounds.

Congrats to the makers and fans of SAW for making this milestone happen.

every year with my special lady I go see Saw(n+1) for the math geeks but every year it gets slightly more, being out of tradition, it’s always a great crowd and atmosphere at the theatre though

  2. brian says:

    It could be worse.
HighSchoolMusical 3 could have been the #1 movie in…

    oh nevermind.

(note:no TMB review for THAT film, so count yer blessings!)

    When will it just END!?

  5. bigsampson says:

I like the saw movies, I’m not a big fan but enjoy them, although I do think they make them very fast. Every year there’s a new sequel.

Their trying to create a franchise like Halloween or Friday the 13th (in a way where there’s multiple sequel’s) but in a very fast paste.

everytime someone watches these movies and enjoys them,

i die a little in the inside.

  9. I haven’t seen a Saw movie since the original (which sucked hardcore). At this point I’m just watching from the sidelines as the series just keeps on going like the energizer bunny. I wonder if their going to start throwing in gimmicks at some point like Saw 3D (that’s right 3D torture porn), or how about Saw in space, or Saw in tha Hood, or Saw 22 Electric Boogaloo, or Saw vs. Hostel. The posibilities are endless.

  10. David Lopan says:

4 was the biggest piece of crap I’ve seen since Cloverfield. (don’t worry I rented both on netflix, didn’t waste money on seeing either in the theaters). I am not surprised at the negative press that 5 is getting and that people are still loving this garbage. The franchise has lost its credibility loooooong ago.

  11. NoName says:

Good question, who keeps watching these movies? First two are ok but four and six is pointless.

  12. David Sabia says:

I went to see this movie the night it came out into theaters. I would highly recommend not going to see it. I never really watched any of the other saw movies so I was a little lost. This movie was way out in left field. None of it made any sense.

  13. jaffahut says:

Well that Might be because you haven’t seen the previous films of the franchise, but anyhoo… Yeah I bet it sucks balls.
I’m still going to at least Try watching this movie, just for the sake of it

  14. joonavar says:

Saw was on tv the other week and I re-watched it for entertainment purposes – God it makes me literally laugh out loud whenever I view it. Worst ‘horror’ movies…ever.
