I have such incredibly fond recollections of this film. It helped shape my opinion of what “great” is, in a movie.

That is a fantastic movie – I watched it for the first time on DVD, one of those early ones that were laserdisc transfers which required you flip the disc halfway through. Was Mr. Bond there in person, Doug, or did he deliver his message on screen? And if it’s the former, did you get to meet the great Scotch bastard?

I’m so envious… The Man Who Would be King is my all time favorite movie. My father introduced me to it when I was in high school and I haven’t quit wandering the globe in search of high adventure since. This also happens to be one of those rare gems that is better than the book (or short story in this case), which, like all of Kipling’s work, was wonderful.
