Bond Plunders Bounty From British Box Office

By Doug - November 3, 2008 - 09:01 America/Montreal

Champion Caves of Yahoo:

The new James Bond film, “Quantum of Solace,” debuted in Britain on Friday to record one-day ticket sales of 4.94 million pounds ($8 million), distributor Columbia Pictures said on Saturday.

The total tops “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” the previous record holder with an opening day haul of 4.025 million pounds ($6.5 million) in 2005, and it also beat the 2.9 million pounds ($4.72 million) first-day total for the last Bond flick, “Casino Royale” (2006), Columbia said.

I loved Casino Royale and hope this continuation keeps the quality that we saw in the initial outing. If this film ends up dropping the ball, I will be very disappointed.

I expect strong numbers from Bond On home turf, but this record setting is certainly well above that. Beating high lord Potter is no small task and with luck, the success of the film will be worthy of its quality. If any of our friends from the UK have seen this film – please fill us in on your thoughts.

I saw it Doug and it’s good…..just not as good as Casino Royale, not even close. I mean the amount of action, if you counted 1,2,3,4 and so on of actual action sequences then there’s more in this one than the last but it just doesn’t seem to flow as the last one did. The emotive qualities are hard to find here and the script is nothing more than “adequate”. But on the action front it’s exhilirating, definitely. Overall I’d give it a solid 7/10.

  2. Gordon Shumway says:

I really liked it. Bigger scale than Casino Royale, more locations, action scenes, I think it had enough character time aswell. Being the shortest Bond so far, it didnt drag or seem rushed. There were even laughs within reason.

Also Jack Whites theme song was not bad in the context of the credit sequence, I dont really like it as a song on its own. Thats my general thoughts.

  3. Doug Nagy says:

Cheers guys, I am very pleased with your thoughts.

Thank you very much for sharing!

  4. Ross says:

I HATED the theme song. I don’t mind the song in general (pretty much the opposite of you, Gordon) but within the context of the film I thought it was horrible. Stuck out like a sore thumb, along with the animation of the title sequence which was bad (helluva a lot better than I could ever do, for sure, but you know…), and in my opinion it goes down in movie history as one of the worst Bond themes ever.

  5. Kristina says:

I’m no Bond fan, but the commercials do look really good. That shot of him walking over the hill in slo-mo and raising that gun is an awesome shot.

  6. Anders says:

    Hi,

the film opened in Sweden this weekend as well. 4th ever biggest opening here despite overwhelmingly bad reviews.

Sadly, the movie was a huge dissappointment. I went along with 7 more friends and after the film we all concluded the film was shit. The problem is the plot. It’s all over the place and incomprehensible. You couldn’t understand why things were happening, who the characters were and what the fuck James was doing. He was basically killing everyone in sight but since we didn’t know who they were or why he was killing them we couldn’t care less.

Despite having some cool action sequences it felt like watching a car race on tv. Yea, lots of action but not very interesting.

Of course, the movie is going to make a ton of cash, but for all the wrong reasons. It will be interesting to read your take on it.

  7. Tobes says:

I was really happy with Quantum. Saw it late Friday and was close to being asleep at the end of a long day whilst the adverts rolled. As soon as the film started I was more than awake, the first half hour has plenty of action and Craig is just a pleasure to watch. I agree that the Theme song sucked and those 3 minute Bond montages really only work if the the song is an absolute killer. All in all, no dissapointments as a die hard fan but doesn’t beat Casino Royale for me. I partly think thats due to the novelty of having had a brand new hard as nails Bond in Craig.

  8. Robert(wolf) says:

I saw the film and here is my thoughts on it.

    The Good

Craig has proven to me once again that he is the best Bond. Craig brings a cold, but yet charming Bond who still makes many mistakes because he is too sure of his actions. This is a Bond I would be intimidated to be around. Olga Kurylenko was an actress who I was worried about in film, but you know what? She did a damn good job. She wasn’t a damsel in distress which I dug.

The action in Quantum is amazing, from sea to air. The action is hard hitting and sometimes you could feel the pain these characters were going through. The action was a little bit too fast at times, but for most part it was eye candy on screen. I have no idea how Bond could walk away after all these fights he encountered. I read Craig got some injuries during filming and you can see why during the action scenes.

    The Bad

The biggest weakness to Solace is the plot. The film is confusing as hell at times. I don’t know about any of you, but I’m still scratching my head at some parts. Be sure you have all concentration while viewing, taking your eyes off the screen for one second will send you into a lost Paradise. I also didn’t like the build up with Mr White. This guy is on screen for five minutes, and then he is gone. I dug him as a villain, but the main villain becomes Dominic Greene, who I felt was ok. Mr White would have been a much better lead villain.

Like I said above, some of the action was way to fast at times to the point where I couldn’t tell what was going on, but that is a minor thing in only one or two scenes.

Quantum Of Solace is a solid good movie. If you liked Casino Royale, then you’ll enjoy Solace. Royale is a much better movie, simple plot, but has good depth. Solace has an overcomplicated plot with not much depth. It’s all action, action, action in this one.

  9. Phil Gee says:

@Kristina, just so you know, that image is purely promotional and not in the film.

This is one of those films where I can totally understand why people don’t like it at all; it definately has flaws. I think it really helps to go in with no expectations. That’s what I did and ended up having a great time.

Positives: Craig is the fucking man in this film. There were at least five moments in the film where I was going “you’re the coolest man alive James Bond”. The relationship between Bond and M is the best its ever been, imo, and really is the heart of the film. It’s beautifully shot, none of the locations go to waste and did I mention that the film moves like bloody lightning?

Negatives: With the exception of two brutal and amazing fight scenes, the action sequences are completely ruined by the’ shake’nconfuse o’cam’ and editing. Almaric does his best but gets no time to really make an impression as the baddie and when he fights Bond, there is no reason to care because there’s no antagonism between them. Worst of all, the film has great ideas and a clear theme running through it but the script is so underdeveloped that nothing really stays with you the way it did in Royale. All of this could have been solved if they’d had a little more time to work on the script. It was so nearly a great film.

Overall, I really felt it was a tight ‘Flemingesque’ thriller that is a thoroughly enjoyable ride. If only they’d had more time to work on that script.

  10. Phil Gee says:

    @Robert(wolf)

I honestly didn’t find it that hard to follow except for one ten stretch which was so rushed and badly cut together that I was taken out of the film. I can’t really talk about it since spoilers would be involved (lets say it partly involves a friend of Bond’s ending up in the back of a car and me having no idea why or how).

One thing is for sure. The film does not stand by itself. You need to have seen Casino Royale, otherwise the references to Vesper’s boyfriend will have you throwing in the towel before the ten minute mark:)

  11. Shovels Popcorn says:

Reading these opinions is tearing me apart. Looks like I’m going in with lower expectations. Who knows, I thought Speed Racer was awesome, maybe I’ll overlook the flaws in this one too.

  12. Phil Gee says:

I really wouldn’t worry too much sir. It’s splitting people down the middle so there’s every chance you will like it.

Even if people don’t, I think we’d agree we’ve had a pretty damn good year for blockbusters.

  13. finaljoe says:

If they didn’t call him James Bond you’d think you were watching The Transporter 3 directed by Micahel Bay not a Bond film.

  14. melbye says:

Is it true it doesn’t open with a gun barrel-sequens

  15. grendel25 says:

Casino Royale was my favorite Bond film, so I’m definitely looking forward to this. My big concern is that the reviews I’ve read keep stating that this is more a “Bourne” movie and not a Bond movie because they’ve taken elements of Bond out of it such as him saying “I’m Bond, James Bond.”

I’m glad they’ve updated the concept. I just hope they didn’t jettison what makes Bond Bond.

  16. Sahil says:

$8M is the record? Thats it? What was TDK’s one day record? $70M

  17. Dragonslayer says:

Isn’t Olga Kurylenko in this? Damn she is so HOOOOTTTT…

  18. Dragonslayer says:

I’m not a Bond fan, but I loved Casino Royale. This movie looks even better

  19. Kristina says:

    @Phil Gee

BOO!!!!! Why no use pretty shot in movie? WHY?

  20. Kristina says:

    @Sahil

We’re talking just at British box office alone. TDK’s record is for North America.

  21. Ranting Man says:

This movie was painfully bad. Casino Royale raised the bar….Quantum of Solace dug a hole 6 foot deep. If you fancy watching nearly 2 hours of Bond brooding over his lost love then look no further. If however, you want to watch a Bond film, just watch Royale again..

English Bond girl can’t act to save herself (despite being RADA trained)
and Olga Unpronouncable broods more than Bond. Dull dull dull..

oh…and a rubbish tune along with no gun barrel beginning and a useless villian. Other than that…it was okay…ish ;)

  22. ADOX says:

Jus as good as Royale IMO

LOVED how they DIDN’T shoehorn in a love interested in with the leading lady

  23. Gordon Shumway says:

Ranting Man is the correct name for you :)

Everyones opinion is cool, but the extreme negativity Ive seen around and about would make you think this was James Bond and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Very devisive

  24. ADOX says:

    I liked the song

  25. ADOX says:

still not enough of the car

  26. finaljoe says:

INDY 4 is much better than this turkey.

  27. Kinda cheezeball but what action movie isn’t. I liked it but I like action movies. Go watch terminator, or alienz, or predator, or rocky 5 total cheeze ball but you gotta love em!

  28. Foxy says:

I thought it sucked in all fairness…
I loved casino royale but this was nothing like it…

    Reasons for it sucking:

1.Crap Bad Guy (I didnt find him scary/menancing etc and I forgot about him after the film)
2.Crap Plot, which to me didnt make sense and the characters looked like they didnt care about being there (Apart From Craig)
3.To much shaky cam!!! Keep the frickin camera still…I asked for bond, not bourne lol!!
4.I just got the feeling they rushed the whole thing

Nothing like Royale, which I thought was the best film of 2006
    Just my opinion

  29. HAZMAT_loves_gwyn_paltrow says:

casino royale ruled and QoS will be even better

  30. Dragonslayer says:

I agree, Hamzat. I’m not a Bond fan, and I still can’t forgive them for the vaginal belch they called Die Another Day, but damn this movie looks so cool.

  31. McLovin says:

I’ve been a bond fan for well over 20 years. Seen them all loads of times.
Casino Royale was my best cinema experience of 2006. I looked very forward to this but was very disapointed.

Boring drab crap for the most part. Has its moments, but overall very poor. I loved the touch screen computers which will probably be reality in a few years, and bonds great phone, which must have a 20 mega pixel camera.

Id give this movie 1/10, and Casino Royale 9/10

  32. Gordon Shumway says:

    @ MCLOVIN

google Microsoft Surface, you already get this technology in some restaurants!

  33. HAZMAT_loves_gwyn_paltrow says:

    dragon
when i went to the movies and saw die another day…i came out very pleased

thats my true thought on it
