Mulan is one of Disney’s best films, but it does bother me that the film drives home the message that, even as brave as this woman is, she still needs a man in order for her story to end happily. Her story is strong enough that the love story BS was insulting, to be honest. All of China bows before her (the best scene in the whole film), but that wasn’t enough for the folks at Disney. It’s a shame that the movie starts out by mocking this misconception only to succumb to it in the finale.

Hua Mu-Lan is the brave woman who disguised herself as a man to take her aged father’s place in the army and rose to become a great general. Music, drama, and action all roll into one to make this movie a timeless favorite.
