Nicole Kidman to Retire from Acting??

By Rodney - November 19, 2008 - 06:35 America/Montreal

Nicole Kidman hinted that she might be considering retiring from her 25 year career as an actress. Maybe to have kids, or whatever else she wants to do. Nothing stopping her.

Yahoo speaks:

During a Sydney press conference today to promote the Down Under premiere of Australia, the Oscar winner hinted she may soon be forsaking the big screen for another round of diaper duty, or other more personal endeavors.

“In terms of my future as an actor and stuff, I don’t know,” the 41-year-old mother of three said. “I am in a place in my life where…I’ve had some great opportunities, and I may just choose to have some more children.”

Not that I have any say in the matter, but if she wants to quit acting, I say that is her call. She lists her experience with Australia as a dream for her since she was a child. Though born in Hawaii, she lived her life past the age of 4 in Australia and started acting at the age of 15. She is now 41, so she has put in her time. Let the girl have a life now that she never has to worry about money again.

She is saying she might quit acting, but I hope we get at least one more big film out of her. Her next role (which could be her last if she doesn’t line up more) is playing a post op transexual male opposite Charlize Theron. I would hope that she would want her last role to be remembered by would be something that compliments her beauty and grace as opposed to going out of the business playing a man.

Quit while you are on top and swimming in cash. Nothing wrong with that.

Carrot Top is still trying. Look how that works out?

I wonder why actors who dont need the money officially retire. Why not do a film once every 4 years or something like that? Whos going to depict old people in films if the actors retire? Stallone isnt versatile enough to do it all.

  2. Rodney says:

@Party Marty … who says they have to keep acting?

You think there are not enough actors in Hollywood? People only work the same job for 25 years to get the pension so they can retire… they don’t come back and work the factory just for the hell of it, or just to see the old guys again.

Sometimes your job gets in the way of what you really want to do with your time (and what you want changes over time too) and her career certainly filled her pockets, so if she wants to quit, she will.

  3. martha yost says:

good for her. she’s worked hard and long and should leave on a high note.

  4. Dragonslayer says:

I’ve never been a fan of Nicole Kidman (if you ask me she kinda sucked in The Golden Compass), but I’m surprised.

  5. dani says:

    She’s 41 already?! I thought she’s only in her late 30s… wow

And as for her retiring, well too bad for us movie goers. Good for her though.

But I have a hunch that when actors say they’ll retire, they’d go out of their retirement when a movie role that’s too juicy to pass over comes along.

  6. Pedro says:

She earned the money. If she wants to retire, good for her. Hell I wish I could retire when I turn 41!!

“Carrot Top is still trying. Look how that works out?”

    That is funny!!!!!!

  7. Kristina says:

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

She is my favorite actress! I love her! Don’t go Nicky!

  8. Meli says:

I think it’s respectable and admirable to want something different/more from life. If she steps away from acting I will miss her because she is a wonderful talent.

  9. Party Marty says:

Not such a great analogy their Rodney. As an old factory worker you’d be doing the same job as the young guys but more slowly and in pain. As an old actor you play old characters, father figures and positions of dignity and gravitas. Returning to the fore occasionally to give great performances that will live on longer than any factory product. If Caine, Freeman and Streep retired so soon we’d all have missed out.

  10. aaron says:

she was never very good in my book

  11. Rodney says:

The analogy works fine. She did the same thing for 25 years and though she is capable of doing it, she is more interested in doing something else. No one complains when someone retires from a 25 year old job, but you think she should keep doing it?

  12. Obi-Wan kubrick says:

No offense to Nicole whom I used to be in love with but she is probably retiring since she hasn’t done anything great since… 1996?

  13. Party Marty says:

Well my original point was more general, about any actors. I dont care too much for Kidman. You cant do one factory shift every 5 years or so, but with acting, you can cherry pick prime projects. If it was me I would just downscale my workload incase I started feeling the need again. But if she wants completely out then thats fine.

  14. Kristina says:

    @Obi-Wan Kubrick

    MOULIN ROUGE !
    MOULIN ROUGE !
    MOULIN ROUGE !
    MOULIN ROUGE !

  15. Cathy says:

She’s said this same thing for years about retiring. I wish she would just shut up and do it. She was back on a film set within a month after having the baby, not the moves of somebody willing to walk away from it all.

  16. DG Music says:

Fucking finally…I still don’t see how people can keep saying this woman is a good actress. Don’t get me wrong…she’s not bad…but what on earth makes everyone parade around her like she deserves an oscar?

  17. she has it says:

What ever that special thing is, Kidman has it and if you don’t see it ,either your blind or just plain tuned out!

  18. DG Music says:

I don’t think I’m blind or tuned out…I just think I have certain preferences, and she meets none of them. In my opinion she has nothing on other actresses – Cate Blanchett for example hasn’t had the pleasure of landing many overly awesome roles like Kidman has, yet everything she happens to be in she manages to rape magnificently :P

But hey I’m merely stating my own personal opinion about Kidman. I know there’s a huge fanbase and it’s understandable lots and lots of people would be saddened by the news of her retiring…

…I’m just not one of them.

  19. Rodney says:

So Cate Blanchett ruins every movie she is in? So Elizabeth, Talented Mr Ripley, and Lord of the Rings were all “raped” because of her?

And people parade around her like she deserves an Oscar because she has. Not to mention a pantload of Golden Globes and various other awards. And her roles are very diverse. She is quite qualified.

  20. HAZMAT says:

kate blanchet is beautiful…if it wasnt for gwyneth paltrow shed be my numero uno

    then kidman

  21. Hopefull the new one with Hugh Jackman will erase the taste of “Invasion” out of our collective consciousness. Best of luck to her in any case.

  22. Dragonslayer says:

Cate Blanchett, as much as I think she’s a great actress and is pretty, her weakness in accents. Save LOTR, her accents in The Aviator and Indy 4 were annoying and terrible.

I think Kidman is a goods actress, but she was never a favorite of mine.
