Steven Spielberg and Will Smith To Remake Old Boy
It appears the legendary Korean film Old Boy is going to be remade by the superstar Hollywood team of Spielberg and Smith. We get the scoop from our friends at comingsoon:
Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are in early discussions to collaborate on a remake of Chan Wook-park’s Oldboy, says Variety. DreamWorks is in the process of securing the remake rights, and the new film will be distributed by Universal.
In the 2003 Korean original, a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he’s released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge. Smith who would play the kidnapped man if all the pieces fall into place. Spielberg is looking for a writer to begin the development process.
I have yet to see this Korean film. Every time I mention that I haven’t seen it people usually say “you haven’t seen Old Boy; what the fuck!” It’s a film that comes highly recommended and has had heaps of praise piled upon it.
I can only imagine that some of you are quite disgusted at the news of a Hollywood remake with Spielberg and Smith at the helm.
If they remake this film I sincerely hope they keep it as dark violent and violent as the original. People have very strong feelings towards this picture and I would hate to see it watered down. In light of this remake news I am going to finally track this down and watch it – so I may have a more educated opinion on the matter.
International friends – what do you think about this news. I am especially interest to know the thoughts of Old Boy fans.

Spielberg is my favorite director, and I think he proved with movies like Jaws, Saving Private Ryan, and Schindler’s List that he can do R Rated movies just as well as family-friendly movies.
WOW. The worst idea i have ever heard in my years on earth. They are going to have to change the whole incest thing and make it super gay or they’re going to stick to the script go for that oscar gold. Either way they both should burn for ruining this classic that’s only a few years old anyway.
So even if they stick tot he original scene-by scene, it’s ruining it? Cause that’s what you just said.
Gotta love the close-mindedness of the Internet community. I keep saying it, there hasn’t been one single movie announced in the last 5 years, that didn’t have lots of hate directed at it by the internet community.
My brain was torn to shreds by the WTF-amazing-ness of the original Old Boy, and I won’t believe that this remake will be just as dark, brutal, and gut-wrenching until I see it with my own eyes. The Infernal Affairs remake (The Departed) was actually decent, albeit unnecessary, so maybe this will be a similar situation.
What’s next their going to remake Fight Club?
Can people just read subtitles? Lazy fuckers. Hollywood’s gotta stop this “remake everything” trend, and come up with their own material for once. At least… since this will happen no matter what, Scosese would’ve been a hella better choice. And as for Will Smith…? I am speechless… This looks like a team up of Spielberg and Smith for their own satisfaction rather than to do a justice to an original film.
I knew they were trying to secure the rights to this (and Lady Vengeance, from the same trilogy) for some time now but didn’t think it would come to us as quickly. And never in a million years did I see Spielberg attaching himself to it and even more than that I did NOT see Will Smith in the equation. I don’t think Smith is the right fit for the role, certainly not for the type of role it is in the original.
As you say, Doug, I hope they keep it as dark as possible, or else it loses it’s appeal. It’s a through and through part of what Oldboy is, the darkness and violence is essential to telling the story. Who knows perhaps they will water it down to a revenge film with minimal violence (they may want to to secure the box office numbers that Smith and Spielberg are prone to conjuring) which would make me very upset.
This is my favourite foreign film and easily in my top 10 films of all time. I wish they just would leave it alone but if worst comes to the worst and it completely sucks ass – like John is always saying – we still have the original.
Oh and Doug…..yeah, go rent the film asap. You won’t regret it.
Remakes have a tendency to annoy me, but the occasional one is entertaining. Who cares if they are remaking it? I realise people get all up in arms about remakes etc, but the fact is, what if the remaking of a film shines a spotlight on an otherwise (relatively) obscure masterpiece? What if the remaking of this film brings others into the fold where we sit and swoon over the original works?
Is it unfair to want that for the originals filmmakers?
The fact is, I have never NOT enjoyed Will Smith in a film.
The greater issue here, that I think people need to ask, is why Steven Spielberg, one of the Greatest Modern American Storytellers, is now sticking to remakes and franchises.
Has the creative well run dry?
i honestly can’t see will smith starring in this – old boy is super duper twisted. plus, i can’t see them improving on scenes like the hammer fight. i’d definitely recommend checking this one out, doug.
you haven’t seen Old Boy; what the fuck?
And I AM disgusted at the idea of a remake. Just leave it alooooone!
uumm sad rockstar doug did say in his post he hasn’t seen the film yet so you might want to keep shush on any potential spoilers but I agree with you completely. I do not believe a hollywood a list version of this story will keep all the fucking jaw dropping elements that make the thing so great especially the main one….there is no way on earth they will have will smith _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ if you know what I am saying.
Yes if even they do it scene by scene it will suck. Totally unnecessary is the only way to describe this idea. Will Smith hasn’t done anything good since Men In Black. He is a black Tom Cruise, same performance in every movie they are in.
If they stick to the original, I think this will be the film to test Will Smith’s Box Office. The original was so fucked up, I’m not sure Will Smith’s core audience can handle it. But if Spielberg softens it up, that will be fucked up.
I hope Will Smith can go through the character changes that Dae-Su goes through. Will he grow a massive 14 years worth of afro hair? Its a real shame that this needs to be remade for America, if only more people could accept subtitles.
This movie should be left alone. I don’t see Spielberg doing it as ultraviolent as the original, not to mention the incest thing.
sigh….i was gonna come in here and rant about remakes, but im tired of it….i think this is a bad idea, but even if it sucks i’ll always have the original….and please dont touch Sympathy for mr vengeance…..just as good as old boy….
Spielberg and Will Smith? Are you fucking kidding me?
Let’s go ahead and plan the Old Boy ride at Disney World while we are at it.
“you haven’t seen Old Boy; what the fuck?”
Well… I’ll wait to see. I liked a lot “Old boy”. I’m not surprised that somebody will do an american version… We saw it a lot in the last few years.
Steven Spielberg is a great director (except in the “War of the Worlds” – my opinion). He knows adapt some films… Lets see what he is going to do with the existing material.
In the case of Will Smith, i hope he can handle with it.
There’s no need for a remake. The original is absolutely brilliant and I’d hate to think that Will Smith is going to tarnish this great film. I have nothing against Smith, it’s just that the film doesn’t need to be remade at all.
If they have to show it in American theatres without subtitles, can’t they just make a really excellent dub of the film.
I agree with the majority. Don’t see the need. It’s as someone else already has said… probably just for Spielber and Smith’s personal reasons rather than for a crowd. I personally didn’t think the original was all that great. But I am the only person alive that feels that way. I didn’t hate it, just didn’t affect me the way it does most I suppose.
Theres already an indian rip-off/ remake called Zinda. I saw a clip of the corridor fight that they copied, its awful of course.
This is just strange news. Oldboy is such a dark and disturbing story that I couldn’t imagine “Mr. Clean” Will Smith or Speilberg putting their names to it.
Bad idea.
The Count of Monte Cristo
Oldboy is awesome, smit isnt a bad actor but will all these blockbuster (yes happyness and ali are the ‘’serious” movies that i have seen from him) bur even with those im not sure about he acting in a oldboy remake, i can easily see a dialogue after his characters after all the years”I need some real food, like a hamburger”
i’m in if and only if steve gets will to eat the live squid.
This has potential to be good if the darkness of the original is kept intact. Oldboy is my favorite asian film next to infernal affairs and versus…I was pleasantly surprised with how great The Departed was. If they continue on the route like the Departed was done, this has potential to be fantastic. Everyone is forgetting that Speilberg is great at doing dark, graphic, and suspenseful films. ie: Munich, Saving Private Ryan, Minority Report, Jaws…let’s see what happens.
I remember the time I realized the ending and I screamed “OMG!”
This may be in my top 3 foreign films ever, and I honestly don’t see this working with Speilberg and Smith. This needs to have a more independent feel to it, with indie actors, a strong script, and a visually oriented filmmaker, kind of like a low budget Zack Snyder…Maybe a Rian Johnson?? Or hell, here’s a novel idea, LEAVE IT THE FUCK ALONE
Wow, I cant believe we went this far without someone insisting that an Asian cast be used in an American Remake of a Korean film.
Guess its only racist to replace an Asian cast if you don’t use another minority group?
The Korean film is raved about, so why remake it? Money.
I could get deep and philosophical, but its just money. And Smith doesn’t disappoint me in the action or acting department, so I look forward to seeing what they do with this.
Remake of Old Boy….not crazy about it but ok. It was a pretty cool movie with one hell of a mindfuck ending, but…..a remake of it with Spielberg and Smith??? No way. Not that I have anything against either one of them; shit I really dig them both actually, but the best part of Old Boy was the ending BY FAR, and there is no way in hell that when these 2 get ahold of this flick that they’re gonna preserve that crazy ass sick ending. So really what’s the point?
A recent South Park episode comes to mind…
I think the difference is that this isn’t animated and when the cartoons look Asian, there is a desire by fans to have Asians in the live action version because they want the live action version to visually resemble the cartoon as much as reasonably possible. I don’t think this is an absurd demand but Hollywood will do what they think is most marketable (emphasis on “think”).
Since Oldboy is already a live action film (and a darn good one at that) then no you won’t hear anybody clamoring for Asian actors in the Hollywood remake.
…I know they are two different genres but to the point of Hollywood desecrating films:
What’s next? V. Hudgens and Z. Efron in the remake of Casablanca???
Okay,Seriously, this is literally the single worst movie related Idea I have ever heard. I am saddened and angry to the point that words cannot express. I can honestly say that i HATE Spielberg. I have literal hate and disgust for the man and I wish bad things for him.
I don’t know – perhaps it would work, but they need to find an older actor who fits the part of the story. It’s like that “Akira Remake” post the other day, let’s just hope it doesn’t get completely bastardized…
FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
BLASPHEMY!
>> If they remake this film I sincerely hope they die horrible deaths

L2WRITE AN ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
I’m thinking the remake will feel too taken out of context if it’s removed from its Korean culture. To cite an example, the whole squid thing is just not going to have the same effect. Maybe a faithful, direct adaptation will do the trick, but then why not just watch the damn movie with subtitles?
Smith might be able to pull it off, but I doubt it. He’ll bring something different to it that might be good but will most likely throw off the goodness of the original.
The Departed was an excellent reinvention of Infernal Affairs, but it was conveyed through different eyes and was good for different reasons than the original. I’m thinking if you try to do the same with OldBoy, the difference will kill it. The cinematography, etc is perfect for the subject matter. No doubt the remake will be filmed through different eyes and wont have the same feel as the old one. I’m just worried/preconceiving that this new feel wont be effective.
“Oldboy” is such a perfect film, and so recent that it seems ridiculous to remake. Plus, the original is gritty and at times disgusting (SPOILER ALERT: incest). While Spielberg has made great dark movies, he’s never touched anything this gritty. His movies always have a Hollywood shine & scale to them, even his darkest ones, which works perfectly in some films, but would utterly fail here. Also, Will Smith is a good actor, sometimes great (Pursuit of Happyness), but this role would be completely wrong for him. I don’t think he’ll be believable, plus he’ll try and own the film with his monster on-screen ego, when the genius of the first film was the seemlesness of the main character within the world. His despiration in the scenes in the prison (which were amazing) will turn into blatant, over-blown Oscar-baiting. The kick-ass fight scenes will lose their rawness for Hollywood shine. The film is so perfect; its twists, its actors, its story, its end. It’s so brilliant, and a remake would be awful.
josh summed it up pretty good
Hollywood is going to ruin another one of my favorite movies…
what are they going to redo next…. Visitor Q? now that would be intresting!
mikey i doubt hollywood has the balls to do anything but miike
anything by miike
wow, while i think will smith is golden, i dont think he can pull off the incest part, also they would probably try to make it with a PG-13 rating
is remake of oldboy necessary? the original was dubbed in english, so people dont have to watch it with subtitles
They make a bad remake, we still have the original to watch.
They make a good remake, and we have two great movies to watch.
What’s the F-ing problem?
And Oldboy is one of my top-ten movies of all times.
But I never got it why people get so pissed about remakes all the time.
If you don’t like remakes, don’t watch them. It’s that simple.
@ HDPunk: Why would you want to watch the original dubbed anyway!? The US audience in general seems to have this gross aversion to having to conform to anybody else’s standards and has to have everything catered to them. Just read a subtitle for once. The rest of the world does it just fine. Try it a few times and soon enough you’ll realize just how much better it is. Too many things get lost in translation anyway.
As for the remake. Personally I’m against the idea, simply because it will get too diluted. If it was an underground director going for an artistic piece then fine… but a big name such as this and Will Smith. They’re going to try to sell this to masses and you can just imagine the outbursts they’d have if they stuck to the original script. The original script is what made the movie. I don’t see Will biting into a live octopus (not like octopus is something that’s often seen in restaurants in Western society anyway). The whole incest thing will get pulled as well no doubt. I’m thinking the only reason they decided to go with it is to try and replicate that awesome fight scene in the lobby.
Obviously things can always be tweaked a bit here and there to make the remake it’s own, but if you’re going to change it completely, why not just cut all ties with the original and make it a fresh movie. It almost seems as if Hollywood now needs a type of film that is between original and a remake. Not either but loosely based on one, because that’s what all modern remakes seem to be.
Asian film studios should stop selling the rights to their movies. First Akira, now this? Asians should start buying the rights to and remaking western films. Imagine Donnie Darko taking place in Tokyo starring a nerdy anime geek.
ummm, Doug…uhhh, you need to see this movie.
wow, the list of movies that has not been seen by the bloggers on this site is shocking. You call yourselves movie geeks?!?? First Last Dragon and now OLD BOY? Quick, somebody pull their Geek Credentials!
It would be nice is certain fucking idiots on this thread would show some consideration for those who haven’t seen the movie.
I saw it just yesterday, and I am so happy I it wasn’t ruined by spoiler fucktards. And there is no way this movie will be as sick as the original being an American movie, it is rated R material if you just put freaking Christopher Walken to narrate the story on an empty room. On second thought get those guys from Crank to do it and you could get it half as sick WTF shit as the original.
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is easier port to American, and a remake could get the movie on the right pace, sure its a weaker movie but its doable.
Just got through watching Old Boy.. Incredible! I don’t think Will Smith is the right one for the role. Willem Defoe just throwing out a name. Where is Charles Bronson when you need him? Oh yeah he’s dead. Clint Eastwood maybe? If Smith did do this I can imagine that it won’t break the $100million per usual. Unless they make a remake of Candy “Good Grief it’s Daddy!” as a buffer for all incest themes. Leave this film alone it’s perfect as it is. Ok, one more inappropriaote reference Chinatown.. Watch the film it’s stunning.
I dont post much but i felt i must, i dont see how this would work… american audiences are not going to accept Will Smith in an incest role… FULL STOP!! maybe they would in an inependant film by some nobody actor and it would become a “cult” classic or something but this must be rumour. c’mon speilberg wants to redo it?? not a new summer blockbuster for 2010 or something!!! but no lets remake a, dont get me wrong, fantastic movie, but this just smells of rumour and only that :)
FunkyMunkey at some point when a movie is some years old, most people have the good sense not to enter a thread about said movie. Because you just know that you are gonna get some spoilers.
Nobody forced you to read the commentaries inside this little story, I am soryy but you only have your self to blame.
If the movie was just out I could understand your hard feelings, but when 5 years have gone by, there really is nop excuse.
That’s like someone explaining what Rosebud is to citezen kane and people yelling spoiler, or that Darth Vader being Luke’s father…..
At some point you are expected to use your common sence and not click on topics involving movies that have been out for 3+ years and exspecting a spoiler free enviroment.

I would like to also add that Doug mentioned he hadn’t seen this and your spoliers are going to ruin this for him. good job guys.
I am guessing he’s not reading this… on account of all the spoilers…
Edvin, look at my FIRST comment: it’s fairly obvious that I have seen the film. Otherwise I wouldn’t have bothered writing such a thing.
I was simply commenting that the people revealing spoilers on here should have some consideration for others – neither I, nor 90% of the others on here felt the need to reveal the film’s themes as it’s unnecessary.
And if you really think that comparing a five year old film to two that are 28 and 67 years old is valid… er, fair enough. I suppose they are all past the official three-year cutoff :-|
Perhaps YOU should use some common sense and look over the thread fully before commenting, instead of trying to be smart and just succeeding in making yourself look foolish.
Oldboy is one of my favorite movies of all time. I’m also a fan of Spielberg, one of my favorite directors of all time.
I’m not a big fan of remakes, especially those of asian movies, it just doesn’t appeal to me when i do the comparison. The one asian film remade in hollywood i felt was going to be good was The Departed. And hey, that wasn’t such a bad movie.
And like the departed I feel good about this. I trust that Spielberg can do the movie justice and make it new. Although I’m not the biggest Will Smith fan, I still think he can do a good job, but I think he should play the villain role. A lot of people would probably disagree with me but it something very different from his other roles and I think he can actually pull it off. I’m still hoping that they get Gary Oldman for the lead though.
This will not end well. Especially if Akiva Goldsman –Will Smith’s personal re-writer — gets to work on the script.
I also don’t see the Fresh Prince going for any of that incest stuff. It’ll be the epitome of a PG-13 movie — lots of gunplay, but little impact.
Spielberg has not seen “Oldboy,” and he is going to do a remake! Take the time to do a little research before taking on a project…ridiculous.
Oldboy sucked, so I can’t wait to see a proper remake.
Not to start a vendeta with you FunkyMunkey :)
Well neither did I, I never reveal spoiler, but it still stands that this is what happens when the movie in question is older than 2-3 years, most people will asume, hey if he/she has not seeen the movie yet, meh…
Let’s just start talking about it.
It’s just how things go, and I am lambasting people who enter threads about movies that have been out for some time, and expecting a spoiler free enviroment.
I learned this the hard way.
Once in the ye old days of 1999 when the Phantom Meneace came out, the big blockbusters didn’t have world wide simultaneous releases, I had to wait 3 months to see it after it came out in the US.
I got to know the fate of Qui-Gon and Darth Maul in that time totaly by accident.
I don’t even read reviews, sometimes I skimm them, but it seems to me that most reviewers can’t write a spoiler free review…
Mostly I just look at their scores, and read the review after I have seen the movie.
My point is …..
Spoilers tend to happen in threads about movies, especially old ones, and people are expected to show some precaution themselves, to defend them selves from getting the film spilled.
Or that’s is just my point of view.
Now please don’t spoil any films for me :)
Old boy? disgusting
No probs. I just hope that Doug doesn’t read this thread! :-D
I don’t get the love for Old Boy. It’s the weakest of the Vengeance trilogy and I’ve seen loads of better Korean films.
Also I’m loving the irony of people getting their tits in a knot because America is planning to remake it when Old Boy was by far the most “trying to be an American film” Korean film I’ve ever seen. The visual style was totally ripped off from Fight Club and is in no way a Korean style.
I agree with Slushie Man
FinalJoe… some recommendations purlease?
Try Chang-dong Lee films like Oasis and Peppermint Candy.
Ji-woon Kim is awesome: A Tale of Two Sisters, The Foul King, The Quiet Family, A Bittersweet Life.
Ki-duk Kim is also fantastic but an acquired taste. See: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring, The Isle and Samaritan Girl
Save the Green Planet! is absolute bonkers. Deserves a cult following in the vain of Evil Dead 2 or Braindead
Gary Oldman would be the only person I want to see playing “Oldboy” that’s it. He can do this character justice. No one else will.
Thanks Joe
I haven’t seen Old Boy yet. I guess I should before the remake is done.
@Final Joe
Basically most of Asian is in some form or way having characteristics of Hollywood. After going through much censorship this countries look to thriving cinema at the time when the censorship was lifted, hence being influenced by American films.
Uproar has started because, Speilberg proved he has no drive anymore that has to blatantly clear by Indiana 4. After years of creating amazing films, he has been tainted by the business end of things. It’s time to get new blood in the system, maybe if he was producing it, that’s something totally different. Will Smith playing Oh Daesu is hilarious, there is no way he watched the whole thing and thought he could do it. He must have saw the drunk tank scene, heard there was a girl involved and thought Hancock 2.
Here’s the question I pose to you:
Why make a remake something knowing that it will not live up to the original?
if this comes state side it should be done by Cronenberg
or if not him then Robert Rodriguez or Quentin Tarantino or Neveldine and taylor or anyone who could bring the grit and ultra violence it needs. I was not a fan of the incest theme, i just didn’t buy it as a strong enough motivation for the villain, but that is just me. Everything else about it rocked. As far as Smith goes, he could do it, but i would rather have someone like Mickey Rourke who has the ability to create that sense of a damaged threat.
great movie! Second one i saw after “Friend” and then i decide i wanted to get more into Korean Cinema. I think it’s too grimy for Spielberg/ Smith though…
I can’t imagine Willy Smithereens having the “darkness” needed for the character
ALL HAIL MEGATRON!!!
To Hollywood big shots,
Please don’t do it. Hollywood has the incredible potential to destroy any adaptations from Asian movies. It is proven beyond any doubt that movies like Ring or Seven Samurais cannot be translated to a Western “boxed” film structure. Forget it keep on doing films like “Beverly Hills Chihuahuas” don’t mess with something that is eons away from your capacity.
To Frank Miller: Remember ROBOCOP 2.
To Zack Snyder: You wouldn’t change the endig of Hamlet, would you?
Oh whatever, finaljoe. I’ve seen plenty of Korean movies which use that particular visual style, which was not invented by freaking Fight Club.
It doesn’t even look that much like Fight Club anyway, I don’t know what you’re on about.
