The Host Set To Be Milked With Remake
We have sad news for fans of The Host. It appears the fan favorite will soon be getting the remake treatment. Surprise, surprise. We get the skinny from our friends at IESB:
“Universal Pictures and Gore Verbinski will remake the 2006 Bong Joon-ho-directed Korean thriller “The Host,” with commercials director Fredrik Bond making his feature helming debut and Mark Poirier (”Smart People”) to pen the script.
Story follows a town terrorized by a giant mutant squidlike creature hatched by toxins that flow into a nearby river from a military base. When the creature grabs a little girl, her dysfunctional family must band together to rescue her.
Here is another remake of a well received and beloved Korean horror film. I feel unfortunate for horror fans, espescially fans of asian cinema. The business of making these films into shitty Hollywood versions is unfortunate and peculiar.
I feel bad for even posting this news.
I’m sorry.

Don’t beat yourself up Doug! You are da man!
if you want, cheer people up people with news of a korean sequel to the original:

not really news at this stage but still ten times better than a remake
I feel raped…
I feel another Matthew Broderick travesty coming on
its ok doug…..i feel the exact same way….its a godamn muthafuckin shame….
This is a movie I actually got to see before it was remade in the US. Somehow, it seems soooooo much more painful to know that they are making a remake of this movie since I’ve actually seen the original already.
I guess it’s like reading a book before you go to see the movie. But if I see a movie first, and then go read the book…. it’s not that bad of an experience.
Seen it, and does not affect my life in one way or another that a remake is being made. And if you feel raped because a remake of a movie made two years ago is getting made, you may want to get some professional help or talk to a female that has been raped. Your perspective might change. The original was entertaining, but honestly… who cares if a remake is made? Life continues on whether it is made or not. Be happy! :D
Yeah here’s another story thats just CRYING to be remade…fucking idiots.
I am a huge fan of foreign films. But I understand that there is a pretty large market out there that does not. Should they be denied an entertaining story because they prefer not watching a foreign flick? Personally I do not think so, and do not find a problem with a remake being made so other audiences get the opportunity to see this story in action. Sure you might say “they should broaden their horizons then and watch the foreign movie”. If these people prefer not to watch foreign movies, then they should not be forced. I do not like to do things I prefer not to, but if it is presented in a way that I will enjoy it that I will be all for the experience. Anyway, like me, if you enjoy foreign films then stick with em, but if you do not then here ya go with an opportunity to experience the story this way.
Not a great idea. The Host is not as good as people make it out to be, the overall story is not that interesting, all its charms are from its quirky Koreanness. As an American movie it never would have been cut the same kind of slack to begin with.
why is the guy moron who directed the pirates of the carribean films creating another piece of shit
people always say asian films ripoff hollywood films but now that an asian film is considered to be better than a hollywood film that mean they have to have it for themselves.
“The Host” is a foreign film that’s already secured the North American audience. This makes about as much sense as remaking “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” or “Shaun of the Dead.”
@ Matt aka gigan300
What are you talking about? This is not the first, and will not be the last, Asian movie remade for an American audience. To name a few: Shutter, The Ring, The Departed, Dark Water, The Grudge… need I go on? And as far as all these movies, including a remake of the Host, you can not really classify them as ripoffs when money is exchanged for the rights to do said remake. A ripoff is more like making a movie that shares a /strong resemblance/ to something else without giving credit to the original when it was blatantly inspired by it. Kinda like plagiarism. If companies that made the movies did not want them remade, then they would not sell the rights off in the first place. Be mad at the companies that made them as well, or the companies that held the legal rights to it anyway.
This movie wasn’t really your normal horror movie. It wasnt even a horror movie, but a movie about family and a monster movie. American Companies have more money adn could make the monster look better than this one. Hopefully, they dont get a shitty ass director like michael bay.
Hated the original.
Will probably hate the remake.
Totally non-news.
I never saw the original so I can’t agree with anyone here.
Am I the only one who thought that overall the movie had a lot of potential but ultimately failed. It started off good but then became way to much of a bad comedy towards the end.
SPOILER AHEAD

o…lemme guess….the “giant mutant squidlike creature” in this remake is the KRAKEN from the pirates movie!
*Sigh* Hopefully, they’ll keep the family theme within the remake. Still awful news.
I didn’t like The Host… Am I the only one? It was pretty bland and made me want to die, or at least go and do something different.
Oh, I don’t think this will benefit from a U.S. version though… It can only be worse that the already bad that it was.
Come on people The Host had a lot of problems. I enjoyed it but I think the remake could end up being better. Go positivity!
To the guy calling gore verbinski a moron…i’m not defending the pirates films because honestly, I didnt like em either. What drew me to the theater to see the first (and only one I saw) pirates film was the fact that verbinski directed it. You’re forgetting he did the ring remake which was actually really well made and he managed to bring about his own style to it. Not to mention he also did The Weather Man which I thought was also really good too. I’m curious to see what he does with this and yes, I own The Host on DVD and love it. But instead of getting bent out of shape about remakes which really doesn’t do anything…try to just say fuck it and hope for the best. Who knows? maybe this guy will bring something new to the table and we will have a stylish re-imaging like Carpenter did with The Thing. Or Cronenberg did with The Fly, or maybe like Kaufman did with Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
This is one of those films that i just dont understand why its so popular. I wouldnt, by any means, say this was a bad film… i just thought it was VERY slow, very overrated, and the story is fine, but just nothing that spectacular.
The reason for any hype over this film escapes me.
Although for big fans, it does suck that it will be bastardized by Hollywood and when MOST people think of this film, the sure-to-be-shitty American version will be what they think of…
One
From my understanding, Gore Verbinski isn’t directing. He’s producing/overseeing. So it don’t matter how good or bad the Pirates films were. It means nothing.
Two
Host was really good. It wasn’t really great. Why remake it though? It’s pointless.
Three
Just as long as Hollywood keeps the remake mitts of Shiri I’m good.
i seen the host and it sucked hardcore….the story sucked too.
how can u say the movie was good…it was horrible….cgi was crap…acting was so over the top only asian people could enjoy really inless the speak korean…and a lot of peoblems? ya like who the fuck dumbs waste down the sink like that? that was retarded come up with a bettter concept please.
WTF!
Somebody throw Universal into an abyss
The Host had many problems, yet these problems were overlooked by the audiance because it was a foreign film and many people enjoyed itfor eing different, a little bit out of the ordinary and not run of the mill.
You make this into a low budget hollywood DVD movie, you get something like Lake placid 2, the problems come to the surface and can’t be ignored because you watching your fellow country men act like crap, with a crap story and over the top yet really crap low bdget effects.
I doubt this will see the big screen.
The original was fun, something different with flaws that could be ignored, you replace the koreans with americans with the same story, you get the same straight to DVD excrement that is churned out everyday – why bother?
i’ ve heard the original being good, but i still havent seen it yet. the only thing ive seen were small little bits of the film and it looks really good. Are there any expections of movie remakes being any good?
I thought the Host was mediocre at best. The acting was terrible in my opinion. The special effects of the creature is was what kept me interested. Why does everyone get their panties in a bunch when someone wants to retell a story? If people think they shouldn’t retell, remake, etc…..then dont watch it.
I hope they remake Hairy Potter too, but with American actors instead. That would ROCK!
