Alliance of Women Film Journalists Special Mention Awards – I Love These

By John - December 16, 2008 - 02:49 America/Montreal

I was reading over at Hollywood Elsewhere earlier today and came across these great little annual awards. They’re called The Alliance of Women Film Journalists Special Mention Awards. Ok, I’ve never heard of them… but I find myself agreeing with almost all their picks in their very creative categories:

1) AWFJ Hall Of Shame Award to 27 Dresses

2) Actress Most in Need Of A New Agent: Kate Hudson

3) Movie You Wanted To Love But Just Couldn’t (Tie) — Mamma Mia! and The Women

4) Best Of The Fests — Hunger

5) Unforgettable Moment Award (tie between The Dark Knight (Joker’s first scene) and Slumdog Millionaire (young Jamal jumps into the poop….what?)

6) Best Depiction Of Nudity or Sexuality (tie between Elegy and The Reader)

7) Best Seduction — Vicky Cristina Barcelona

8) Sequel That Shouldn’t Have Been Made Award — tie between Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Saw V

9) The Remake That Shouldn’t Have Been Made Award — The Women

10) Cultural Crossover Award — Slumdog Millionaire

11) Bravest Performance Award — Mickey Rourke in The Wrester

12) Best Leap from Actress to Director Award — Helen Hunt, Then She Found Me

13) Most Egregious Age Difference Between Leading Man and Love Interest — The Wackness, Ben Kingsley and Mary-Kate Olsen.

I dig these.

Don’t agree with 8, Indiana Jones beats out Saw by a long way. Also… Ben Kingsley and Mary-Kate?!!

  2. Calviin says:

Tom,their not saying that Indy and Saw are equal to each other. They are saying that neither of them should have been made. The Saw series has been tired since the second film and to have made a fifth one at this point is incredibly disappointing. Coincidentally, “incredibly disappointing” is also what I would call Indy 4. Thus, a tie. The existence of both movies is equally incredibly disappointing.

I don’t agree that Indy 4 shouldn’t have been made, it just should have been made believable. But just because it sucked doesn’t mean it shouldn’t have been made, everyone wanted another indy, including you and you know who you are.

100% agree with the opening Joker scene in Batman. Those first minutes were the best part of the whole movie for me.

  4. “I don’t agree that Indy 4 shouldn’t have been made, it just should have been made believable”

Of all the criticisms regarding Indy 4, there are some of them I agree with…but not this one. Should it have been a better story? Yes. (and there may have been one-ask Frank Darabont!) But I can’t fault Indy 4 for the above comment. Yes, Jones escaping a nuclear blast via a rusty fridge may not be believable- but is it any more believable than the popcorn action seen in previous Indy Jones films?

    *****

As for the list itself, I find myself agreeing with most of it (most meaning=the pix I have seen) *except* for that first one. I found 27 Dresses (for the most part) charming and funny.

As for as unforgettable moments concerning the Joker…I disagree with that too. The true moment involves the darned magic pencil.
I haven’t seen Slumdog yet, but I suppose, yes, that’s an unforgettable moment from the sound of it.

    And Kate Hudson?
Fool’s Gold. Best reason to find a new agent.

I’ll agree with that Slumdog moment! I saw the film this weekend and that part got an audible reaction out of me.
