They Live Remake
One of the ultimate “hell yeah let’s kick some ass” movies I ever watched as a young kid was the legendary Rowdy Roddy Piper in “They Live“. That movie had not only one of the very best macho fight scenes in film history… it also had some incredible one liners that could only come forth from the mouth of the Rowdy one himself.
The idea of the movie is a simple one. Aliens are controling humanity and walk among us in disguise. Through fate, Piper comes across a special set of glasses that allows him to see the Aliens as they truly are… so he can tell who is an alien and who isn’t. Then the ass kicking begins!
Well… it appears that Universal is keen on remaking They Live. According to The folks over at Movieweb the studio is already putting things in motion. As of right now there is no writer or director attached.
I’m all for remakes in general… but man I don’t know. This is one of those times where the remake is going to have a hard time feeling right if the old lead guy isn’t there. A “They Live” movie without Rowdy Roddy Piper???? Hard to imagine. Oh well… I’ll keep an open mind and see how things develop.

ya man i fricken loved this in the days….i always remembered those eyes the chick had….right thru ya man there so cold….and the alien bangin the chick at the end haha hid face all chewed up.
idk.
theres plenty more they could do with it.
the more urgent question is:
will they include the bubble gum line?
damn remakes again, another example of hollywood raping the original films we love so much, but maybe it will be good hell The Thing and The Fly remake were good maybe this will be too.
@leeloo, they have to include the bubble gum line kind of like the way they always include in the bond films, “shaken, not stirred”.
the question is, is roddy piper replaceable? :)
speaking of remakes, it’s been almost 10 years since the matrix came out and to think that in another 10 years hollywood might even think about remaking that. who can replace keanu????
“I’m all for remakes in general”
christ, john.
Speaking of remakes, I hear they are going to make Romancing the Stone again. I’m normally not opposed to remakes, but I guess I’m finally old enough to say “why mess with the original”. It just doesn’t seem like the Karate Kid or Romancing the Stone (both 1984) are outdated enough to justify a do-over. But I suppose that just shows how old I’m getting. I should prepare myself for more 80’s exploits.
This was a classic B Movie, and I just cannot see them making it in the same way now. It would have to be approached with a very tongue in cheek style, otherwise it will probably be another example of a huge budget thrown at fancy effects. In short, please don’t do it unless you have a superb director!
I’m not so sure about this. After all, the first film was more along satire – which is what helped make the film a cult hit. We have a Democrat about to be sworn in, so that angle would be of little use.
The only (loose) possibility is that the zombie aliens are more vicious and deadly when discovered- instead of buying off those that surrender and/or discover them.
There’s really only one reason for the redo. Only one.
In Rod Piper’s place it is…John Cena?
The Keith David role goes to….Common?
Meg Foster and her deep blue eyes…well…now I’m stumped. Milla Jovovich? Hell if I know!
******
and yes, Leeloo. “I’m here to kick ass and chew bubble gum…and I’m all out of bubble gum” has to be in the redo if it happens.
WE also need an alley fight, and “Procreate” in the subliminal ads.
******
However, it might be interesting to see a sequel where, 20 some years later, we see how the aliens covered up the mess and got things back to “normal”, if they took more drastic measures, or vice versa and someone new stumbles on the subliminal suppression plot.
Yes this is a fav macho film. The fight scene is classic and has even been done in Family Guy.
“I came her to kick ass and chew bubble gum …” is one of the best cheesy lines ever. It would have to be there. In the Piper DVD from WWE, Piper does say that line was all him.
If they are going to remake this movie there is one thing they would have to change. our hero needs to change his clothes and take a shower. If its been a while since you’ve seen it, Piper’s character is a drifter and gets some pick up work in constuction. Clearly a manly job of hard labor.
He sleeps in a Hoover town type homless area under a bridge and never changes his clothes. The film clearly spans about 4 – 5 days and Piper still manages to hump the girl.
I always wondered what he must have smelt like while fighting aliens. Surprise attack must not have been part of the plan, you would smell those guys coming a mile away.
I’d rather see a sequel than a remake.
I’d rather see a sequel like Brian, a remake is just something that this movie does not need. I mean come on the fight scene in the alley just so the guy would put on the glasses…classic!
I loved Piper growing up saw him wrestle at numerous live events including wrestlemania 1 at madison square garden in NYC. I saw They Live 3 times in a theater. Really liked the film which was produced for just 3 million dollars. It looks great though. NO chance at sequel as Roddy has not kept himself in good shape. He’s put on a lot of weight and battled cancer( Hodgkins Lymphomia) in the last two years although I believe he’s cancer free now. He’s now 54 years old. By his own admission he was heavily on steroids during the filming of They Live so he would look in tip top shape which he did. While not a big fan of most remakes (Like the recently announced Arthur) Im interested in this one because it has a great concept.
chuck
they should get will smith to do it.
kidding!
TOBOR:
You kid, but don’t be surprised if his name get thrown around as a possible star, it does for everything else. This is the perfect movie for his trade marked “All Hell Na!” line. I can hear him saying it now after he see the first alien while wearing the glasses.
TOBOR:
Look at the TMB front page. Will’s already wearing the same sunglasses in the Hancock poster. SPOOOOKY….. Maybe Hancock 2 will be the They Live ramake. Hancock meets the secrets aliens….. You heard it hear first people!!!!
I remeber seeing the first one of these and thinking it was not the best in the world!!!!
Normally I hate remakes. Hate them. Despise them. Wish painful humiliating death upon their perpetrators. You get the idea- but this one could be an exception. Here’s why:
- The original was a B-movie- with B grade dialogue, B grade makeup, and some B grade acting. (still a cult classic, and one that I still torture my friends with, but a B movie nonetheless)
-For all its good points (The bubblegum line, the greatest fight scene of all time, my neocon friends all hate the obvious comparisons to the Bush Administration) there was some bad stuff too: I didn’t like the way Meg Foster’s character was written- nor did I buy how easily easily Roddy Piper’s character trusts her- For that matter, his character isn’t that well written either. But the worst was the recycled Ghostbusters prop. (You know which one)
I think there’s enough room for improvement in the original that there is a slim chance of them not ruining this one.
btw the fight scene wasnt family guy it was south park where the cripple kid fights i think…man if u can get the youtube of it that would be great….the fight is exactly in step with the movie fight…check it out.
2010 could be the year for this movie.
