300 Sequel?

300

Well, I suppose we should have seen this coming. 300 we be the next film to enter the sequel factory, we get wind of this peculiar news from our friends at comics2film:

Reporting from the 34th Annual Saturn Awards, Collider.com talked to Mark Canton, Gianni Nunnari and Bernie Goldmann, the producers of ‘300’.

“We’re looking for another ‘300’ and we’re looking for Frank Miller and Zack [Snyder] to do thier thing. We’ve had obviously, around the world, such an amazing journey,” Canton said. “It keeps on going.”

I loved 300 and am disappointed by this news. The story was a one off and should be left as such. I am all for the same crew making more Spartan films and/or sword and sandal pictures, but there is no need to have the film associated with 300 in any way shape or form. Few things in life bother me more than sequels that should not be.

The only way this sequel will interest me is if the 300 Spartans end up fighting their way out of hell. If they beat the devil in combat, I could stomach the follow up.

International friends – what are your thoughts? Would you care to see a 300 sequel?

  1. to add to the guy above, me… youre right, i was just going to say that exact thing! they could keep with the same theme too as far as battle strategy, because Themistocles used the tactics in water that Leonidas used on land.

  2. Why not the story of the graet sea battle that held the Pursians at bey while the 300 did there duty. This battle fought by Thomisticles was said to be as great as theres was.

  3. I SAY MAKE THE SEQUAL!!!! “The battle of Plataea” how Xerxes was defeated by unified greece. And “The battle of Salamis” unified greek navy defeats the vastly more powerful persian navy, leading to the battle of plataea and victory of tiny greece over mighty persia. Without this victory at salamis western civilization would not be anything like we know it now.

It’s a matter of time until the story comes out on film I say make it now!

“There’s a lot of Greek influences in our lives today, from democracy to architecture. If not for that battle, we’d be speaking Persian right now in tents with goat lords and wild orgies:)”

-To me, that sounds like the perfect alternate lifestyle! All hail wild orgies and GOAT LORDS!

  5. I would LOVE to see them show the subsequent battles against the Persians. I just finished a History of Technology class over summer and we were talking about the Battle of Salamis, a nautical battle pitting the Greeks against the Persians shortly after the events dramatized in 300. It’s said that this battle is the most important battle in human history, since the Greek victory allowed Greece to flourish. There’s a lot of Greek influences in our lives today, from democracy to architecture. If not for that battle, we’d be speaking Persian right now in tents with goat lords and wild orgies:) I’d really like to see that battle put onscreen.

  6. He’s not talking about a sequel to 300. He’s talking about another movie that rivals 300 in style/story/scope. A sequel to 300 would make absolutely no sense. Another battle historical battle/comic book battle movie is what he’s talking about.

  7. I’m watching the Ep of South Park right now where the Persians are taking over the lesbo bar. Mr Garrison kicking the Persian in the balls in slow motion is priceless, and then vomiting is priceless.

  8. I’m all for it if it has another moonlit, slow-mo boob jiggle/humpin positions montage like last time.

    Gaaaaaaa-jiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiggaaaaaaaaaaaaa-jiiiiiiiiiiiiggaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

  9. It does say that Frank Miller is suppose to write it. Or did I read that wrong? This opens some possible windows of interest for me:

    01. Does that mean that Frank would make another Graphic Novel about a different part of the war or of something before or after? Because I would be on board for that.

    02. Does Frank have the time to really do any of this? I mean he is already doing “The Spirit”… wants to do “The Spirit 2” (already)… was supposed to be doing “Sin City 2 – 3” (will this ever happen)… is way behind on his current run of writing “All Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder” (way behind schedule)… what else can he possibly try to bite off… the man’s mouth is full already. (let’s try to stick to one thing at a time Frank, I love you… but I’m losing patience)

    03. Is Zack Snyder going to have the time for this either?

@PMAN67 it wouldn’t be so expensive to make a 300 style sea battle movie. Ships on a Green Screen Stage, just add visual FX.

  10. The Battle of Salamis would be super cool, but movies based on sea battles are very, very expensive to make. I wonder if they’re willing to put the money into making it.

    I smell prequel.

300 II: Leonidas the early years

  11. I quite enjoyed the first movie, but a sequel is absolutely unnecessary. I would only vaguely consider watching it if Xerxes was to attempt having 300 piercings inserted into his genitals, and something tells me this isn’t going to happen.
This should serve as a stand alone movie only and not be tainted by the ‘sequel curse’.

  12. From what I read, it sounds much more like a Prequel than a Sequel. It mentions that it will tell a tale from earlier in the Story Arc does it not?

  13. I have a friend who is an MA in archeology. He told me that a ‘sequel’ in historical context would be cool. He pointed out that though it is totally unrelated to the events seen in ‘300’, a while later in history Sparta and their allies Athens had it out big time.

    Greek civil war.

That could make for a kick ass film.

  14. maybe i’m in the minority, but i read it as they said “they want another 300 type film. not a sequel to 300

but if they do another 300 thats such a BAAAD idea…you kinda figured that the spartans won in the end, so whats the point?

  15. Hmm. Reading the quote above, is it possible that they were referring to creating another movie with Miller and Znyder that had the same power and magic as 300… but not necessarily a sequel?

  16. This notion had been talked about before, only now is it picking up extra steam.

Doug–it only “seems” impossible to make a sequel to 300. There are at least four possible storylines that can be done, or a mix of the four. Here they are, starting with the two most popular among us internet folk, with my personal choice bolded:

    1) It is focused on the Persian point of view and how the Persians see the 300 Spartans.

    2) The film is called 30,000 Which is the estimate given in the first film of how many Greeks are under a Spartan army command under Dilios as they engage the Persians in the Battle of Plataea.

    3) The Battle of Salamis Where Themistocles and the Athenian navy defeated the Persians. Note that since historically, Xerxes was witness to his own brother dying in the battle at sea, we can at least have one character from the previous film return; also The Immortals could be used again.

    4) A prequel, as hinted by producer Mark Canton. This could be anything from the days before Leonidas became King, or the Battle of Marathon /First Persian War.

  17. 300 was such a raving success because it was a complete story AND it had never been done quite like that before.

301 or whatever they call it will be telling a story we don’t need to hear and its already been done.

    Highlander Syndrome.

  18. I agree that the story is a one off, and doesn’t at all encourage a sequel. I will hold off on judging if such a movie would be good or bad, especially if the producers are able to round up the talent they want. There a large number of sub-themes in 300 that could be explored, that could theoretically be nurtured into another film, it would just take an imaginitive approach by those involved.
