It’s Official – Chris Weitz IS Directing Twilight 2

It was a bit surprising to hear that Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke would not be returning to helm Twilight 2 (also known as “New Moon”). Yes the movie got mixed reviews… but it also made dump trucks of money. However, she’s gone.

Last week we talked about how “Golden Compass” and “About A Boy” director Chris Weitz was being talked to about taking over. Apparently it’s now become official. Deadline Hollywood gives us this open letter that the new director is publicly putting to all the fans:

I’ve mentioned before that I think Weitz is a capable director and this could be a pretty good move.

Some people are complaining that a male director can’t properly do a “chick flick”. Really??? Maybe you haven’t hear of a little film called “The Notebook” which was directed by Nick Cassavetes, whom I last heard had a penis.

  1. I do not know any other way to let Chris Weitz or anyone else know about a great idea for “New Moon”. I’m not a fan of Britney Spears, but her song “Unusua You” portrays Edward and Bella perfectly and it should be apart of “New Moon”.

  2. I think he’s capable and I’ve warmed up to the idea of him as the new director. However, this letter to the fans as well as Stephanie’s personal message to the fans makes me wanna puke.
Twilight might have been successful financially, but I think the fan hype had some adverse influence on the movie, i.e. keeping dialogue in the movie that while are fan favorite lines did not translate well into a film and should have been cut/changed. Hardwicke allowed the fangirl in her to allow those lines to remain.
My one hope for New Moon is that Chris will create a movie in the spirit of the book and sacrifices lines/scenes that do not translate to film or at least tries his damndest to make them work.

  3. Looks like Meyer and the Twilight director didn’t quite see eye to eye and that’s why Weitz was brought in. Looks to me like a good move, but what do I know?
