Michael Rymer Confirmed on Witchblade

Looks like Battlestar Galactica director and producer, Michael Rymer is lining himself up to bring Witchblade to the big screen. And why not? Every other superhero book seems to be making the jump.

Coming Soon brings us news confirming a story broke by BloodyDisgustinglast month.

Michael Rymer will direct and co-produce Witchblade, a feature film adaptation of the Top Cow comic.

The fantasy involves a jewel-encrusted gauntlet that bestows extraordinary powers upon the possessor, one chosen female from each generation.

Witchblade owes a lot of its success to its scantilly clad heroine of the comic book. I dare to think that a feature film would do well to remember this. Personally I think a movie based entirely on an armour covered appendage suit on a naked woman might make for a great Heavy Metal Magazine pinup, the story behind it has to be a lot meatier before I buy in.

As an avid comic collector, I find myself turning my nose up at these types of characters. Every cover of Witchblade was just another pinup of the naked woman in demon armour. At the shop I frequent, we used to call that fanwank. Even the TV Series managed to fail while putting clothes on the star. Mind you that might have only been part of its failings. I saw a handful of episodes and nothing drew me in.

So a feature film based on a fluff pinup comic with a Battlestar Galactica director? Can it work?

Guess we will have to wait to see more.

  1. I’m a huge fan of this book and hope Rymer can pull off the movie adaptation successfully. I have every issue and met Michael Turner last summer in Toronto at FanExpo and he signed some issues for me. The book is getting stronger every month with a great new team, fantastic art, an intriguing storyline and a second wielder off the blade. For the movie to succeed, it needs to heed the mythology of the blade (and not re-invent it’s origins), it should have a strong no-nonsense female lead who needs to be a stunning brunette but who can also play a convincing detective. Angelina Joli is too identifiable now with other projects (I.e. Tomb Raider & Wanted) for her to work now but she would have been great in the role 10 years agao. The lead should be in her early thirties (you don’t make detective right out of school) and possibly an unknown. As for the supporting actors, the TV show from 2001 had perfectly cast Danny & Jake in my opinion and if they’re to be in the movie, I’d say sign those actors up up for a repeat performance. I wasn’t a Yancy Butler fan and I didn’t think Nottingham or Irons were what Turner had originally envisioned. I picture Sara to be built more like Milla Jovovich or Charlize Theron. Irons needed to be older and sterner and Nottingham should be bigger, good-looking and alot more menacing. As for the armour itself, with a big budget, they should be more like Spawn’s suit, digitally spreading out across her body rather than just the gauntlet that was featured on the TV series. Hopefully we won’t see that dreadful full suit of armour that was also on the show. The trick will be how sexy to make the armour without it becoming exploitive. I think it can be done tastefully to everyone’s satisfaction. Here’s hoping!

  2. …….witch blade has a super vast universe do to the fact that they pretty much made a crossover with her and like every other comic book hero from all angles…..she even kills predator..i mean thats cool…any ways comic book fans can find better art for porn…this book just is good and its fans loved it…i really dont think it will make a good movie do to the fact that producers pimp out the right directors to make crap films like ….80% of all video game…comic book movies etx

  3. Actually if you ever read Witchblade it was pretty good, as well as the Darkness. The Art of Michael Turner (who was the co-creator of Witchblade) was simply beautiful. He passed away a couple of weeks ago at the age of 37 due to cancer. May he Rest In Peace and hopefully they can honor his memory with a good movie.

  4. OK, as good as a job as Rymer has done w/the BSG episodes he has directed one has to remember that he was also the director of the giant turd that was QUEEN OF THE DAMNED.

So, uh, WITCHBLADE? No thank you.

    Rymer should stick to TV.
