Punisher War Zone PG-13?

Looks like after Dark Knight managed to be all scary and dangerous with a PG13, Lionsgate wants to broaden the boxoffice line with a lower hight restriction. Word is that the fight is on over a PG13 Punisher War Zone.

Latino Review says:

the big fight over the Punisher project is Lionsgate wants a PG-13 cut to be released.

Of course, Lionsgate can always say, “This was never intended to be PG-13. We always had an R rating in mind.” but I trust Hollywood as far as I can throw it. I’m sure there’s some Lionsgate exec thinking this film can do what The Dark Knight has done with a PG-13 rating.

I actually think this is a bad idea. They want a PG13 cut so that they don’t limit their audience to the half with less expendable income. It makes sense. Marvel Studios knows this better than anyone and it is a strong factor in their pledge to never release a rated R film.

On the other hand I don’t know how effective a movie about a “hero” who is just as bad as the badguys (just better motives to commit the same crimes) is supposed to escape an R rating when you tie all those adult themes in with more firearms and violence than most adults don’t subject themselves to.

If they can magically shred the movie and remove any content that would be inappropriate while still maintaining the spirit and message of the film (which I think is pretty weak anyways) then I say “go for it”

I just don’t think they can. Not saying it CANT be done, but once a movie is a rated R its really hard to make it less without taking stuff out. If the goal was to make a PG13 from the begining they could have made it as dark and foreboding as they wanted (Dark Knight did) and still maintain a PG13.

  1. Honestly think Thomas Jane was abit of a “pretty boy” to play the punisher.
And well after watching the super gory trailer where Ray Stevenson looks like a badass I’d have to watch this movie. Never seen movies with him before but well assume he can pull it off, as we’ve seen alotta uknown actors make their breaks on actions movies like this. Regarding the pg13 theres not much to say other than: The punisher is about violence headsplitting actionscenes and the works, if they wanna tone it down they might aswell make a cartoon called: “The punishers detention week”. Still doubt theyd dare to make it pg13 after Sin City and all the Grindhouse movies have cashed in at top box office for extreme graphical violence.

  2. There could be two sides to this:

    1. It could end up being good. Everyone was against Die Hard 4.0 getting PG-13. But a lot of people ended up liking it.

    2. It’s doomed. The film getting a PG-13 might just ruin the fact that it’s a PUNISHER movie. Just like with Terminator 4. How the heck can they do that? Plus, the Punisher in the film looks like crap. Bring back Tom Jane.

  3. @moviegab
    thnx dud.
thats what i want..blood,blood, blood, jigsaw…as long as the movie is like that, im sold.

its not like batman or ironman who really get deep in character..its not much you can expect from in a punisher movie….im walking in expecting rambo and saw 2 combined times 3

if you think itll suck- then youre asking too much out of a film based on a character that isnt made to make great movies. its the punisher…not batman who was thinking and loking for clues half the movie and still had time to have a twist at he end. this will probably be a 90 minute bloodbath people.

  4. lol hazmat that clip rocks man, i’ve seen it 10 times :P
has for the PG-13 I hope it wont go there (like everyone else).
Hazmat’s clip was shown at comic con so I doubt its going to be PG-13, lol why show it if their going to edit the movie. Its a matter of patience to see what the MPAA will release.

  5. yeah but dude 99% of that trailer was shooting and blood. the fat chicks head EXPLODED and he stabs a guy with what looks like a spoon on the middle of his head…

you cant erase all those scenes.

i love how the new punisher looks. his hair isnt like janes..this ones got the italian look and at first i didnt like the skull but now i think its better (the target thing made sence rodney)

and although i think that hes not a hero and hes a murderer just like any other villain (he started out as a spiderman vilain “the reaper” ) i still like him because of all the cool shit like how he snapped the blonde girls neck at the begining of the trailer

  6. fuck!! i just watched that redband youtube trailer…..well damn screw that pg-13 rumor….that was sick, i think i have a lil bit more faith in this movie

  7. Haha, man this film is dooomed… And for once I believe everyone agrees on that.
I’m not buying the rumour. If they change it, then NO ONE will go see it. Plus they would have to edit alot of the gore away, even some full action scenes. And then the runtime would be less then an hour :)

  8. Ratings do change things, suppose some yahoo told John Woo that he had to make Hard Boiled at PG-13 so they could market it to teenagers. The story might still have been there and the basic choreography would probably be intact, but would it have been the same classic it is? I don’t think so. Most of the grit and brutality of the violence would have been erased and what would have been left would be an artificial compromised film, all so suits can make more money.

And there’s more difference between the ratings than blood, there’s a definate decrease in intensity, in quantity of violence, and in tone that has to be altered to achieve the rating. Look at Live Free or Die Hard, the brutality of the original films had to be left behind and the film had to rely on cartoonish stunts instead of combat.

  9. I don’t say “go for it” so that some faceless suits can make some money. I am all for it because I don’t think that a movie has to have gore swearing sex and graphic violence to still be an action flick.

People get shot in PG13 movies. They just dont show a gallon of blood painting the room in slow motion and then hold the frame on the dead body as the pool of blood oozes out of the wound. They just fall down.

Honestly, the ratings dont mean so much to me, but if you already made a movie that is rated R you will just butcher it trying to adjust the film to be PG13

  10. The Dark Knight is about a hero who refuses to kill and who fights using his fists, The Punisher is an anti-hero who murders people using realistic firearms, thinking that the violence in these films is comperable is the kind of retarted marketing comitee thinking that’s been ruining Hollywood films for years.

you say “go for it”? Why? Because you want a bunch of suits in Hollywood to make money? This is the kind of silly thinking that all this box-office tracking by the public brings, I don’t care how marketable a movie is, I just want a quality product if that means an NC-17 cut that three people will see, then so be it.

  11. That story never rang true to me. I believe THIS guy:

There is a rumor that has started circulating around this little thing called “the internet” that Lionsgate is pushing for the next installment of The Punisher to be rated PG-13. Given all we know of the franchise, this immediately smelled foul. Not being without charms and fully utilizing our ruggedly handsome looks, we tracked down our own source who is, of course, “close to the production.” Their word? *beep*

We could add some words in front of that, like “complete,” “total,” or “utter,” but it throws off the feng-shui of the post, but they would be appropriate. It looks like this originated over at Latino Review, who indicate that they have their own source. Now, I love those Latino Review guys, but I have no idea who they’re talking to. I do, however, definitely know our source and know that I trust them completely. Punisher: War Zone will be Rated R for Rambo-Levels of violence. Which is a good thing, because the kill count of Rambo (another Lionsgate release) was 236 and featured some of the best gore violence in years.

Now, while being Rated-R, the film is still facing a troubled production run, detailed by our Neil Miller at the end of last month. Who knows what else is going on in making the film “presentable,” though it probably has to do mostly with timing. While our source is more than enough for me, for you kids keeping count at home there are a few other things to keep in mind. First, former Marvel Entertainment CEO Avi Arad (and current Marvel producing partner) Avi Arad has always said that The Punisher was one character who would carry the R-Rating at Marvel (the other being Blade). Second, producer Gale Anne Hurd spoke at great length at Comic Con about the film and stressed the level of violence that would be in the film. Lastly, the exclusive footage shown at Comic Con, which was very well received, was definitely from a film that was Rated R, and it was the point they were selling – brutal.

In summation, this PG-13 rumor is total *beep* Punisher: War Zone is still not a ship sailing smoothly, but it will come to theaters with that Rated R stamp all over it on December 5. And just in case you need more evidence of the R-Ratedness, have a look at the clip below, which was launched a few weeks back at Comic-Con.

  12. fuck that shit….thomas jane was right for leaving this pos series..they are killing one of the greatest comic book characters of all time…the perfect non “super” hero………..little boy says “hey look its spiderman”

punisher says “fuck u spidey” punisher pulls out bazooka…..shoot …….. and scores,,,down goes the arachnid douche!

  13. ^ i agree…the punisher fuckin MURDERS people…..its not just a crappy pg-13 gunshot death….when the punisher kills a guy its supposed to be BAD…..the joker psychotic demenor and creepiness made the movie dark…..the punisher is a violent killer and the movie should represent that in all its rated R glory…

  14. We want to see shanks to the gullet and carrots to the face you know. TDK was dark without extreme violence because The Joker scared you with dialogue. The Punisher is just what he calls himself. While not an agent of chaos like the joker per se… he’s still a death dealer and should bring… bring it hard.. that’s just me. As with marvel. saying they don’t want to release an r rated movie. Maybe somebody should make a spoof with the joker talking to Marvel Exec. saying “if you want this movie to bring bank, you’ll have to break your one rule, make it r rated”. It could be done better, but would be funny nevertheless.

  15. Now a days i think that its just all about the dollars… They can get a bigger audience without an R rating and then get more sales for the DVD when the announce a “UNRATED” version “with scenes never before seen.” It all comes down to one thing, money..its bullshit but thats what it was all about. Look at Live Free Or Die Hard, it was shit without the cussing and Mclane droppin the word fuck constantly. It just wasnt him and i think the movie suffered because of all the editing that was done to hide all the f bombs. Then the unrated came out on DVD and it became a whole new movie. So it all just comes down to dollar signs in the eyes of the studio.

  16. It’s like a PG13 Robocop sir. Most people who love the first movie would say that it set the tone for how that character should be done and bloody violence is part of it. Taking that out of the equation just doesn’t work. Same thing with Punisher.
