RoboCop Remake is to be a Sequel

So some shocking news came out that they are not Remaking Robocop. They are CONTINUING Robocop. Yup! Turns out the big secret heads behind the remake of the 1987 classic Robocop are actually aiming to have this be a sequential story instead of a retelling. Another sequel.

Bloody Disgusting says:

Today we received word that MGM and Phoenix Pictures are close to pegging Darren Aronofsky to direct the latest “remake”, which we also discovered is actually a sequel! Here’s the logline: Present day Los Angeles, 20 years after the termination of the RoboCop program, the city decides to reinstate the program.

I like seeing a RoboCop: The Next Generation idea. The original was not much different than the premise behind the Six Million Dollar Man (which by todays standards would get you a robotic eye and a professional Baseball player) but it still stood out on its own.

But if this is a sequel, will we find out what Happened to Murphy 2 years later? My recollection of the Robocop sequels is rough, but if this is picking up 20 years later, are we going to see if they created a “decommissioning” robot form for Murphy to retire in? Will it be Murphy himself who comes out of retirement? Maybe even have Murphy show up to be the new aged and wiser RoboCheif of the new RoboCop squad?

I just hope this story doesn’t mirror Soldier where an old model thought outdated was replaced with new versions and is brought about to now defend them from their “better” creations.

But also, they will have Ed209’s that can walk down stairs. Alone or in pairs.

  1. no fucking way, robocop 3 was fucking horrendous cuz peter weller didn’t reprise his role. peter weller is a fucking legend, he made robocop. if he didnt, nobody would recognize him as robocop, and trust me, many people recognize him. it was funny, a while ago we watched a history show in class and he was the narrator, everyone in my class was like ROBOCOP!!!

  2. Why do you “need” him. Its not like he made the film. He did his part, but it would have been the same with just about any actor really.

Anyone can wear the suit. and for the better part of the movie all you saw was his lips anyways.

Anyone can be cast as Robocop. However I would like to see the original character involved somehow. But the actor is replaceable.

  3. This is GREAT news. If you watch the original, it still stands up really well by todays standards. (even the effects… about the only thing really dated is just a little 80s fashion) No need to remake it just so that a few things can seem a little bit more futuristic.

I heard ages ago that Paul Verhoeven wanted to do a sequel, set years after the first film where Robo is bought back online. I was devastated to hear we were getting another stupid remake instead… now it looks like we may be getting the original idea for the sequel after all!

The beauty with something like this, being set so many years after the original, is that it can allow the crappy sequels and TV shows to all still exist as cannon, but not necessarily have to refer back to them at all. Nothing has to be overwritten or started from scratch.

  4. good idea. I don’t think they have to redo the entire first film, nor will they lose any of the references by continuing the story.

The whole idea of outdated technology (Robocop) fighting a new robot (the drug-addicted thing in the sequel) has already been done, so I doubt that is going to be the case.

  5. @ JoJo,
Weller is indeed a history professor teacher, but he does still take on a supporting acting role now and then.

In any case, RoboCop/Murphy has been since recast at least three times (R3, the series, MS Prime Directives) so it would not surprise me if the part was recast yet again.

I do like the idea of having a “new” Robo” program and the idea of several ‘RoboCops’ (or new & improved ED 209’s?) …but I also hope there isn’t a message of ‘out with old model, in with the new’ and have RoboCop come back and take down the newer model.

    Why, you ask?
    Wasn’t that in RoboCop 2?

  6. Huge fan of the original series… one and two were solid but three ran out of gas (despite being filmed in my hometown of Atlanta)

Any word on whose playing Murphy? Peter Weller is a history professor now isn’t he?

  7. They need to make a mini-series about him right after he retired that shows Murphy in a wife-beater completely drunk off his ass most of the time and going to brothels using his robotic extremities. Then the film would pick up with Detroit PD finding him sleeping in a gutter

  8. i prefer having a remake.

i dont want them to continue now making us think that the 80’s robocop was the beginning- make a new one with a new start in which he turns into robocop and it will look better with the new technology

and yeah- thats a good point..i hope that the super advanced robots can walk down stairs lol

  9. i actually think this is a better idea than a remake. i’d love to see what happened next, instead of a re-imagined, higher tech copy of the original.
