Tron 2 Trailer Online – TR2N

I managed to find a video clip of the Tron2 Trailer (still struggling with the Tr2n thing) that wasn’t taken down by Disney yet.

This was sprung on an unsuspecting crowd and I honestly don’t know how they kept it a secret this long. It seems like everything announced at ComicCon we already knew something about, but this came right out of nowhere. You can tell the point at the fan reaction when they actually realize what it is they are watching.

Frankly I think it looks amazing. Some people were complaining about the “All in CGI” thing, but this is just made of awesome. Its appropriately updated without completely ignoring the original… shall we call it “source code”.

  1. Regarding Parker’s post about the light cycle game in “Tron”…Yeah, you literally have to be the first driver to run circles around your opponent. All you have to do is play the classic game to know this.

Light Cycle matches don’t last very long in the Tron Universe.

  2. I remember “Tron” more for the video game adaptation than the actual movie. The video game was awesome for it’s time, and it came out during the golden age of video games. The “Tron” video game is considered a classic.

“Tron” didn’t have that great of a story, but the visuals were so groundbreaking and beautiful…They are inspiring to this day.

I bet you anything that Tron 2 will be so much better than the original.

  3. as a guy who grew up watching Tron and Star Wars, i say the teaser looks very promising – but yes i am also concerned about Lisberger not being involved.

    End of Line

  4. Wow. I love the feel of this thing so far…
Why is CG always complained about? If you’re to young to remember Tron, then you’re probably to young to truly realize what crap we had to swallow off the screen and tell ourselves it looked good. I’m not talking about ILM or even anything that even still remotely holds up, but there were so many run of the mill movies, heck most would avoid effects shots, and if you’re not Spielberg, it isn’t more “artistic” to NOT see the monster, it’s just plain cheap. Sure, some movies could be cheap, and still deliver a whole world with only 5 or 6 Matte paintings, Colossus the Forbin Project did just that, with a smart script and it was brilliant. But, if Hulk looked too CG for your eyes, then you won’t be able to get past that the computer in Colossus computes with magnetic tape. I look at CG, and appreciate how far it’s come since Money for Nothing. A good chunk of Tron wasn’t even CG, but old fashioned hand animation, but it threw the bar up there for everyone to try to top.
As far as Lisberger, his movie was SOOO inspirational, this many years on, I’d could be happy if he’s not involved so long as TR2N’s made by some rabid fans who were inspired by the original work.

  5. The one thing I dont get..probably cause I havent seen tron, is that…if there is a wall that comes out the back of your bike, why not just drive in circles around the other guy??

  6. Darren, I have to agree with Mark Hamill’s performance in Slipstream (not a bad little film). I caught it years ago on the movie channel on a Sunday afternoon and I was embarrassed that when the credits rolled I saw Hamill’s name on it. I honestly didn’t even recognize him.

  7. Yes, NBAkid, the notion that Steve Lisberger isn’t involved (other than the arbitrary in name only “based on characters created by”) is something of a sore thumb, seeing how for many years, including the DVD SE a few years ago strongly supported it (Killer App teaser, Tron 2 pre-visual storyboards and art)- but I wouldn’t mind a return of Lisberger…on another movie. There were some high points for me on the slapstick comedy “Hot Pursuit” w/ John Cusack (and Ben Stiller), but there was also sci-fi pic “Slipstream” w/ Bill Paxton and Mark Hamill. Mark Hamill- who played a bad bass bounty hunter bad guy. (Don’t laugh, int’l friends, he *was* pretty good in that low budget film from the late 80’s; he had a Thor/mullet look going down…)

In any case, the big thing with TRON *was* the early CGI. As time goes by, yes, it does show age, but since the film was set in the 80’s, and the ‘puter universe “upgrades” at the end of the film, the CGI effects are aiding the story that much more. It thus would make perfect sense that twenty seven years later, that would has been rebooted (computer terms) an “x” amount of times…the landscape thus would change.

    ****
BTW, the original was actually too good for the effects at the time. When the studio thought the film should get a nomination for the groundbreaking effects in CG, it was shot down by the Oscar Academy who at the time, thought the filmmakers “cheated” using CGI FX.

The irony being that Tron paved the road for future CG films and animation companies, especially that of Pixar .

Given the notion that folks like Bruce are looking at a very small screen, it may indeed look unimpressive. Let’s also not forget the film may still yet be tweaked.

  8. There really wasn’t *that* much CGI in the original Tron. The only truly all CGI parts were the light-cycle scenes (and some others).

I have no problem with Tron 2 being all CGI worlds, I just want real actors in it. But that’s just me. Hey, this movie COULD rock, if it does, it’d make me happy.

What DOES concern me is Lisberger not being involved.

  9. Bruce, you clearly didn’t watch the trailer. No 14 year old I know could do THAT on a PC.

And there is a LOT more to a movie than just effects. If they wanted an effects movie with no talent behind storytelling or direction they could hire Neill Blomkamp.

  10. The majority of the original movie was CGI however all the actual actors were real people in cardboard costumes under black light superimposed into it.

So all in all I would say that half of the movie was CGI with real actors imposed. I think the issue is that the new film will be ENTIRELY CGI in the computer world.

But I think that’s not too big of a deal. Looks awesome to me.

  11. I dont get how this is exciting or impressive? wasn’t the old one good for its time because of its effects and been a good movie? Tron could be done by a 14 year old with any 3d software and a pc.

  12. People were complaining that TRON was all cgi? are you fucking kidding me? the first one was a special effects extravaganza! i would personaly be pissed if most of tron 2 weren’t cgi.

  13. I agree with Tigerclaw, the CGI is the soul of Tron and it’s about time a sequel for this came out! For me this is better than first hearing the news that new “Star Wars” films were coming out. I grew up a geek because of movies like Tron and with today’s technology it can only look and feel that much more awesome!

  14. About those complaining about the CGI, They don’t realize that Tron has always been about the CGI, Its a virtual world thats always been CGI like from the beginning.
