Wes Craven talks Scream4

Wes Craven has always been a go-to guy when it comes to horror. Usually he manages to make horror entertaining. Not just gore, not torture porn, not exploitation slasher. Those all bore me. But real scary entertaining stuff. Didn’t see Cursed or RedEye, and he has 25/8 coming up. So what’s next?

Scream 4? Say it isn’t so. Well Wes did say it. Or he didn’t.

MTV Movies says:

Clearly watching his words very carefully, Craven told MTV News, “There has been talk between Bob Weinstein and me about doing another ‘Scream.’” Pausing a moment and the master horror director smiled, “I don’t know whether that’s been made public so I’ll deny this. I never said it!” Sorry Wes, we have it on tape.

I really loved the first Scream movie. Wes Craven hit it out of the park with that one. And as good as he is I don’t know that he could have done much with Scream2 – wasn’t bad. But then there was Scream3 – Didn’t see that big reveal coming! Because you didn’t even get a clue. So out of left field.

As with most series, the bigger the number on the sequel, the less it made sense. I loved Neve Campbell in this, but then I adore her anyways. But honestly if they drag her into this story one more time she should be the killer. Pushed over the edge. Otherwise leave her alone. It would be really sad to see her running from Ghostface again and finally just say “Fuckit. Kill me. No wait, I will do it myself!”

They should have left her out of the sequels entirely.

So this is still in the “Hey Wes, we should do this thing” stage, so we will have to see what comes of it.

  1. I think they should see Neve running from the killer and find out in the end she had a break down and she really is the killer but she did’nt know it!!!!

  2. Scream3 was directed by Wes Craven, but even that couldn’t save it.

My problem with Scream 3 is that like the previous ones it keeps you on your toes wondering who the killer is, then in the big reveal it is a secondary uninvolved not hinted to unrevealed character that had no motives exposed, no hints nothing. Just ruined it all.

NO ONE could guess that he was the killer because unlike the red herrings dropped in the previous one, not one finger pointed at him. He didnt even have a motive until he told you about it in the end and even then it was a weak reason to suddenly go on a murderous rampage. Utter crap.

I agree that Scream4 needs to start a new batch of characters. They have exhausted the story lines of the existing cast. Maybe a cameo like Darren mentioned, but still all new people. New story. Its the only way this can avoid being tired.

  3. “Cursed” had loads of post production problems and it showed (and bad acting to boot), but Craven bounced back with “RedEye”. I liked “RedEye” a lot, and it is more of a thriller than it is horror, and while it is just under a hour and a half, it’s watchable due to the actors (Cillian Murphy, Rachel McAdams and a slimmed down Brian Cox). Which one the int’l friends should see if they haven’t yet? “RedEye”.

I actually liked the non-Craven helmed Scream 3. I thought it was a lot better than the previous film. I actually wished it *was* the previous film.

Scream 4 talk has been surfacing lately, and if it should happen, I’m sorry. I have to throw down a gauntlet here. It’s not that I don’t think there should be one. I wouldn’t mind another one. I just don’t want Neve Campbell in it. I’d accept David Arquette and or Courtney Cox in cameos, (or another pre-recorded message from Seth Green) but other than that, a whole new cast for Scream 4.

    Why, you ask?
Because it’s Scream 4. And by the time horror sequels reach part 4, the majority of actors from previous films have moved on, and thus the characters are no longer around. Some characters have died to unrelated circumstances. The only returning character is usually the killer. Thus, nobody from the previous films other than cameos.

    Sorry.

  4. I wouldnt mind seeing a Scream 4. I really enjoyed the 1st one and the second one was quite good aswell sure the 3rd was crap but if its done well as the closing chapter sorta thing i think it could be good.
