Half-Blood Prince gets a PG Rating

By Rodney - January 8, 2009 - 09:40 America/Montreal

The MPAA has put their foot down and has stamped its level of approval for the content of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The broad appeal of PG will grace the movie poster.

/Film says:

The last two Harry Potter films were rated PG-13, which makes sense because the books got darker as Harry and friends got older. In a move that has shocked some fans, Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince has been given a PG-Rating, for ‘For scary images, some violence, language and mild sensuality’.

The Harry Potter series has always grown in maturity with its fanbase. One of the things I really liked about the series since I was already an adult when I discovered it.

I do recall Half-Blood prince, and a fair bit of it dealt with discovering Voldemort’s past as a young Tom Riddle. And Harry gettin it on with the strawberry tart Weasly. I can see why this didn’t exactly rank high on the “kiddies have to sneak in” scale. The book was my favourite as it bridges the discovery of who the mysterious baddie really was and leads nicely into the finale. Not a lot of gore and sex here.

However, also in the article it also mentions the Watchmen spin-off animated movie Tales of the Black Freighter has already been given an R-Rating which is not surprising since the book within the book has such scenes as a man escaping a desert island on a raft made boyant by strapping the corpse remains to its underside.

Just sayin.

Rating doesn’t bother me, as long as the movie turns out good.

  2. Kevin says:

Guess that means there not gonna have the nose breaking scene in it.

  3. obi-wan kubrick says:

This is upsetting. Having read the books how can they leave out anything that would be rated PG-13 like say I dunno the last 1/4 of the movie.

  4. Shovels Popcorn says:

Spin off Tales of the Black Freighter? They’re just not f*sking around with this movie are they?

    Oh, Harry Potter thing. Ummm…cool.

  5. AARON says:

only PG, im not a fan but only PG??

  6. Mr. Chris says:

I wonder how they’re going to do the slashing spell. If I recall, that was a very bloody attack and would earn the movie a PG-13 rating in my mind.

  7. Matt says:

i dont like this move,b/c the films seem to be getting darker in tone and wouldnt turn out so well w/ a PG rating

  8. Ed P. says:

It will be interesting to see how this is pulled of. I was thinking this film would be in between PG-13/R. That said, my kids are big fans and a PG rating gives me the 100% green light to take them to the movie.

I’m still surprised that TDK was given a PG-13 rating…so maybe the bar has since been lowered a bit.

  9. Jay E says:

5/6 Star Wars movies, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Incredibles, Kung Fu Panda, Ghostbusters, and even Beetlejuice (which says “f***” and has comedic gore) are PG. The ratings board are incredibly inconsistent and some PG movies are credited as among the best in the world.

I am surprised by the rating, it really doesn’t mean one thing in the end. The movie could be crap, it could be good. It could contain death and fear but not actually show people dying in horrible ways (like aliens being sliced in half by a lightsaber).

no one pay attention to this
it will change 50 times before the release date
itll probably get to R at one point. ive learned my lesson…just wait for it to come out

  11. Bill says:

Yeah, but for those who know how this will end, how can that be PG? Not only is a graphic spell fight, but there is major death in this movie

  12. Rodney says:

People die all the time in PG movies.

And I dont recall there being any flesh wounds or spilling of entrails in said death at the end of the movie.

  13. Seth Rex says:

They probably toned it down a bit. Given that both parts of 7 are going to be hard hitting with it’s story/action.

  14. HAZMAT_loves_gwyn_paltrow says:

    RODNEY
actually a werewolf bites a guy in the neck and draco malfoys face gets sliced in the boys bathrooms leaving a pool of blood (its okay he lives)

    …and then theres the zombies…

  15. Slushie Man says:

All the movies have been PG in Canada, so I don’t see what the big deal is. The U.S. rating system is fucked anyway – NO consistency AT ALL. Doesn’t mean it’s going to be any less violent then the previous movies.

And Jesus H Christ, it’s a kid’s series. You guys are bitching becuase a kid series is PG? Give me a break…

    • Balboa says:

Slushie Man, Harry Potter is not a kid’s series. It is a fantasy series on par with The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It is just as deep, profound, and epic. Anyone who thinks this series is for kids obviously knows nothing about it and has never read the later books.

    • Rodney says:

Balboa, I am a big Harry Potter fan myself, but if you try to compare it to the epic world and works of JRR Tolkien you are going to find yourself the victim of some forbidden curses.

I have read the books, and it IS targeted at kids. Even JK Rowling herself said as much.

Its not that deep, barely profound and not all that epic.

  16. Yamo says:

I must say the pic at the top looks more then PG Harry Potter looks to happy behind Hermione.

  17. KRIS says:

THIS MOVIE IS GETTING A PG RATING FOR ONE REASON: IN ORDER TO CROSS THE 1 BILLION MARK. THE LAST HARRY POTTER MADE AROUND 938.5 MILLION DOLLARS WORLDWIDE WITH A PG 13. FROM A FINANCIAL PERSPECTIVE THIS IS AN INTELLIGENT MOVE. FROM A FILM PERSPECTIVE, I HOPE IT DOES NOT COMPROMISE THE STORY.

  18. exequiel says:

there will be sectumsempra, and the death of a character, but what’s that of mild sensuality? it’s the only thing i don’t get
