Casting for Thor is Still Open

A casting notice was thrown out not unlike a fisherman’s net into the sea of Hollywood that suggests that Thor has not been decided for Kenneth Branagh’s take on the Norse God of the Marvel Universe.

/Film shares:

Male MUST BE MID-LATE 20’S and SIX FEET OR TALLER. LEAD.

Physically powerful, very handsome, occasionally egotistical, petulant, and wild. A natural warrior with a quick charming wit who must be genuinely and severly humbled before becoming the compassionate, mature her of our film.

My greatest disappointment here (Aside from Kevin McKidd no longer qualifying) is that they are attempting to cast a mid to late 20s actor.

In Hollywood and TV, that age group more often than not seems to play highschool students. Granted Chris Reeve was 26 when he played Superman, and I believed him as an adult.

I like that they are going for someone with some height and “physically powerful”. Perhaps an unknown will rise from obscurity and nail the presence of Thor like no other. I was hoping for someone notable with acting chops that won’t let Thor fall to the background in the inevitable Avengers movie. This guy has to keep up with Robert Downey Jr and whoever they cast for Captain America. Thor sits in the front seat in the Avenger’s family car, so I really want someone with presence.

As long as they don’t give the role to a professional wrestler, I will manage to keep my calm.

  1. I personally think even though he is a little older than they wanted, Triple H is the perfect candidate for thor. I mean he has flowing blonde hair, he is huge, and he carries a sledge hammer, so yeah, think about it.

  2. I have 2 actors that would fit Thor’s boots. He may be to old, but WWE star HHH has the look, & the Rohan son from LOTR Karl Urban. I sure hope that whomever does casting has the best pick of us all, or it will be a flop.

  3. I didn’t meant that HHH is absolutely the guy for the part. I’m just saying he’s built for it and has the look and in my opinion has the ability to act. Yes Blade Trinity was horrid and he was horrid in it but it’s a blade movie. All thee of those movies were absolutely horribly done (the first one made me vomit the least) so I think it’s a little harsh to say he’s a terrible actor because he was in one terrible movie. I also agree that this has to be a joke becuase I think that hardly anyone is going to believe that someone in their 20’s is Thor.

    1. well the blade films were good to me aside from the third, but to assume that just b/c he was bad in that film isnt right b/c well everyone was bad in that film even wesley snipes, but of course that was his only film he was in.

  4. I’m pulling for Alexander Skarsgård. He might be too old for what they are looking for (32), but he can act, he is 6’4”, looks the part, and plays a 1000 year old Viking Vampire on the show True Blood. He is the son of Stellan Skarsgård, who is one of my favorite actors. Guy was great in that HBO mini series Generation Kill as well, when he played the lead character, Ice Man.

Look him up and tell me he isn’t perfect for the part of Thor.

    1. That picture looks old, he got beefed up for Generation Kill when he played a Force Recon Sgt., here is an out of focus pic(Only one I saw without a shirt on): http://www.screencaps.biz/genklg1.jpg

Bale did The Machinist before Batman Returns and weighed about the same as a starving guy.

Here is a pic from True Blood: http://www.trueblood-online.com/images/alexander.jpg

Lets put it this way. Where are you going to find a 6’4”, Scandinavian guy, with long blonde hair, who can act, and who has already played a Viking. Oh and add in that his father is one of the best actors on the planet, he can speak English without an accent, and he actively works in the US now.

I say hands down, he is the best candidate I can think of.

    2. My comment before this one is awaiting moderation because I posted links to pictures. Understandable, but I made a mistake in it and since it isn’t up yet, I now get to correct a non existent mistake. I combined two movie titles into one, when talking about the size Christian Bale was before the first Batman movie. I was going to talk about Superman Returns and Batman Begins, with how beef upped the stars got after they were cast. I ended up shortening it up, but might as well discuss both now. It wouldn’t be hard for someone with Alexander’s frame to get to movie screen Thor size.

Anyway, when someone lets the comment go through you will see a couple of pictures of Alexander and how big he is right now. In my opinion, he is the complete package for this particular movie only, but that is all discussed when my post goes through.

    3. “Where are you going to find a 6′4”, Scandinavian guy, with long blonde hair, who can act, and who has already played a Viking.”

      Try…

      Sweden
      Denmark
      Finland
      Norway

    4. I said who can act. You try over there and you are going to end up with a very limited amount of talent. In fact, the list is just as limited over here. How many actors 6’4” or taller even have shown the least bit of talent?

I also included other things that you left out. Including the ability to speak english like an American (Important for American box office). He is also actively working over here, so good luck importing someone on an American casting call.

Your idea to cast some unknown from Scandanavia obviously fell on deaf ears. Forgive me for pointing out someone who fits your criteria. Obviously you would rather go with someone unproven… I say watch Generation Kill, he was great in that. Then think about the fact that he fits the part perfect and that very few people do. You will end up with small people, wrong origins, people who can’t act, and so forth.

They obviously aren’t going in the direction of casting someone with a lot of known talent to play the role. That leaves it up to smaller guys. It is easy to sit in your high horse and just say go randomly pick someone off the streets to play this role. At least I actually found someone that is perfect for it. I look forward to hearing your choice.

By the way. I knew when I posted that thing about where can you find one, that someone would feel the need to come in and point out countries. If you read the whole post, I doubt you could find many people who fit it. You say the height. Many are gone. You say acting talent. Most are gone. Speaks American English well? There goes most of the few remaining. Has the look? Now you have a couple of people still standing there. Funny thing is, one of them is Alexander. He is from the right country, speaks American English without an accent, has the height, has the look, has muscle tacked on, and best of all he can act.

Believe me. If Thor never opened his mouth, I would have suggested some former wrestler or someone who specialized in this sort of stuff. Surely there is a 6’6”, muscled up version of Doug Jones somewhere. Remember, Thors actor has to hold up next to Edward Norton and Robert Downey Jr., and Don Cheadle so far, with more to come. You get some fool who can’t act and you are screwed.

If Thor was 6′ tall, they would have cast some Oscar worthy actor. They ran into a problem with the size. It doesn’t leave them many choices.

  5. I know this seems out there…but what about Tom Welling, hes really tall, and has good physique..all thats needed is the blonde wig….for people who dont know who tom welling is, hes clark kent on smallville….bad choice?

  6. Are they looking to put him in his 20’s so he can have personal problems 20 year olds have?

I don’t need to see Thor thinking about his relationship problems while fighting some bad guys.

    1. yes!
      great point

this better not be like…the whole get-the-girl drama or the whole “i dont want to be a superhero” thing
its been overused and its about time we get a superhero movie were the hero WANTS to be the hero and he TRULY kicks ass

thor is the perfect guy to make such a movie

    2. I also completely agree, Thor should be aged, war-hardened and ready and willing to kick ass. He knows he’s a warrior but has yet to really become a hero. I like the idea of Karl Urban or McKidd but i would especially like to see Pitt.

Also, he should be framed after either JMS’s run or Ultimates 1-2

  7. what!? that HAS to be made up

theres no way in hell that the actor that plays thor has to be in his 20s…thats fucking stupid

the guy can be PLAYING the role of a 27 year old but…if you make the actor in his 20s that takes out most of the actors we predicted to play him

    thats stupid.

RARELY (never, really) does an actor play the role of a character thats exactly his own age…people bitched that radcliffe was a year older then harry potter…okay…are you serious?! but i know, thats a completely different story

wow…robert downey jr is NOT in his 20s and thor has to be bigger and have an older expression on his face then tony….i can see cap being in his 20s though…but thor? no.

  8. I agree with Journeyman being a great choice.

I would think a top choice for them would be Brad Pitt, if he returned to Troy-physique.

I love Triple-H as a wrestler, but he was horrid in Blade, I think part of that was the character he was playing, but I really doubt Marvel is going to rest a possible franchise on a wrestler not named Dwayne Johnson (The Rock).

Channing Tatum is also a great choice, he is very similar to Heath Ledger in his early movie roles, so he could equally surprise people and actually be able to act. (Note: I am not saying Channing Tatum is in any way as talented as Heath Ledger, I am saying their early careers are similar in the types of characters they play)

I could also see Jensen Ackles (Dean from Supernatural), who is surprisingly 6′ 1″. He has all the qualities they listed, and they have all been shown in Supernatural.

    1. I was actually thinking Sam (Jared Padalecki) from Supernatural would do the trick. Dude is built, cut, tall (looks bout 6′ 3″). Either one would be interesting.

  9. i carnt see a thor film working it might end up like that fantastic four film in the late 90s that never came out or even worse howard the duck………….That did!!!!!!!!!!

  10. What’s wrong with the right professional wrestler playing Thor? Someone like HHH (Paul Levesque is his real name) who has the physique and has been in a couple of movies? He’s one of the best wrestlers ‘in character’ and a great performer so unless he’s just absolutely horrible at acting (he’s been amazing at giving promos and stays in character around 200 days a year so that counts for something right?) I don’t see why he shouldn’t at least be considered.

    1. Have you seen “Blade Trinity”? No, no no no no NO…. Wrestlers are a bad idea. Because they are forced to play melodramatic tough guys it all seems very forced. Check out The Rock in “The Scorpion King”. His bad acting was due to his previous wrestling carrier. Now that he’s kinda broken away from all of that. I think he’s become a decent actor. The roll of thor is definitely not something you want to piss away. If they did and the movie was horrible because the person who plays Thor is not believable. They’ll scrap it and find someone else to play thor in the Avengers movie.

    2. Well the “right” professional wrestler would have to be one that can act. That isn’t a lot of them.

Dwayne Johnson is one of the very few that I can say “can act” but he wisely doesn’t take challenging roles and I dont ever expect him to get an Oscar. He is the cream of the crop from wrestlers turned actors, and he isn’t anything special. He is just fun to watch in action films and is a charming guy. He really isn’t acting much.

Pro Wrestlers are not actors. Bit parts in movies, maybe action fall guys, or background characters… fine. But a lead? Sorry. I dont need to see a wrestler pretending to be an actor.

  11. I’m tempted to say Channing Tatum, but I…

no, seriously. I thought he was great in Stop-Loss, and the Step Up flicks did show some charisma. He might be good in Public Enemies this summer (and GI Joe)- so he’s a longshot, but so far, given the above description, he’s the only one for me that comes to mind.

I would prefer McKidd too, but …that’s my best guess.

  12. I wish they had the chops to pick Viggo Mortensen for this, but I guess it could be hard to distance Thor from Aragorn, which might be quite distracting.

However, continuing my Lord of the Rings thinking I would really like to see Karl Urban step up to the role, fine actor, can bring the menacing attitude (see Bourne Supremacy) somebody get this man’s agent on the job!

  13. “Male MUST BE MID-LATE 20′S and SIX FEET OR TALLER. LEAD”

    I’m 15, and 5’9, so guess I’m out.
Anyone got any ideas on who should play Thor? Personally, this movie seems interesting. Marvel Universe rocks
