New Dragonball Evolution Trailer Online

There is a new Dragonball Evolution Trailer online today, and I have to say it looks like the best one yet.

Oh sure, there will still be those drooling fanboys that are still bent that Bulma’s hair isn’t teal, or that Goku (the alien monkey boy) wasn’t an Asian, but the trailer looks good. They show off the characters as much as the effects, and dash it with some hip J-Pop soundtrack and we might have a winner here.

I think they did alright considering the original would have looked utterly ridiculous if they did a literal visual translation. Adapting this to film was certain to step on some fanboy toes (you can never please everyone), but in the end it looks like they will have a good action flick with some fantastic visuals, great fights, seriously cool special effects and still maintain the spirit of the story laid out in the children’s cartoon. This is an adaptation, not the next chapter.

It still could all tank, but if it does, it will be on its own failures, not because they didn’t make it exactly like the cartoon.

You can skip to the end and leave a response.

  1. Jason says:

Youre right if it tanks it will be on its own failures. Those failures being every new thing they made up for this movie rather than following a solid foundation of a franchise that still generates so much following and money over a decade after the series has been over.

    • Rodney says:

They are following the solid foundation of the franchise.

But if they did a literal translation of every last page and word do you HONESTLY think it would still look and feel as cool?

The dialogue in the cartoon is hokey and makes Batman and Robin look like Shakespeare. And if the characters acted like the cartoon they would look outright silly. The “badguys” are all named for vegetables for crying out loud. I suppose instead of flying cars and futuristic quads, you would sooner have them floating on little clouds?

The foundation is the same. The spirit of the show will be there, and the story will be told, just presented with real people in a real world.

You misunderstand when I said it would be on its own failures (acting, poor choreography etc) not the failures you accuse it of already having.

    • Grave says:

I have to agree with Jason on this. Much like the Chun-Li movie it seems from the trailer they made there own story (foundation) and kept what litte things from the previous cartoon saga to make some fans happy. Its true you can please everyone but its better to please the majority then have the majority not pleased. I also do agree with Rodney that if they did a literal translation its would have came off as cheesy to non-fans. Personally I feel the film makers just didnt take the franchise seriously. Not suprising since the anime is long and boring anyway.

    • riggs says:

@Rodney: i take it youre not a fan of the cartoon? because if you arent, then respectfully speaking of course, you need to sit down. this movie shouldve never been styled “realistic” theres no realism in the cartoon, theres a talking pig and cat!, it only uses concepts from the cartoon and rehashes them as if thats how it was originally.

i would defend the movie if it got AT LEAST one thing right, but i have yet to see from the trailers ANYTHING that is.

    • Gigan300 is back!!!!! says:

goku’s outfit is the same, so there is at least one thing.

      just sayin

    • Rodney says:

Well Riggs, the original followed a plot of collecting the Dragonballs so that they dont fall into the wrong hands, and it was an epic adventure of friends and lots of action with martial arts and effects heavy combat.

Sounds like they are doing just that.

      I don’t see the problem.

    • Dan says:

      A) This movie reminds me does not make justice for how long the die hard fans have been waiting for this movie to come out. I remember growing up and constantly seeing rumours fo a film being made which would end up being false or got shut down. Yes you don’t have to copy the whole script of the show but there are so many 3 or 4 part episodes or w.e that they could of turned into a film easy and still been able to keep krillin and trunks and so on.
      b) For the guy who said if batman was translated to film corectly it wouldnt be the same. you clearly are not a comic book fan and therefor should not use comic book references. pick up a frank miller batman comic book and you’ll realize why your comment is silly, the cartoon series was targeted for lil children and had to be kidish and goofy to fit there demographic, unlike the movies which are for the older comic book fans which were reading the good batman comics as a kid. anywhoo i’m starting to sound like christian bale so i’ll end with. This movie is most likely going to have some cool effects that you would want to see but it will not be considered a dragon ball movie in my eyes. just the foot in the door that will get me the true dragon ball movie.

  2. Slushie Man says:

Looks kick ass to me. I’ll be there opening night.

  3. Slushie Man says:

And Jason, the series just ended recently. GT has only been over for a couple years, so I have no idea where this ‘Been done with for over a decade’ thing is coming from.

  4. Jake says:

Rodney:”The dialogue in the cartoon is hokey and makes Batman and Robin look like Shakespeare.”

That is a massive overstatement. A naively massive overstatement, I hesitate to say.

However, the original Dragonball, though one of the best Japanese cartoons and mangas out there, IS pretty goofy. Personally, I wish someone would make a high-budget CG film based on the Dragonball Z series. THAT would be COOL. Especially if it was written by a good writer who knew how to overcome the series’ flaws but at the same time stay faithful to the show as a whole.

    • Rodney says:

Really? Because everything I have seen has had hokey ass “So Hotshot.. you want to fight me? Fight you, no I want to kill you” and “You might think you know everything there is to know about me but really you are not even close.”

Those screen gems really make the show worth my time.

I have watched the show, and caught clips online and this is the BEST dialogue they can come up with. I am glad someone WROTE this movie so it has a chance.

    • Jake says:

Well, you can’t expect a show translated from Japanese in the 70’s to have super-ingenius dialogue. Besides, those quotes are actually pretty good in comparison to what alot of American action-oriented cartoons come up with these days. Though there are exceptions.

I’d furthermore advise you to quit ragging on what is actually a pretty great show overall, and go into all the reasons why. But I’m not usually the type to go out of his way in order spoil someone else’s fun.

    • Jake says:

Actually, I guess I will say something else. Most all of the cheezy lines that give the show it’s bad name in the American version of Dragonball were completely rewritten here in America for the English dub. If you look up the stuff they say in the Japanese script and manga, it’s completely different. Funimation totally screwed with it, as they do with many of the shows they import.

Dragonball, especially the Japanese version, is a great ride. And though it’s sequel, Dragonball Z, is very flawed in parts, it features some very well done and sometimes intelligent character development, and is extremely influential when it comes to cartoons and even live-action fighting choreography. That part in The Matrix where The Smith is dodging Neo’s bullets is right out of the original Dragonball show. So you can say it’s a waste of your time if you want to, but so many people around the world think otherwise.

    • Rodney says:

And Jake, so many people around the world think the opposite of you too.

This movie is NOT the cartoon. It is an adaptation. Things were changed because they just didn’t work in the real world.

I would LOVE to see some subtitled or literally translated Dragonball that makes this dialogue anything but laughable, but I bet no one has that either.

    • Mike Mai says:

the english translation was fucking awful, blame the translators for making it hokey.

  5. RonSalon says:

i would totally watch this–maybe not at the movies, but certainly on dvd. Does anyone know the film’s budget?

  6. Gigan300 is back!!!!! says:

i still dont see how chow yun fat and ernie hudson were talked into doing this film, but i hope it turns out well as a former fan of dragonball.

  7. Mr. Chris says:

I’m super-hyped for this. This new trailer is exactly the kind of movie I imagined when they announced the film (well, not EXACTLY, but I consider things like the flying car to be a perk.)

Every year, there needs to be those select few over-the-top action movies that get my adrenaline going. And for me, this has officially joined the ranks of Transformers 2 and GI Joe.

    @RonSalon
The estimated budget is at $100M.

  8. Wilco says:

I know nothing of the Dragonball world but this film looks pretty awesome.

  9. HAZMAT says:

    lmfao

  10. AndyS says:

    Pure Trash

  11. MrCristal says:

Where can i download it in HD?

  12. AndyS says:

Why would you want to? This looks like a straight to DVD movie.

    • Rodney says:

Because AndyS, maybe you don’t get to decide what everyone else wants to watch.

I don’t see anything wrong with this, and clearly neither does this other person.

You can express your opinion, but don’t tell others they are not allowed to like this movie you choose to hate.

  13. AndyS says:

I never told anyone they aren’t allowed to like this movie. How is my asking someone why they would want to watch the trailer in HD equivalent to telling them they aren’t allowed to?

I never said I hated the movie. I simply have expressed my lack of respect for a movie that reminds me of the AVP franchise.

    • Gigan300 is back!!!!! says:

im curious, how does it remind you of avp, b/c it doesnt look anything like avp besides avp and avpr werent that bad to me anyway

    • Rodney says:

First off Andy, you didn’t post as a reply so I would have to assume you were commenting on the post, not the above commenter. You simply said “why would you want to” .. you did not imply at all that you were questioning their preference for an HD trailer.

Secondly, this trailer has NO similarities to the AVP franchise whatsoever, so I don’t see why you are trying to associate the two.

  14. MrCristal says:

I like to watch trailers in HD, that’s all..

    Anyone knows? Thanks…

  15. Rob D. says:

There is no reason to watch this movie since you wont know how the final fight ends until the 3rd or 4th movie anyway. It’s best to just wait till they are all out on DVD then watch em back to back.

In all seriousness. I wasn’t a fan of the Dragonball series but became a fan of the Z series and watched the GT series just to see how it ends. I prefer the animated movies over the show though. The show would drag a fight on for 4,5,6 episodes and yes the dialog was a bit hokie. The thing about the Japanese is they feel the need to explain things over and over and over again. Which can be annoying at times. From the trailer though the movie looks a little interesting and I’ll probably watch it on DVD. Not something I’d need to watch in the theater.

    • Gigan300 is back!!!!! says:

i kinda doubt it will get to 4 movie, it might conjur up a sequel but there wont be a 4 film maybe a third

    • Rodney says:

And you didn’t know if the Rebellion would truly defeat the Empire until the third movie came out either, but that didn’t stop people from going to see Star Wars.

Why would you NOT watch a movie just because you know there will be a sequel??

    • Rob D. says:

That was me at a bad attempt to make a joke about how the show would drag out its conclusion over multiple episodes.

    • Rodney says:

And that part I overlooked completely! lol

Yeah, like a lot of those “battle” shows they liked to drag out stuff over too many episodes.

Maybe they repeat the crap out of things because people were originally watching this week to week. Just a thought.

  16. Rob D. says:

Just wanted to say Great Job Rodney. You’ve single handedly kept the movie blog alive these passed couple days.

Where has John been? and we need to get Doug back on here.

    • Gigan300 is back!!!!! says:

john is filming his movie “the annivesary” (sorry to talk for you john), and doug has stated on his podcast on nowlive (that he doesnt do anymore either or at least anytime soon) and on nagical radio that he wont work for the movieblog ever again(sorry to speak for ya doug)

    • Rodney says:

      Thanks Rob. I appreciate it.

John has been very busy preparing and now filming his film “The Anniversary” and has asked me to step up my efforts here.

Doug is still a good friend but he has moved on to other ventures and pursuing his comedy. He is missed here at TMB, but we wont stop him from chasing down his dream.

    • 46and2 says:

      +1, Rodney. Respect.

  17. Kevin says:

Did the begining remind anyone else of Heroes? I never watched the show, so I could care less if it looks like the show or whatever, and I think it looks terrible.

    • Rodney says:

It doesn’t remind me of Heroes, but then i DO watch the show, so that might explain it.

Why would you compare it to something you have never seen? That’s like saying “I think that cake tastes like carrots… but I have never tasted a carrot”

      >??????

    • Kevin says:

When I was talking about not watching the show, I meant Dragonball. I watch heroes, haha.

  18. Mr. Chris says:

I really hope they do manage to get a second movie. It’d be shame if they went through all this exposition without ever being able to deliver the big epic story that comes next.

  19. Haymaker says:

    @RonSalon
    “It’s over 9000!!!!”

  20. Juan says:

Im a fan of the show. Its not faithful but its still worth a chance. Im willing to overlook many things as long as it still has the spirit of the show you know. Besides, the Z franchise is where its all at. Hope it ends up being good but i have serious doubts.

  21. Robin says:

As a former Dragonball Z fan, I have to say that I honestly have no problem with Bulma’s hair or Goku’s not being Asian. My problem is with their leaving out a certain vital character.

I mean, I just don’t see the point of leaving Krillin out. He was one of the most important characters on the show. And, unlike every other non-Goku character who they included in the movie, Krillin actually remained significant throughout the show.

    • Gigan300 is back!!!!! says:

holy shit i forgot all about krillin and as far a bulma is i think she looks fuckin hot

    • Rodney says:

Krillin was a comic relief character that served as supporting cast and not critical to the plot. He was not that significant and just lightened tense scenes since the show was targeted for kids.

Depending on fan reaction they might put him in, but doubtful they would include a minor character like him.

Also, not to nitpick, but this is based on the Dragonball story and not Z or GT, so other more predominate characters from those continuities obviously are not involved.

  22. duca says:

I have come to the conclusion that I’m simply going to forget everything I know about Dragonball. Because honestly, it’s just the cannon stuff that’s bugging me. The trailer looked like it could be quite a fun little action movie. Definitely looks like a “hanging out with a bunch of friends” kind of movie.

Lol Rodney, not all the villians in Dragonball were named after vegetables. There’s also Cell, Majin Boo, Brolly, Freiza, ummmm… yeah. Only the Saiyans at the VERY beginning of Dragonball Z had vegetable themed names. Don’t mean to nitpick but it bugs the hell out of me when you say that :P Also, just because something is animated doesn’t mean it’s targeted at children. Lol show a kid Gantz and see what happens ;)

  23. Mark says:

WHAT!!! DOES ANY BODY IN THIS CHAT SEE THAT THEY ARE CLEARLY BUTCHERING THIS!!!! First of all the cast sucks!!! Second of all, I COMPLETELY agree with Jason at the top. This movie will tank due to the fact that they are not treating it with the utter care and protection of the original story as much as they should. Yes, everyone knows that you cant pack a movie full of cheesy lines…that can be dealt with by any DESCENT writer out there, but as far as the battling and overall essence of DBZ….they COMPLETELY DROPPED the ball. I have been a loyal fan since way before DB even came to the US, so I out of most US fans can say that they have went in the complete opposite direction that they should’ve went. They needed to make it darker, with a little bit of comedy, not trying to throw in comedy with a little bit of action. The action is what makes DBZ and the cast they hired is not built for it…obviously except one or two people. But who they casted for GOKU makes or breaks the movie, and in this case, it’s definitely broken…I’m not racist in the slightest bit, but they needed to get an asian that ACTUALLY LOOKED like GOKU and sounded white, not actually WHITE!!!let alone the guy is not a fighter at all in real life, nor has he ever been. So tell me how they are gonna cast him in a movie about fighting and martial arts that THE WHOLE WORLD HAS BEEN WAITING WELL OVER A DECADE FOR!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

    • Rodney says:

      Mark.. Seriously EXHALE!

No one is saying you have to like this, but you are making it impossible to be enjoyable with your assumptions.

How do you know its not getting the care and attention? How do you know that they dropped the ball on the action scenes? How do you know this is the opposite of what would make the movie a success?

So you think you know better but all you can do is cry and call it crap. You think the world was waiting a decade for a cheesey hokey kids cartoon to become a summer blockbuster action flick?

Funny that you insist that they needed it to be darker with a little comedy when the original cartoon was more comic relief and combat scenes with martial artists flying around on little clouds.

I think you are too obsessed with the series to see that this is an adaptation. This is not the next chapter. Its a live action adaptation based on the cartoon and graphic novels.

Honestly, are you really that ignorant to insist that Goku has to be Asian? Goku doesn’t look Asian, and he doesn’t look white either. How many Asians do you know with a monkey tail that come from space? Goku’s casting as a non Asian just simply meant that they didnt have any monkey aliens handy to fill the role. Deal with it.

    • iluvmovies says:

I agree matt you need to clam down. Like you I’ve been waiting for this movie for a long time myself and I’m not really happy with the direction they’ve taken it in. I don’t really have a problem with the cast but instead all the cliché changes they’ve made to the story. That and given its development and production history I don’t think fox ever really cared how it turned out to begin with. But either way theres nothing we can do about it so why let it get you down. And Rodney dragonball was never intended to be a kids cartoon. When it was brought to america it was HEAVILY edited and marketed to kids because the company behind it believed that older audiences wouldn’t watch it because of a generalization at the time that Americans considered anything animated to be for children

  24. Mark says:

Oh yeah, and as far as the whole krillin thing goes…He does need to be included simply due to the fact that he is GOKU’s Best friend that has been there since get go. He doesn’t need a big part but they should definitely put him in there.

    • Rodney says:

He doesn’t NEED to be included. He was a background character that didnt matter at all to any of the plot. With or without him the movie will be the same.

  25. Mark says:

And Duca….im ashamed….I completely get where you are coming from that you should forget everything you know about it and it would be a cool hanging out movie…..BUT THAT’S JUST IT!!! For those of us that have been saying that they need to make a REAL movie for over a decade and HAVE BEEN WAITING SO SO SO SOOOOOOO LONG…..we shouldn’t be forced to forget everything that we’ve been waiting for just because the fat cats in Hollywood want to act like they know what they are doing with one of if not the longest running animation of all time.

    • Rodney says:

So enlighten us oh Dragonball knowitall… how should they have done this?

Get an Asian to be Goku? Make every charcter retardedly silly? Throw around hokey dialogue?

When is it ok to change something to make it suitable for a REAL life movie.

Those “fat cats” in Hollywood are the ones putting their money on the line and your precious Akira Toriyama has no issues with it, and its not the longest running animation of all time.

Facts are handy when you are ranting out of your ass.

    • Gigan300 is back!!!!! says:

damn mark just got pwned on all three comments.

    • duca says:

lol I may be a Dragonball fan but I never, EVER wanted it to be made into a movie. Why? Cause I new this was exactly what was going to happen. The story is just too damn long to be properly adapted. Most of the good parts of the series don’t happen until at least the Cell Sega. I mean, the Saiyan Sega is pure shit man. It’s what gives people a bad taste in their mouths about the whole series. Silly beginning story arc…

Ahem, anywho, almost all adaptations are like that. You gotta appreciate it for what it is, not what you want it to be. I mean, I ain’t got no crystal ball and it might still be shit but the new trailer looked a hell of a lot different then the other ones. It’s starting to look like a fun movie. Great Dragonball movie? Who knows, but a fun movie non the less.

However, if they screw up Akira I will be lived. That’s a completely different rant and for another time.

  26. Mark says:

And finally, this talk of making it relate to modern day, or that it’s just not practical to keep it close to the original look is bull….i understand that if you take a title anywhere close to this big and make it into a movie that everyone’s been waiting for then you are eventually going to step on somebody’s toes (most likely hardcore fans like me) but that doesn’t mean that you have to stray THAT far away from the original. They could’ve kept it a lot closer to the original look and a lot more familiar for the millions of hardcore fans out there. I will obviously go and watch it with pure hope in my heart that the movie will somehow COMPLETELY shut me down and prove me and JAKE wrong, but regrettfully I feel we are completely right. And when everyone else sees that on release day, let me be the first to say I told you so…..or hopefully the first to say I was wrong…..

    • Rodney says:

Why not make it relate to modern day. What was funny in the 80s when this series first aired just doesnt fly if you are over the age of 6 now.

If they want to make a feature film “that you have been waiting for” why not make it something worth watching??

Kept it closer? Like the flying clouds and retarded hokey over reacting characters.

Trust me, this is familiar enough. The fans know what it is and its only the drooling fanboys that are up in arms over this. People not so close to the series see the trailers and think it will at least be a decent action popcorn flick.

If I was to act like you are, I would view the original cartoon and ASSUME they are making that into a movie and claim it will be retarded. But instead I checked out the trailers and read the stories about what they are doing with this movie and it looks decent to me.

  27. TM says:

As a fanboy of DBZ, I think this movie is gonna be poor. At least this is what I’m getting from the trailer. Awful, left a bad taste in my mouth.

  28. JoseMP says:

I agree with Rodney when he says that a literal translation of the anime into a real live movie would look ridiculous. But I disagree about what Rodney says about the dialogue in the original anime series. Vegeta had some serious dialogue that were no childish at all.

Still, I think this movie will be a big hit and will do well, then a sequel will be made. :D

  29. Mark says:

yeah it will do well as an action movie, and like i said, i seriously hope it proves me wrong…..As an action movie lover…I’m jacked about seeing this, but as a DBZ fan….im disappointed. And just for the record, I don’t want a literal translation…like I said they could’ve translated it to be a little more dark and it wouldve satisfied action fans and DBZ fans alike.

    • Rodney says:

Mark, you need to calm down.

I had to delete your comments in which you decide you had to elevate this disagreement into childish name calling.

You can disagree and not get childish. I wont tolerate trolls.

    • Gigan300 is back!!!!! says:

rodney, i think hes doing his version of bale’s freak out

  30. Mark says:

And yes….the Dialogue by some people like Vegeta was awesome. Even GOKU had some moments….like when he went super saiyan for the first time.

    • Gigan300 is back!!!!! says:

dude you need to chill out man, its just a movie

    • Rodney says:

Post a link of these “moments” where the dialogue was considered “good”

I checked some youtube clips with some of what those fans felt were the “best lines” and they were all embarrassingly dumb.

I have yet to witness even one “cool line” in the series. Granted I haven’t seen it all, I don’t have the brain cells to sacrifice in such an effort.

    • JoseMP says:

Rodney, I will post a link of that dialogue, but im still wondering what happened with my post showing you examples with scenes and pictures showing this anime isnt for kids only.

Also I agree with you this movie is looking good, so I dont understand why was my post deleted?

  31. Gigan300 is back!!!!! says:

since you brought race in the issue michael clark duncan is black and he played kingpin who is white in the comics, and nobody argued about that.

    • Rodney says:

So a White Goku is fine.

And considering Goku was not represented by any of Earth’s cultures, I don’t think its a big deal that he isn’t Asian. Goku wasn’t, so why do the fanboys seem to think he should be?

    • Gigan300 is back!!!!! says:

to be honest race shouldnt be a big deal at all in dragonball or any other film, as long as the actor is portraying the character correctly, hell batman is american (at least thats what i was raised to believe) and christian bale is Welsh and hes the best batman ever.

  32. JoseMP says:

Rodney what happened with my post bud?

  33. JoseMP says:

I wasnt attacking you, I was actually agreeing with you, but I showed some examples of why this anime isnt targeted only for kids. What happened to that post?

    • Rodney says:

I didnt delete yours Jose, just the ones where Mark reduced his discussion to name calling.

Did you have links in it? If there is more than one link the spam filter automatically tosses them.

  34. heyshenanigans says:

Never did I consider Goku to be Asian. He has no features in the cartoon to even slightly point in the direction of that, so I don’t see what the problem is.

And as for the movie, I’m stoked now. I was excited when I first heard it happening, skeptical when I saw the first images of the actors in constumes and makeup, but then once again amped up after I saw some of the movie clips. It looks good, and I just hope and pray that it’ll do decent enough in the box office so there can *possibly* be a sequel based on the Sayain saga. (I want to see movie versions of Radditz and VEGETA)

  35. bigsampson says:

my comment got took off i think but i cant remember what i said…probley something dumb….but i have to say the trailer doesnt look bad to me…actually looks way better then i thought it would….i kinda dont like picolo but w/e not a big deal….for some reason the guy who is goku seems perfect to me cause he has that douchey pop culture look to him and that was kinda what dragonballs was….a really campy korny dialogue infested wrestling match in with aliens n monsters etc….i will download this movie when it comes to dvd but i would say atm from what i see it will probly rate a 6 out of 10 ….but this is just my speculation…and sometimes a 6 can be a perfect movie for some friends to reminisce of the days of 15 years ago lol

  36. Johnson says:

I remain skeptical as to weather this will be a good movie i can’t help but get a Mortal Combat vibe of this trailer, i’m hopeful that it is good though and a sequel is greenlit as a sequel would hopefully feature Vegeta the best character from DBZ imo.

Most of my fav moments come from him having to swallow his pride and arrogance to do the right thing, the best of which being the end of the Buu saga were Vegeta finally admits that even though he is a pure blood sayian prince that Kakorot is just that much better.

  37. Mark says:

I can understand if there are links that made stuff get deleted, but my big post was not linked in any way to my other one that I called you a name in.

  38. Formless says:

Rodney, if you check out a lot of the comments on YouTube to the Dragonball trailers you’ll find two kids who insist Goku is asian. Mainly because they’re asian and they’re shouting racist comments because they don’t want Goku being white. They even go so far as to say Goku and Piccolo aren’t aliens in Dragonball even though they are clearly revealed to be that later.

  39. Mark says:

As far as the whole Race thing goes….I understand that in the past people’s race has been changed…and it has ALWAYS brought extreme speculation by the true fans of whatever series it is….and there was a lot of speculation behind michael clark duncan being the kingpin. Like I said…even if they didn’t cast an asian, they could at least get someone who sounds, acts, and looks like him….which obviously this actor doesn’t meet any of those things. Which brings up the question how did he get the role. They should’ve casted Robin Shou.

    • Formless says:

No one ever addresses WHY they should cast an asian though. There’s no sound reason. Son Goku is not only an alien, but the other Saiyan’s all elude to speaking a language that’s at least LIKE english as all their special attacks have english titles (except for Goku obviously because he was raised and trained by who use asian martial arts).

I think besides the hair that Justin Chatwin DOES look like Goku. It’s pretty clear and easy to see. You can’t claim he doesn’t act like Goku because this is an adaption where obvious changes have been made. Don’t blame him for not acting like the original Goku.

    • Rodney says:

      Precisely Formless…

There is no reason TO cast an Asian. As to how he got the gig? Well the producers of the show had auditions and this is who they chose to go with. Same way ANYONE gets a role in Hollywood.

And really, look at the pictures of Goku. I think Chatwin comes as close as anyone NEEDS to come to looking like that guy. And the hokey way the characters are presented in the cartoon might work in animation, but it doesnt work in live action. Obviously changes had to be made.

He even wears the Orange vest, which would be hard for anyone to pull off, but he looks proper in it.

    • Ernesto says:

Robin shou is 48 years old, or 38 not sure, he too old to play goku, maybe gt goku but not db goku

    • Rodney says:

      He is 48 Ernest.

Obviously Mark has no clue what he is talking about when he claims he is such a Dragonball fan and nitpicks about every last detail then casts a 48 year old to play a teenager.

  40. Mark says:

well of course they are speaking english with their attacks due to the fact that they were translated that way….they weren’t gonna change signature attacks that were there ever since Dragon Ball days…Like I said, it doen’t NEED to be an asian, but it would be easier for an american asian to naturally look the part than most other races. This guy has a slim chance of being able to pull this off but the thing that gets me the most is according to this preview, He acts like an average joe schmo american…I’m basing this mostly off of the way he reacts to the flying bike. They portray him to be like a regular dude. Not corky at all, which IS Goku…even if they decided to make an adaption, changing the character like that when he is the Main character, ruins a big part of it for a lot of people.

    • Rodney says:

He says ONE WORD in response to seeing the flying bike and now that makes him “joe schmo american”

He says “cool” like only americans say “cool”?

Now you are just making stuff up.

    • Formless says:

Final Flash is also the name of Vegeta’s special attack in the Japanese verson, as is Trunk’s “Finish Buster” and “Buster Cannon”. Raditz also has “Double Sunday” and “Shining Friday”. All of these are moves that also share the same attack names in the english AND japanese versions of the show, manga, and games.

  41. Ernesto says:

    @rodney
its not just mark its that 2% left that bashes this movie. Robin shou has been through out there as the person, who should have been goku and none of these people even realize how old this man is. they say goku should be played by a 12 year old but they come up with Robin Shou?

  42. AndyS says:

    AVP – Trash
    AVPR – Trashier
    DBE – Trashiest

  43. MechoPower says:

Wow, that looks like shit. this movie is a joke and seeing the trailer makes it look like a really, really bad B-Rate movie. You fans have got to be kidding if you think this is cool. Even watching it high def did nothing. the special effects look no where near where they should be with todays technology.

  44. robert(wolf) says:

    I’m pretty excited about this.

-Shenlong and Oozaru being in the trailer is sweet.

    -James looks amazing as Piccolo.

I read parts of the script and I liked what I read so far. This will be a fun popcorn flick.

  45. Gutpunch says:

What an uncontrollable mess this trailer was.

  46. Uz4u says:

i liked this cartoon when i was 12, and i dont much care for it now, but i feel compelled to say

    WHAT THE FUCK!!!!

  47. NuClearLPU says:

The Changed so many things, that they just as well could have made up their own characters..

this is just what i’m thinking from seeing the trailer.. maybe the movie will have a little to do with the series, (and not just the names!!!)

    # Greatings From Denmark.

  48. AndyS says:

If you can’t understand the correlation between the AVP franchise and DBE than your favorite drink clearly is Mountain Dew.

    • Gigan300 is back!!!!! says:

well considering they both have nothing remotely in common, and for the record my favorite drink his vodka.

    • Gigan300 is back!!!!! says:

btw what the hell does someone’s favorite drink have anything to do w/ this, if you ask me you just making shit up for the sake of arguing, LOL

    • Rodney says:

And clearly since you don’t understand english your favourite air is purple.

Seriously, if you are going to try and make a point. At least make sense.

AVP and Dragonball dont look, feel or even have similar plots. They have nothing to do with each other short of your desire to make fun of them without any reason.

  49. gen0 says:

This movie should have never been made. Not every anime can be turned into a live action movie.

    • Rodney says:

There is no adaptation that “shouldnt” be made.

You wouldn’t say that if the movie turns out to be great. But you are convinced it wont be so you throw around your ignorance with words like “never”.

    • HAZMAT says:

the matrix should have never been made. its fucked up all action movies that followed it. dont get me wrong i liked the matrix….but starting with the sequels..and all movies in the same genre…they all started to do the same thing and ended up looking like dog shit

i predict transformers will do the same thing…itll start bringing new robot movies…the same idea…but they will SUUUUCKK….(robotech? voltron?)

  50. iluvmovies says:

Personally I could care less about goku not being asian or blumas hair not being blue. My beef with this movie comes from the fact that instead creating an imaginative martial arts fantasy movie using the elements of the franchise that could have broken the mold they instead decided to turn the characters into shallow archetypes and throw in overused clichés like a prophesy and a world ending eclipse for good measure. Plus there decision to exclude more relevant characters in order to include one that’s so irrelevant they had to invent a power for her to seem interesting. And while this trailer is the best one so far that’s not really saying much. The highlight is the goku vs. piccolo clips and those look like they were done on a smallville budget. when a series known for revolutionary fight scenes can’t show you a glimpse of one in the trailer that’s a bad sign. If this is the best they got count me out.

    • Ernesto says:

don’t worry we still haven’t seen the official trailer, that just a teaser. also you have to remember cartoons to live action is extremely difficult.

    • iluvmovies says:

i would agree but with the special effects technology that exists today and this flims reported 100 mil budget plus stephen chow supposed to be producing i’d like to think we could get fights up to the level of dragonball before the z kicked in. and the movie comes out in april so if this isn’t the final trailer when is it coming out

  51. RDB says:

Im a big fan of the Dragonball franchise . A lot of people get upset with big hollywood movies when there adapted from there favourite TV shows, Comics and Toys they get upset over small stuff they get angry and type things they regret when the movie turns out to be a success e.g Transformers. I had a friend who was a transformers fan and he would mention the movie all the time before it came out and say things “its gonna suck if shia Lebeouf is in it.” and whatever but when the movie became this big hit he was the first to say “Yeah the transformers movie was awesome” and he would still pick at small things that werent like the transformers cartoon and toys in the movie things that people who wearnt into transformers didnt care about. Like i said im a fan so Im gonna go see this movie im not that kinda fan who cuts himself over petty things like the fact that bulma’s hair isnt blue in the movies and we all know if your a fan of the Dragonball franchise your gonna watch this movie. If people who know nothing about the dragonball franchise enjoy this movie the fans will like it even more. If those people who know nothing about dragonball franchise hate this movie the fans will hate it even more (but still secretly love it)

    • Rodney says:

So if they made this 5 years ago and it sucked more, then you would be satisfied because you didn’t have to wait?

What does waiting have to do with it?

But yes, Dragonball fans will still attend this in droves and then have to pretend to hate it because they made blind assumptions before it came out.

    • iluvmovies says:

you know whats really sad rodney. you’re probably right. i can’t tell you how many posts and comments i’ve seen with fans stating this is going to be the worse film ever made and condemning it to hell only to continue on in the very next sentence and say they’ll be there on day one. and i’m left thinking how could anyone believe somebodys trying to stiff you with an inferior product and be willing to throw money at it just because

  52. AndyS says:

Lets see what do AVP/AVPR and DBE have in common hmmmmm:

    Bad Writing
    Bad Directing
    False promises
    Terrible use of budgets
Horrible reviews by critics (just watch I bet you 2 apples DBE doesn’t get above a 10 on RT)

So ya there are things the 2 have in common, of course I wasn’t implying the 3 movies were similar in setting or style.

  53. AndyS says:

It doesn’t take an intelligent person to take all the information concerning the DBE movie as well as the clips and photos already released to make a a highly probable realistic guess which will soon be shown to be correct. I think it is ridiculous that I’m having to defend and explain the notion that this movie will be bad.

    • Ernesto says:

your right it probably doesn’t, but you mentioned bad writing, how can you know that if the teaser trailer is 1 minute long? matter of fact anything you just said how do you know? now Im not here to change anyone’s mind, but I am always interested in knowing what makes you bashers so sure?

    • Gigan300 is back!!!!! says:

so your a prophet now huh? well since you seem to be able to tell the future then who will be the next batman villian?

    • Rodney says:

But it would take a psychic.

Your “highly probable” assumption just repeats the same thing I have always challenged you on.

You act like you already know everything about this and you don’t. That you feel you have to defend and explain it is because you ASSUME with no grounds for your assumption short of just guessing.

You cant defend it. Because you have nothing but your guesses to try and defend. You assume it will be bad. You assume the writing will be poor. You assume the effects will be bad.

All you are doing is assuming. Guessing based on 60 seconds of footage.

You are allowed to assume. But don’t expect everyone to jump to the same conclusion as you are.

  54. AndyS says:

Rodney those 60 seconds you speak of are 60 seconds the studio decided to release to generate buzz and show the masses what to expect from their movie. Your correct I’m doing a lot of assuming but I don’t see it as blind assuming since from all that I’ve read, all that I’ve been shown and a little common sense has added up to know this movie will fail.

To the person suggesting that I’m psychic and should be able to predict the next Batman Villain; it’s pretty clear that the amount of information given to successfully predict the outcome of the DBE movie has been provided far more than anything related to Batman’s next Villain.

    • Rodney says:

All you have read is more assuming.

NO ONE you have read has read the script or seen the movie. There is very little dialogue or writing in the trailer, so even though it is what the studio put forward to promote the film was nothing but some visual effects shots and about 6 seconds of premise.

Just how much of this critical information is it that you seem privy to that will predict the outcome of this film?

Drooling fanboys are dying to hate this film because it is not a direct translation of the cartoon. It is an adpatation. People fear change. And that is all you have so far is fear.

Myself, and others look at this trailer and see an action packed summer popcorn flick with some great looking special effects, some martial arts, some sci-fi tech and what promises to be a fun film.

Dragonball zealots see that a white guy is playing a character they have managed to blindly convince themselves is Asian and want to focus on how this adaptation is different from their beloved cartoon (which cannot directly translate to live action… ever) and rage that they know better.

Andy. You assume. Its ok that you choose to dislike this film. That’s what anticipation is all about. But you hopped on the fanboy bandwagon and cannot even justify why you hate it, and you haven’t seen it yet. I am just saying that you are denying yourself the chance at a decent summer action flick.

It might bomb. But it will have nothing to do with the changes required to adapt this movie to live action.

  55. RDB says:

    History lesson

Remember that classic story “Journey to the west” originally published anonymously in the 1590s(thanks wikipedia) which a crazy little campy tv series “Monkey Magic!” or simply “Monkey” was adapted from. Well the dragonball franchise is very much based on that. From the manga to the cartoon series dragonball, dragonball z and dragon ball gt. (Oh and somewhere along the line there were was a live action movie) and now there making the first big budget live action movie….

So where am i going with this. well it seems its going along a little like the batman franchise. which started out as a somewhat serious comic book. then to a kid friendly crazy campy tv show. then batman got a little darker and a little more serious again. then we had the first big budget batman movie BATMAN (1989).

So the dragonball series is now where batman was back in 1989. (Hopefully it will skip the whole batman forever and batman and robin stages though.)

  56. asdasdasd says:

haters will always be haters no matter how good the movie is haters is haters like ANDYS hes a prophet and he knows what gonna happend next. I will laugh at your a** cause Im sure your gonna watch it and spend some bucks in the movie that you dont like PS.

  57. akirajinn says:

dragonball was originally based on the story “journey to the west” or “monkey” if you saw it on tv.
    whats the point of re-imagining a re-imagining.
film studios are stealing my money churning out half hearted knock offs of tried and true source material.
at least have the decency to call it something else
“goku’s magic balls” or “american monkey man fights monsters with magic stick” but i guess no one would watch that.
this looks as good and faithful to the source material as jean claude van damms “streetfighter”.
the longer they go with this story the less it will be dragonball.
but if you can turn a c-grade movie into an box office smash by milking a name they will just keep comming.
stop the madness don’t fall for the hype, spend your money on a “monkey” box set or try “saiyuki”
    (another re-imagining of “monkey”).
make the studios start working for you money instead of defrauding from you.

  58. akirajinn says:

in the trailer they say seven wise men made the dragonballs to fight monsters.
in the cartoon it was a nameless namekian who came to earth and became its guardian.
to become the guardian the namekian had to seperate his good side from his dark side, the good side becoming kami and the evil side king piccillo.
if at any time kami or piccillo are killed they both die and the dragonballs turn to stone.
in the trailer goku looks like some everyday joe that discovers latent powers.
in the cartoon he is an alien sent to earth to clear it of life but after a violent crash landing his natural instinct to destroy is forgotten and he is found by a wandering kung fu master (grandpa gohan) and is raised as his own.
tragicly gohan died and 10 year old goku is left to fend for himself. it is the that he meet bulma and joins her quest to find the dragonballs.

how will they ever introduce characters like vegeta or freiza (by making them shit, thats how).

    • Rodney says:

I have an idea? How about instead of hoping the loony ass zany crap in the cartoon might look like anything BUT PeeWee’s playhouse on crack.

They have to adapt this to make it a broader appeal. The very limited fanbase, as big as it is, are NOT the ones they are hoping to drag to this movie. Instead they hope to drag EVERYONE to this movie.

It is a movie, and by definition it means “changed for a different environment” but instead of just accepting that and trying to enjoy it you are worried how badguys inspired by a salad bar are supposed to be introduced?

      You just proved my point.

  59. Michael says:

Regardless to what anyone says l.o.l I believe this movie will be pretty good.

  60. Gigan300 is back!!!!! says:

these are the “best” moments i could find which is pretty sad if these are the best i really dont want to see the worst.

  61. Ernesto says:

well yeah, maybe a lot of trailers do that, its the only way to get people to watch it.

  62. Rodney says:

And a lot of trailers that make a movie look good are easy to make… because… brace yourself for this….

    The movie might look good??
