First Look at Burton’s Alice in Wonderland

By Rodney - March 13, 2009 - 09:42 America/Montreal

Tim Burton will be applying his keen eye for the fantastic in an upcoming live adaptation of Disney’s animated feature Alice in Wonderland. Recently Disney launched a magazine to promote their projects, and in its premier issue we get the first peek at how the movie will look.

ComingSoon says:

Posters at The Tim Burton Collective have scanned the article which features a new photo and concept art from the film, starring Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Sheen, Mia Wasikowska, Matt Lucas, Crispin Glover, Stephen Fry and Alan Rickman.

John and I disagree on Burton quite a bit. I have always been a fan of Burton’s fantasy worlds and I think he was a perfect choice for this adaptation. Of course Burton brings his own star posse with him and his hauntingly beautiful wife and hetero life partner Johnny Depp will be staring. Of course the studios asked most websites to take the image of Depp as the Mad Hatter down, but its out there somewhere

I am looking forward to this a lot.

If you want to catch the scans of the article and more images and concept art, The Tim Burton Collective fan forums has them, or pick up Disney’s new magazine D23

the cast is just amazing, after seeing burtons sweeney todd, im really exciting for this one…only if he keeps it creepy, and odd…

Now don’t get me wrong, I am totally looking forward to this. Can’t wait to see how Burton retells the story, but why isn’t this getting the “OMG Another remake!” or “Oh GOD my childhood!!!” treatment that other movies do? There has already been a Disney cartoons of, then there was also the Alice Through the Looking Glass movie, and America McGee’s Alice. I am sure there are others out there as well, these are just the first to come to mind that used the book as source material. Is it because Burton is doing it? Just curious, not trying to pick a fight or anything.

it’s because it is another take, not a remake.

    • Jeremy K. says:

Like Halloween, that got the same treatment? Another take is a retelling and still a remake in all actuality.

    • Rodney says:

This is a remake in the sense that it is Disney basing this live action adaptation from its own version. Adaptations and Remakes are kissing cousins.

Another take would just be another studio adapting the source material from the public domain story of Through the Looking Glass.

    • Jeremy K. says:

Ah, much better said than I. New question. Would people be more excited about a Neverending Story remake if Burton was directing it and he had Depp playing the Snail the guy rides on and Carter dressing up like a giant cloud playing the Nothing, or would we still get the “oh my childhood” and “Hollywood has no original ideas” remarks that accompany a typical remake announcement?

I cannot wait to see the full cast and how Burton depicts all the characters in terms of race. It will be interesting to see the diversity included in this adaptation of Alice in Wonderland.
