Isn't this whole movie a straight rip off of Gladiator ('92) with James Marshall and Cuba Gooding Jr?

Damn late night TV....

What did I tell you when I mentioned in your post about Dito Montiel John? I laughed when I heard you complain about his camera and editing work. He did too much shitty camera work in saints and he was totally edit happy and did too many camera tricks instead of allowing the film to tell the story. Too much choppy editing is annoying.

John, I totally agree on yours and others' shaky cam comments - Thats been bugging me on so many movies lately. Its what single-handedly ruined Blade II for me. I also thought the Bourne Trilogy had some great fights and like you mentioned, the camera movements did nothing to showcase the awesome choreography.

Shaky Cam is used to make it seem more realistic, sure, but its also to hide the fact that there are stunt doubles and hide the fact the actors can't sell the fight scenes. Which is a shame they did that in this movie, because Cung Le had some awesome moves in this movie that you could bare make out. The flying scissors kick was wicked, he used that alot in his K-1 San Shou matches.
Have you ever seen Donnie Yen or Jet Li using shaky cam fight scenes in Hong Kong? Or Tony Jaa and shaky cam??

Samantha,

No, it's not his style. The shaky cam thing is a thing that a LOT of directors have been using the last 5 years and it's pathetic and takes away from the movie watching experience.

What's the point in having a fight scene if you can't see the fight? That's not a style, that's a cop out.

wow.
Saw this movie over the weekend. It sucked more than a black hole. Fucking shaky cam, ruins everything. When will action directors learn from Hong Kong and film fight scenes in a wide angle full shot.
I see what you mean about the lack of dialog and Tatum's babbling in every scene.

you guys have no clue what your talking about,
the directors style ( dito montiel ) is the shaky affect.
i think it adds character to the movie , and makes it less of a stock fast and furious, TYPICAL movie.
i think tatum did well in his movie, especially considering the fact of his crap other movies like Step Up.
i think you should learn a little more about different filmography styles before you dub it ridiculous.
montiel made it more original, making it feel like you were actually there rather than making it feel like an overproduced ghetto drama like everything else out there.

Got to agree that shaky cam ruins movies. But my new thing is quick choppy clips edited together to string an action piece together. I watched the most recent bond and I could not follow what was going on for the life of me.

I know its hard to shoot one long continous action shot but the one is the Protector is epic.
