Thor Casting In Final Stages

I’m not all that pumped about the upcoming “Thor” movie. I’ll admit I was never taken with him much as a comic book character and I don’t have much hope for seeing a screen adaptation. HOWEVER… keep in mind that I had the exact same feelings when it was announced Iron Man was being made into a movie… and I ended up LOVING that. So there you go.

Still, when it was announced that master actor and filmmaker Kenneth Branagh was taking the help of the movie, I couldn’t help with get a little more interested. It’s an interesting choice for certain… a major Shakespearean guy taking on a comic book movie? I’m curious to see how it turns out.

With that said, there has still been no work on WHO will play Thor (or any other role in the movie for that matter). But in a recent interview Kenneth Branagh has just stated that we’ll know very soon because they’re in the final stages of the casting. The folks at MTV give us this:

“We’re down to the final stages of it,” Branagh told MTV News of the “Thor” casting timeline. “The reason one has to be properly diplomatic, is simply that some talented peopled have been patient, kind, creative and really committed to working with us in this process.”

“My reluctance to say anything about it is simply out of respect for people who have been extremely respectful of us,” continued Branagh. “That said, I think we are extremely close and I hope to announce a decision sooner rather than later.”

Sound to me like he’s already made his decision and they’re just holding off on announcing things until they can sit down and talk to all the other people who weren’t cast to explain their decision. Pretty classy actually.

So who do you think they’ve chosen to play Thor?

You can skip to the end and leave a response.

“So who do you think they’ve chosen to play Thor?”

Probably someone too young, not hard enough looking.
Thor should look like he has some miles on him. – like Kevin McKidd.

I’m counting on being disappointed with the choice, although I’m not much of a Thor fan either. This is one hero that requires a huge mega dose of suspension of disbelief as it is, even more than Hulk. Not all characters will translate from comic book page to big screen…Marvel is going to find this out the hard way I think.

    • Rodney says:

      McKidd was my choice too.

    • haole says:

I’m going to disagree, simply saying that he should be a pretty boy because his character was that of an arrogant pretty boy. That’s why Oden forced him to learn some humility by making him a limp doctor.

    • Vegetamon says:

uh dude they kinda already found out. Remember Ghostrider? And I don’t see why Thor wouldn’t adapt well with movies like Clash of the Titans coming out.
      Just sayin

  2. Kevin says:

i dont see how this could be cool…..and Thor definately would look odd next to Edward Norton, Robert Downey Jr and whomever they choose to be Captain America in an eventual Avengers movie….it would just be cheese ball

  3. Jeremy K. says:

My extent of knowledge on Thor comes from Adventures in Babysitting, so I leave the guesswork of who will play him to those that know more about the comic; however, with Kenneth Branagh at the helm, I have faith that he will choose wisely for the most the part. BUT, he did cast Keanu Reeves in Much Ado About Nothing, so there might be a spark of doubt deep in the back of my mind. Will be interesting to see how this movie progresses, though.

    • Meli says:

LoL, that is his one black mark in casting with me too…wow…I love Much Ado About Nothing, but Keanu was horribly cast and awful.

  4. Gutpunch says:

Thor is a silly character to begin with and they’d have to do a complete make over to make him look convincing in the real world, no winged helmets for one. What looks good on paper rarely looks good in real life.

    • Rodney says:

      Silly? Maybe the costume.

The character is far from silly and has a great story behind him. I just hope they hit it out of the park.

    • bigsampson says:

wtf are u serious punch….its fucking thor…u know the diety….funny how one premise is allright but something that has been in mythology for eons is silly.

    • Gutpunch says:

Marvel Thor and the original Nordic Thor are two completely different things and should not be compared.

  5. probitionate says:

Funny, this. How much hate/disinterest gets spewed towards a Marvel character that is, admittedly, not as ‘cool’ as some of the others (for the record, I’m a HUGE Thor fan, he was definitely my fave growing up in the John Buscema days)…and yet love is doled out for Transformers…and He-Man.

Oh; I just wet my drawers with the resultant laughter.

At least Branagh’s doing this, so at the very least, it’s going to be ‘interesting’.

I hope it rocks and all of you naysayers pull hammies trying to haul yourselves up onto the bandwagon. LOL

  6. I’m guessing that it will coincide with this year’s Comic-Con, similar to the Superman Returns writer, who has promised a special announcement as well. Branagh’s a well-established director so I think the property is in good hands.

  7. T-Vo says:

Can;t wait! Along with Silver Surfer and Dr. Strange, Thor is one of top 3 fav comic book heroes.
Thor would be epic on the big screen, calling down Thunder and Lightning yelling out “I say thee nay, base Vilaain!”

  8. Phil Gee says:

I always love hearing the casting announcements on the Marvel films. Usually, the people they cast are really credible choices but people you’d never think of beforehand.

There is no chance of it happening but i’ve been saying for a year now that Paul Dano would be amazing as Loki.

  9. Vito says:

Kevin McKidd, dammit! Kevin fucking McKidd!

Oh well, I guess Alexander Skarsgaard(or however you spell it)will have to do.

  10. nerrojj says:

I going with Stellan Skarsgård or his son Alexander Skarsgård. Kevin McKidd would also work, I could also see him in the role. But I would prefer an actor from the Scandinavian Peninsula or at least has linage from Scandinavia (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden). Thor is a Norse God so it would be fitting that he be portrayed by a Nordic.

  11. HAZMAT says:

    Ice Man from Generation Kill

  12. Hassleberry says:

Triple H, but he’s a little old for the role. And I think with enough patience, he could be a good actor.

    • Rodney says:

Stop trying to name wrestlers as actors.

They want to actually make a serious movie here, not some half budget attempt to appease some corner fans. They need someone who can actually act, not just someone who can flex their muscles and fall off a top rope.

    • Vegetamon says:

What do you think of Daniel Craig? He is my choice because he can definitely act and he is huge.

  13. Derek 8-Track says:

Daniel Craig would’ve been nice. I’ve got my fingers crossed for Viggo Mortenson… or pretty much anyone who played a man in LOTR.

    • HAZMAT says:

      Liv Tyler?

    • I…awwwwwshyyyyyttttt…..

What happens if….say an actor from LOTR is chosen, pumps up?
I hate to say the name but it could work

No, you don’t want me to say the actor’s name. Neither should you!

      O ‘ Lando
      B’ Loom

    • HAZMAT says:

      No.

I thought he was a good actor at first but then realized hes the same fucking expressionless douche in every movie

      “awwwwwshyyyyyttttt”

      lolol

  14. Meli says:

I wish they would just make the announcement already the suspense is driving me nutty. LoL

I’m hoping for Alexander Skarsgard, but I’d be cool with Kevin McKidd both would do well with the role.

  15. (((ducking from the tomatos and squash being thrown at him from previous comment))))

I hope for Skarsgard or McKidd as well. But didn’t McKidd say he wasn’t approached/interested?

No, seriously. The more I think about it, the more I think buffed up Orlando Bloom. Call me crazy, insane, delusional…but for some reason, Orlando Bloom keeps popping up in my mind for the part.

Yes, I damn well know Doug Nagy is going to hunt me down like Chinatown for such a blasphemy. But if the schedule permits…

    yes, it just might. Just…might…

and I hang my head in shame.

just get brad pitt like doug’s been sayin for yrs.

  18. Hassleberry says:

Most wrestlers aren’t very good actors., but if you look at the resemblence between them, he looks a lot like him, I mean I don’t really know what Odin looks like (I’ll google image him later), but if he looks like Thor, then I think he could be a good Odin (or did they already cast someone as him?).

  19. Thos says:

    Kevin McKidd would be awesome!

  20. leeloo says:

branagh doing tales of asgard is gonna rock.

  21. JohnZDelorean says:

Can we get the Ultimate interpretation of the character who everyone thinks is nuts because he says he is a god til they see the proof.

  22. War-Journalist says:

I think an acting choice is all about respect. Unless this movie is marketed & cast perfectly it will get no respect. Especially in Thor’s area. He wears a red cape, speaks Shakespearean, and swings a hammer that shoots lightening bolts. That’s not exactly hard to ridicule. We need an actor who can look & sound serious, commanding, and natural with the language.

What I mean is that we need the hecklers and douchebags either shitting themselves, or so engaged that they can’t find anything to screw with.
Iron Man received all kinds of respect because it was a good movie, and they kept it rooted in science and logic (as best they could).
The Hulk on the other hand needed to prove himself; he had to do that one enormously fantastic feat of strength and power that would just make everyone say “whoa.” Unfortunately that didn’t happen, and the Hulk suffered severely from ridicule. “He never really went incredible.”

And so we need that with Thor. No silliness, no stupidity, just hardcore demon-trouncing action combined with a decent & simplistic costume, and balancing it out with easily translatable Shakespearean dialogue.
Kevin McKidd seems too young, and Skaarsgard seems too flimsy. And like I said we need someone who commands respect the moment they appear on screen.
And just remember Branagh: You don’t only hold the fate of Thor in you hands, but that of ALL the mystical and non-scientific Marvel characters. If this fails to place a good balance of magic & science/technology, then we can forget about Dr. Strange, or a decent Ghost Rider remake (just to name a few).
I don’t know who they found, but I hope it was a damn good choice.

  23. Chisox says:

Nikki Finke just confirmed is George Kirk.

  24. bjon86 says:

Knowing that Thor is one of the corniest comic characters EVER is wut has me PUMPED to see this movie. Marvel made Iron Man AWESOME and The Hulk AWESOME AWESOME. I think they can pull this off. See they’ve got “love” on their side. Their love for these characters. And it shows in their movies.
