Dreamworks to make Masi Oka’s The Defenders

Masi Oka is really my Hero. The guy plays Hiro, on Heroes, and he plays a comic book geek living out the fantasy. Which parallels his own life as he was once a geeky animator who fantasized about being an actor. The one time Star Trek fanboy got to share time with his own idol George Takei (Sulu played his father on Heroes).

Now he has developed a script for an adventure movie based on MMORPG gamers. And he has Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci producing.

Coming Soon says:

The story centers on a group of mostly teenagers from around the world who are involved in a multiplayer video game, each unaware of who they really are behind the cover of their consoles and avatars. They are forced to come together for a real adventure, becoming inadvertent heroes in the process.

Oka, who will executive produce, came up with idea while playing massively multiplayer online role-playing games, in that world’s parlance.

I really like Masi Oka. Maybe a little too much. The guy is just so likable and he appeals to the inner geek in all of us.

This gives hope to the geek, and this movie has a lot of potential to appeal to the same crowd. Featuring main characters who all find themselves quietly escaping reality in a game that will bring them together for a real adventure? Sounds like a fun ride.

It reminds me of Felicia Day’s The Guild which revolves around a group of online friends who otherwise wouldn’t know each other but find themselves becoming friends in the real world. Really worth the watch.

Yeah, Im not really a fan of anything Masi Oka has done, Heroes Season 1 was only okay in my opinion (other seasons, what I saw, not so much), and Get Smart was complete and utter crap (Oka wasn’t the worst part but his part still sucked). He does seem like a very likeable guy in real life though, and this movie, although sounding extremely silly, could be a fun ’80s style flick. I feel, for it to be successful at all, it needs to be told with tongue planted firmly in cheek.

I agree. His nerdy character was interesting and refreshing in the beginning but once everyone realized that he was never going to actually develop as a character he just got anoying.

this doesnt sound anything like the guild imo, but i would say if u play MMO’s you should check it out cause the show is a riot … btw i just got my account hacked by a god damn battle.net keylogger…dont sign up for that shit IMO.

On the contrary, when I was reading the description the only thing I could think of was The Guild. I am not a fan of that series so I am not too psyched for this but I like Masi Oka so this could be interesting.

Battle.net doesn’t use a keylogger you got that from somewhere else.

But as for The Guild, this does share a common thread. The main cast only knows each other because of the online game they play. They come together as friends to accomplish a common goal because of the friendships they forge online. But the personalities online don’t always match up with the people they meet.

Everyone is gonna have to upgrade to a battle.net account eventually, I hear. And I gaurentee you that you didn’t get that keylogger from battle.net.

    Dammit, where’s my Warcraft movie?

Am I the only one who thought of Cloak and Dagger while reading this post?

I think it was the avartar aspect that made me think of it. Now that is a movie that needs updating!

MMPORG’s are the scurge of the planet.
