Is Pixar going for Monsters Inc 2?
It is always exciting to hear about what Pixar is up to. And apparently Toy Story is not the only franchise going to the sequel farm. International Licensing Expo floor was a buzz about a sequel to Monster’s Inc.
several of the buyers still revealed how excited they are about news that director Pete Docter will be following up Pixar’s “Up” with a sequel to “Monsters Inc.”
This of course is just convention floor chatter and bolstered by an alleged search Pixar staffers made for “monsters 2013″ and while no one was denying it, its also a stretch to call it a confirmation.
If the story was worth telling, I could see a sequel, but the movie kinda ended on a solid note. The Monsters Inc company realized that their energy shortage (which they derrived from the screams of children in the Earth Realm) was non-existant once they realized the power of a child’s laughter was 10 times more potent.
So where is the story?
I never doubt Pixar (they have earned that much) but I would have to hear more before I get excited about this.

I’m sure the most obvious but worst way to take the story is to have the next adventure in the human world. I hope that doesn’t happen.
Kitty!
As much as I LOVE Monsters, Inc., I don’t want a sequel. I like where the movie leaves us, and I don’t want them doing more with it.
I pretty much feel the same way. I’m sure I’ll be pleased with what they do with the story, but right now I feel as if it’s unnecessary.
As much as I enjoyed Monsters Inc, I’d rather there not be a sequel. Apart from Toy Story, I like Pixar has focused on creating something completely different from all past endeavors. I’m not as excited as some are for Toy Story 3, though I will see it in theaters despite not being a fan of the the first two. I always look forward to seeing what new creations Pixar will come up with and how they will generate an emotional response through these characters and stories. Sequels just mean a longer wait til their next new creation. I will see them none-the-less, I just hope that talks of sequels does not mean they are running out of ideas over there for new and original endeavors.
well, jeremy.there is news to make you feel a lil better about PIXAR going back to the well and making sequels.
they are now producing multiple movies at a time(as im sure has always been the case–>it takes them 4 years to make a film)…but now they have plans to relase more then one film a year…
i agree with you that monsters inc, like most of their films stand alone, and tie up the stories loose ends well enough that we dont NEED sequels…but if they can add to and improve on some of their classics, i have NO beef….
but i say that to say this, yes, they ARE making a cars 2, tos story 3, and now news of this POSSIBLE sequel, but PIXAR is also producing an original called NEWT, a live action movie and other original films WHILE they add to their already existing franchises…..
so if anything well be getting more work from pixar to enjoy, and hopefully they can continue their successful story telling.
Yeah, I can’t wait to see more about Pixar’s live action movies (John Carter of Mars is one, I believe). I reutinely find myself thinking “I would care so much more about these characters if they weren’t cartoon” while watching pixar films (I’m in the vast minority, I know). Plus I sometimes think that people let certain cliches or mediocre jokes pass in some pixar movies because they are animated. I enjoyed Up, but seriously, I could name other movies that almost each and every joke pixar threw at us has been in, most of the scenes to (not involving a house floating with balloons of course). I’m interested to see if those thoughts transfer to live action, or will it suddenly feel like “kid stuff” in a live action film? Also I’m interested to see if a live action pixar film will get nominated for best picture.
On Up!’s behalf, I think comedy was kind of on the back burner on this one. Sure it had its comedy, but as you said it was mostly rehashed comedy. Though, the old man having a house strapped to his back practically the entire movie was quite original. Everything else, on the other hand, just left me awe. A lot of great messages in the story telling ranging from childhood dreams to youth/elderly relationships. Beyond story, the artistry in the animation was amazing as well. I remember the special feature on Finding Nemo dealing strictly with creating realistic underwater scenes. I can only imagine the special feature that will be included on the Up! dvd dealing with the balloons.
Well, yes, the “idea” of the film was original, but an idea is only small part of a movie. A great idea doesn’t necessarily warrent a great film to follow. I think comedy wasn’t put on the back burner as much as you do, there was quite a lot of it, and it was, often times, very much front and center (to me at least). Don’t get me wrong Up did some great things and very original things SPOILER (a miscarrage in an animated kid’s film?!? Holy shit!). I’m just saying, to me, it was far from a perfect film, or even a great one, mostly because a lot of it felt like I’d sorta been there and sorta done that. Not just the comedy, but many other scenes as well.
The animation was great, when the house first took off and the colored shadow of the balloons were cast onto the city, that was pretty magical. I much enjoyed that Finding Nemo featurette as well.
While I of course trust in Pixar and would see a sequel to every movie they made, MONSTERS INC. 2 would not be my choice.
Why not a sequel to THE INCREDIBLES?
That would be the route I would go for. Maybe Brad Bird is not available or something.
100% agree. of all their movies i have seen, The Incredibles almost sets itself up for a sequel, where the others like to end with most problems and questions solved…
the INCREDIBLES had finally teamed up and started fighting evil doers as a family for the last 45 minutes of the movie…theres alot more they could do with those characters, and come up with an evan better super villain(and bring back edna modes ofcourse)…
I’d rather them do a Incredibles sequel as well. They have another Cars movie coming out too, right? I am not looking forward to that.
Cars sequel is NOT needed. Cars original was not needed.
I’ve expected a backlash against Pixar for a while, and all these sequels just might bring it.
I have a sinking feeling that the black hand of Disney is at work. It seems that ever since Disney aquired PIXAR more and more rumors of sequels have been popping up. Oh well, it’s a shame, but that’s the way they do business, hopefully it’s good.
Only Pixar movie I really care to see a sequel of is The Incredibles. I mean sure, I loved Monsters Inc, but it doesn’t need a sequel, nor did it end like there was even going to be one, like The Incredibles did. I’m not even that excited about another Toy Story coming out next year. But I suppose I will see it, being that it is Pixar and all. Just like I’ll end up seeing a Monsters Inc. 2, if they do make one, damn you Pixar, for making good movies no matter what! ;p
Although I guess if they are going in order, a Monsters Inc. 2 would be next in line before Incredibles 2. I just hope this doesn’t become a running thing for Pixar, focusing on sequels of there already successful properties and no longer coming up with original ideas.
For some reason Dreamworks thinks we need 4 Shrek movies and a Shrek Broadway musical, but why, no one really knows…
I have always been against them doing sequels (mostly because that seems to be the biggest problem with DreamWorks Animation which I hate) but I can still see it for Toy Story, I can see it for Cars, I can see it for Bugs Life, I can see it for (and is actually my acceptation to the no sequel rule) The Incredibles. The ones I can’t see it for is Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc. These two are just so well written and balanced out that they are almost perfect stories and have perfect endings that to add to it would seem actually seem to take away from it.
how many sequels is pixar pushin out, first we get toy story 3, then the alleged cars 2 and now monsters inc. 2
other than the toy story movies, the incredibles is my favorite pixar movie & incredibles should get a sequel made before cars & monsters inc.
I kind of like just one Pixar movie a year, just like Christmas.
More than one a year and they will start to lose their elite status.
You cant sequel this…it ends with them making people laugh….and Kitty is like…older, right?
