Joss Whedon Says “No Thanks” To Involvement With Buffy Remake

When the news came out that the studio was moving forward with a Buffy The Vampire Slayer remake movie without any involvement from Joss Whedon whatsoever, the anger swelled over the internet faster than LA Laker fans forgave Kobe for rape. It was more than anger… it was downright venom.

Well… apparently the producers have been a little taken aback by all the negative publicity and reached out to Joss Whedon. What was Whedon’s response? A proverbial big giant middle finger of glory.

The good folks over at AICN give us the following:

After news of a new, Whedon-free “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” movie was greeted by howls of outrage from fans of the franchise, the big-screen project’s producers did “ultimately reach out” to franchise mastermind Joss Whedon, Whedon reveals to Entertainment Weekly.

“I think that’s something better left untouched by me,” Whedon tells Entertainment Weekly. “So I wish them luck.” An EW poll reveals that 3% of respondants would see a Whedon-free “Buffy.”

So now, not only is Joss Whedon not involved with the Buffy remake… he apparently has snubbed his nose to it. If his non-involvement with the movie wasn’t going to kill the remake… maybe this will.

Or will it?

  1. I didn’t know John hated the lakers so much. The timing is impeccable. Three words.. let it go, Nobody cares. I do think it was a good move on Whedon’s part, he’s done about all he can with the Buffy series anyway.

  2. Best conversation ever…I love rape…

…but more on topic here – I love Joss…and if he pulls out of this, I have no hopes left for this movie. It’s going to be utter shit – Just another remake…just another quick attempt to make a buck or two.

  3. First off, @ bigsampson: who gives a rat’s ass about Kobe? he’s an overrated player and John’s comment was just a joke at the expense of someone who more than deserves it, so your indignation over it is quitie frankly puzzling.
Secondly, thank God Whedon is staying far away from this mess of a project that is sinking fast and taking everyone that’s onboard with it.

  4. Anyone that works as hard as Kobe Bryant deserves to get away with a few forced entries.

And im not sure if this Joss Whedon had anything to do with the original Buffy movie but the show was dumb and retarded. Only humans with vaginas enjoyed that show.

    1. Be a Kobe worshipper all you want. That is his DIRECT quote.

Unless you are the most ignorant and stuid person on the planet (which is possible for a rapist like Kobe) then there is no way you can NOW see the sex wasn’t consensual, but didn’t see it at the time.

Maybe if he called his WIFE while he was raping that chick she could have clarified it for him

  5. I’ll check it out as long as it’s not a musical or an after school special, like much of the sixth season of Buffy…and yes I know it’s a remake of the movie and not based on the TV series.

  6. Good for Whedon, he should stay away, at all costs.

They didn’t want him involved before and now that most everyone is saying they don’t want the movie, the producers are crawling back to him begging for his involvement. They’ll probably just take whatever he wants to do with it and turn it into crap anyways.

That’s awesome that none of the fans are supporting it too. Hopefully, this will all just die off soon and never even get close to being made, for Whedon and all the die hard fans sake’s.

  7. I’m not sure I care one way or the other. Whedon-less Buffy will either suck or it won’t. His involvment doesn’t make it an instant hit. Look at how Serenity did in theatres and he directed it!!

  8. I still don’t get the fanfare behind Joss Whedon. I tried watching Buffy, the series, when it was originally on TV and just found it horrible. Recently I tried to watch Angel, and again found it horrible. I was never able to get past the first season on both, did the show majorly mature over the seasons that made it more interesting and praise worthy? Serenity was alright, but still not something I would praise over and go out of my way to watch whenever its on TV. Never got around to seeing the Firefly series, was it better? First half of Dollhouse was horrible, but the final episodes were pretty damn good; however, that’s still not enough of a redeeming quality to get Whedon praise out of me like some people do. The one Whedon show I have not yet seen, but really want to, is the Dr. Horrible one. So I got to know, why do people love Whedon so much for? It it merely because he tends to go against the grain of mainstream, or do his shows actually evolve into something good as the seasons provide maturity? I don’t know why there can’t be a new movie in the Buffy universe without Whedon’s hand in it.

    1. Firefly was amazing. You can watch it on hulu. I didn’t see it until after Serenity and I kicked myself for not watching it when it was on. I thought (and still think) the name of the show was lame. But it’s the best sci fi show I’ve ever seen… and I’m a huge sci fi fan. That the sci fi channel didn’t pick up the series after fox canceled it perplexes me greatly.

    2. I’ll give it a go. How would you say it compares to Serenity? As seen by the list of Whedon shows I have tried to watch, I really do want to like the guy and hold up on a pedestal as so many seem to do; I just haven’t seen anything by him that would make me feel so die hard about him. Maybe Firefly will spark a fire for me. :D

  9. nice low blow to Kobe there.

u do know that girl had semen traces from 3 other men in her panties from THAT one nite alone??

u do know the prosecution dropped its case because this girl was LYING right?

im not a laker fan, let alone a Kobe fan. I hate the guy….but seriously, get over it. the guy didnt do shit to that girl she didnt want, let alone did Kobe bryant do anything to you.

kobe and 50 cent….Johns secret love interests.

    1. Hey Bale,

None of what you said is true. It’s just fake stuff that Kobe fans have made up to justify themselves. Here are Kobe’s own word that he was forced to say as a part of the settlement:

“I also want to make it clear that I do not question the motives of this young woman. No money has been paid to this woman. She has agreed that this statement will not be used against me in the civil case. Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual, I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did. After months of reviewing discovery, listening to her attorney, and even her testimony in person, I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter.”

How the FUCK do you “see how she didn’t think it was consensual” but didn’t see it at the time you were raping her???

    2. well john i can go find court documents on the case that beg to differ…and sorry to say but if she was raped then she wouldnt of handled the end of the case like that and david stern would not let him play in the NBA…..w/e im not gonna argue any more cause your text has a black box on it…btw i remember someone saying KOBE was overrated……hahaha GO LAKERS kobe IS FAR FROM OVERATED! btw hahah lebron is a sore loser!! hahaha

    3. John, it was just a little out of nowhere low-brow… like you are usually better than that. Also the man was never convicted of ANYTHING. So it is just a little slanderous… there is evidence on both sides. Reports have had friends of hers saying she was bragging about it a day after the incident.

She bragged about it and joked about it…
      http://wendyista.blogspot.com/2009/06/kobe-bryants-alleged-rape-victim.html

      Odd right?

I have no opinion about the case, but I am just saying it doesnt sound fair.

    4. Hey Mickey,

It’s not low brow… rape it.

He admits that he NOW realizes she didn’t consent. But somehow he didn’t realize at the time? Like I said… maybe he should have called his wife to ask.

    5. John—

He said he understands how she FEELS it wasn’t consensual. This is ethics stuff they bring up during college orientation.

A girl can FEEL 1. Physically intimidated 2. Pressure by status 3. Unable to back out after initiating intimacy (she consensually kissed him for 5 minutes before the incident)4. Under the influence (doesn’t apply here) 5. In a relationship with her rapist (doesn’t apply here). She may have said absolutely nothing, but can be ethically considered rape for the above reasons. A man can rape his wife, and she may not say something or say no at first but speak up because she feels intimidation physically or mentally.

Again, I have no opinion about whether or not she was raped because 1. The multiple guys angle 2. The supposed bragging 3. Her previous mental health issues. The only things I know is that she had sex with Kobe and it was rough.

The wife thing is completely different. He cheated on his wife. If you said, “Quicker than Lakers fans forgave Kobe for infidelity (with probable rape to boot)” still different than what you said.

Also bigsampson your comments below show why people can’t have reasoned arguments. She was ugly? That is not a point in the least bit.

I was just trying to moderate the vitriol John I am sure you can understand that.

    6. I’d admit it too if it got someone to shut up. Go on spending time proclaiming my innocence in a civil trial or admit I see why someone thinks i was wrong and be done with it?

Also if sex is 95 percent consensual and during the last 5 percent a female says stop, taking back her consent, then that can be seen as rape. Personally I wouldn’t want any disputes so I’d stop. If someone stopped a minute after they should have, I don’t think that is rape but i see how someone could see it that way.

  10. I thought they were remaking the actual movie that had Pee Wee Herman as a vampire and not taking the Whedon TV series as their source material so why would they reach out to him?

  11. I must say, I’m one of the howling outraged fans.
The Kuzui’s are jumping on the Twilight cash cow and not thinking about the people who would see this.
I don’t think they realise that Twilight is entirely different to Buffy and just because it involves vampires doesn’t make them equal.
Although high five for Joss for sticking his finger up to them.

  12. These days, Hollywood keeps on making remakes and prequels of everything. I am sure this movie will be made since it’s following the current trend.
