Land Of The Lost Sucks – And Getting Trounced At Box Office
I’ll be putting my Land of the Lost review up a little later this evening, but I can tell you right now the film absolutely sucks. There was actually a fair amount of buzz that they hit it out of the park with this film a little while ago…. well… all that buzz has disappeared right quick.
There was also some early talk that this film could end up finishing in the top 5 as far as box office draw goes for the summer. Considering the major blockbusters this summer offers I always thought that was a little ambitious. Well… forget top 5. It may not get top 20. Friday’s box office numbers are in and Land of the Lost only made about $7 million compared to UP (in it’s second weekend) at about $13 million and The Hangover (brilliant movie, I’ll also be posting my review of this one later as well) at about $16 million.
Word of mouth is only going to hurt Land of the Lost and if I had to take a guess I’d say it’s going to end up being the flop of the summer. It deserves to flop too.

I was actually looking forward to this film(b/c of the nastolgia factor), but after hearing that the humor is more immature than that in “Transformers”…I’m just gonna say “Screw this film”.
Just saw this movie at the drive-in last night and my family and I never thought it would ever end. Good thing the second movie was worth putting up with Will Ferrell, who has got to be one of the most annoying try to be funny comics out there and this film just added to his resume of crappy movies. Wouldn’t even recommend waiting for this one to come out on DVD, save your money. This Movie Really S**ks!!!
I was shocked that it tanked. I thought little kids would be dying to see that thing, but thankfully, people took the kiddos to Up instead.
John, I’d really like to know your thoughts on Will Ferrell’s shtick now. It is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO tired. You talk about Michael Cera being one-note (agreed), but Will Ferrell is an even bigger offender in my book. I’m sick of this guy, and it looks like the public is starting to turn on him, too. His last few flicks haven’t done major business.
The movie isn’t kid friendly, it has drug references and sexual humor, and it supposed to be based off a kids show.
O RLY?!!!
They promoted this thing to kids, didn’t they? Oh, that’s messed up.
Vic over at Screen Rant did an article about it:
http://screenrant.com/parental-warning-land-lost-kidfriendly-vic-12203/
I’m surprised that some of you are surprised that this film sucks ass! Really? The same crap from the same people (actors) over and over? I’m guessing you all thought Year One would’ve been funny too? I hope this movie becomes the beginning of the end of Will and his comedy. He’s better at the dramatic stuff (I think) and would have a better future there.
I’m not shocked that it sucked. I’m shocked that it TANKED. Sucky, shitty films make money all the time.
Not a real shock to me, it didn’t look funny in the least from what I saw with the trailers. I’m starting to think maybe Ferrel has lost it. Step Brothers was ok, Semi-Pro sucked, and now this looks like another steaming pile.
The Hangover, now that was a great movie. I highly recommend spending your $10 on that, haven’t seen a movie that I laughed for a majority of it.
I love it when movies like this flop. Gives me hope.
Damn…I like Will Ferrel too.
Thanks for the heads up…I’ll skip.
Im just going to this movie , it looks like fun and Ferrell is a dry madef*cker. I dont listen to newsparts like this , John you almost dont like anything. Dont give me some reply back from you do because you bloody give negative shit to everything. I should see The Anniversary not do be a sucky movie, than you may speak again.
Hey Kevin,
Are you just willfully ignorant or just stupid?
You say I give EVERYTHING a negative review? Ok…let’s look at the last 10 movies I reviewed:
UP – Positive Review
NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 2 – Positive Review
STAR TREK – Positive Review
FIGHTING – Negative Review
STATE OF PLAY – Positive Review
CRANK 2 – Positive Review
FAST AND FURIOUS – Positive Review
ADVENTURELAND – Negative Review
MONSTERS VS ALIENS – Positive Review
I LOVE YOU MAN – Positive Review
So out of the last 10 films I reviewed I gave negative reviews to TWO. Yup… you sure are smart.. I give negative reviews to everything. What an idiot.
i would say that night at the museum was a negative review, you gave it a 5, thats not positive
also you said fast & furious was terrible in every way imaginable but its fun, so your saying its a bad movie but liked it
Hey Slumdog.
A movie gets either a positive or negative review. I rate my movies from 1-10. Therefore the dividing line between positive and negative is 5. Anything over that is positive, anything under it is negative.
And yes, F&F failed at MANY things… but it succeeded in entertaining me and that’s one of the most important things and so I gave it a positive grade.
All movies are subjective, but I passed it.
aright thanx for clearin that up.
btw, since you didnt review wolverine, T4, and angels and demons what would you give them from 1-10?
TECHNICALLY John, if your possible review scores don’t include a zero, or a partial number less than 1, there is no whole number central score possible, therefore 1,2,3,4,5 would be negative and 6,7,8,9,10 would be positive, in order to effectively half the possible scores. Sorry, that’s just the Stats nerd in me talking. Also, was Danny McBride at least good in this?
I was going to point out what McBain said, but he did that already.
Also, I second the request from Slumdog on Wolverine, T4, and Angels & Demons.
Stae of Play is a good one , Up is also good . You give positive reviews to movie that are good at the point. But you also have to make big of deals with reviews. Also with the Star Trek , a extra pusher to pick mistakes from the movie :{. Little bit pefetic isnt it. Night At the museam 2 – a 5.5 not really positive hé. Fast and Furious you pissed over everything and you still call it a positive review. And always with the animated bullcrap, thats a easy reviewtarget, Rodney does a better job at it. I come here for 2 years already and you give a lot of negative reviews threw theys years. Focker Out !
anything over 5 is positive, even 5.5
Also from your little list , you only pick the most movies that got al the good reviews at other sites, Rodney has to do it with Terminator 4 and Dragonball Evolution.
You are an idiot. You said I give nothing but negative reviews… I prove you wrong showing the last 10 reviews I gave 8 were positive ones. Can you even speak in coherent sentences?
Uh oh John, I think this guy’s on to you, you’re in trouble……
I’m totally and completely kidding, by the way, I don’t know what the fuck that guy just said. I wouldn’t worry about replying to this guy’s comments next time, if I were you, unless they’re as expertly planned and articulate as this latest doozy.
On another note, if it (Land of the Lost) is truly bad (it looks BAD, but I have not seen it) I’m very happy it is not doing well. It’s not everyday that box office take accurately reflects the quality of the product (in my humble opinion). Here’s to it happening more often.
kevin who are you to say that he gives everything bad reviews, the last 3 movies he gave bad reviews to were fighting(mentioned above)adventurland(also mentioned)and the wrestler. so in the past 7 months he only gave 3 films bad reviews, yea thats real negative
Kevin, those are the last 10 movies John actually reviewed. I don’t see your point.
I “had to” review T4 and Dragonball because I got to see those films before John did. The only thing I had to do was review them, and neither of them got a positive review from me.
Your blind assessment is that John’s word cannot be taken as legitimate because he “hates everything” while he has made it pretty clear that is just ignorant to think.
what’s wrong with this guy? why does he even come here? just to trash john and his opinions? don’t like the movie blog? don’t read it!!!
The trailers for this movie look painfully cheap and unfunny. The 100 million they spent aren’t showing up on the screen. I’m sure it was purposefully done this way, but I don’t want to pay 10 bucks to watch a movie that cheesy looking.
sssweet.
im a big step brothers fan but i can really do wihtout ferrel, yes he’s funny and I like him but he’s fallen off in the movie buzz department. This could have been a launching vehicle for Danny McBride though, East Bound and South is the funniest show ever and HOTROD is a great movie, but it doesnt look like that might happen. “I LIKE TO PARTY”.
eastbound and down is fuckin gold…best comedy sow ever. cant wait or season 2. im hoping mcbride blows up, he was gold in tropic thunder and pineapple express
Hangover is beating UP in the early estimates, 48 M to 44 M but you guys are suprised that Land Of The Lost got that low??? For real? I was guessing 25 M but This doesn’t surprise me, I’m gonna see it and I expect to hate it
The old Flop-a-roo eh? Is anyone honestly surprised? Or are we all smugly thinking ‘damn right’. I’ll tell you what would be a surprise to my face….GI Joe NOT sucking.
I just saw it John and I agree it’s is pretty bad. I would agrue that this is the defintion of a Hollywood BOMB. When the studio watched the dalies they had to know this was going badly. It is JUST pointless. I laughed maybe 3 times. The truth is I didn’t want to laugh as I hated the fact that they made this into a comedy. With that budget it could have been played straight( with a real actor and not Ferrell) and been a good film. As it it just lays there on screen. It also felt like three hrs instead of 90 minutes. I wanted like it as I watched the show when I was really young but this film is a BAD summer product. Amazingly Roger Ebert liked it as well as Devin over at Chud.
chuck
That’s cuz Ferrel is the most overrated comedian/actor of his generation. The guy isn’t funny. Thankfully, more people are realizing this.
Umm…that’s not what’s going on.
He made a bad movie, that hardly equates to “more people realizing” something. I don’t think he’s the funniest person on the planet either, but given his track record on SNL alone, saying he’s not funny is just inane.
He is very funny Jim. However just like that joke that made you laugh so hard til your beverage of choice invaded your nasal passage, the 30th time you hear it, its just not funny anymore.
Ferrell is just tired. Its the same funny all the time, and its not impressing me any, and I am not the only one.
If he is still funny to you, then great. Enjoy. I won’t deny a man his laughter. But this criticism is hardly anything new.
That Kevin is a real moron, John. I guess he didn’t watch your Up preview. Cause if he did, he would know that you gave it a PERFECT 10 OUTA 10. So don’t worry bout him. What a moron.
I haven’t seen this movie, but it seems like it’s having problems finding it’s target audience. Too goofy for adults, too much mature humor for kids. I love the original and would like to see this, if only for the original cast cameos that I heard about. But not sure if I want to blow 10 dollars when I could see Star Trek again. I might wait for netflix.
i completely agree with u, it was suckish considering what i was expecting. I could have directed it better.
WTF this movie was fucking great dont listen to john if ur a will fan ur goin to love this
yo john pass that shit ur smoking
I’ve been watching the original tv series on the SCIFI Channel Land of the Lost Marathons and I wish they could have tapped into that a bit more in the movie. A mysterious storyline that captivates with the new comedy mixed in would have been better than just being chased by t-rex and very weak sleestack conflict. The comedy has some funny parts (some tried to be funny but were not) but why can’t they make it have comedy with a really captivating story? Wait until the movie is on tv to see it.
Also, I want to say I had a strong feeling this movie was going to suck after watching the trailer. But, I am such a huge fan of the old tv series I had to see it, just in case it was cool like the tv series I did not want to miss it. I am as disappointed as I predicted I would be. So disappointed in fact, that it inspired me to type this blog which something I do not normally do.
OH DARN.
So much for my hopes for an “Electra Woman and DynaGirl” or “Sigmond & The Sea Monster” flicks because now Hollywood will stay away from all things Marty & Kroft…
Seriously though, I never had any high hopes for this version of ‘Land Of The Lost’. I suspected they were simply going to poke fun at the 70s camp Saturday Morning show, and that they don’t know who the target audience is. It’s pretty bad if they reach out to my generation who grew up watching the show…who will take the kids/nieces/nephews to the show…only to cover their ears.
How much did this sucker cost again? With those half ass FX? Was that budget for Will Farrell’s wardrobe?
Darren, as a nostalgic fan of the original I would say that just in creating this movie the way they did they already stayed away from anything Marty & Kroft.
This took the basic premise and then changed pretty much everything about it including its target demographic.
If they do approach any of those franchises, I would suspect they would do so with this as their learning curve.
Just sayin.
Actually walked out of this 20 minutes in, I saw where this was going, glad I made the right choice.
What could be expected from “Land of the Lost” but ridiculous humor? It’s Will Ferrell. Was I the only sane man on Earth before this came out and exposed you all to the ugly childish truth that is Will Ferrell’s horrible shtick?
Although I did like him in “Stranger than Fiction.”
He played an actual person.
Reading this comment page was more entertaining than that movie.
awww shucks…was looking forward to it. May still see it in the cinemas to see what the fuss, or rather ‘lack of fuss’ is all about.
i have to say wtf are old these older people…like a generation before me are thinking…your so hyped to see a movie off of one of the worst shows ever….you think just cause it was awesome when your 6 doesnt mean it will kick ass when your 40…..if that was the case i would be waiting hardcore for a ELECTRIC CO. movie or maybe a fully life like CARE BEAR movie with stoner humor?
this movie was doomed for failure before it left the croft library.
Only because it didn’t stick to what people DID find entertaining about it to begin with.
Clearly they were thinking like you were in presuming there was no entertainment quality to the original shows, and changed it to appeal to a completely different market. And still failed.
Land of the Lost wasn’t as funny as the Hangover (which fully deserves to be #1 this weekend), but it is a pretty funny movie.
I went in expecting nothing out of Land of the Lost, and I came out pleasantly surprised at how absurdly funny it is (as in it’s absurdity makes it funny). The movie works once you realize the characters are all in on the joke. They even spell it out at one point when Danny McBride asks them why they aren’t freaking out. Roger Ebert’s review is pretty dead on.
The flick is great when McBride and Ferrel are ad-libbing, and adequate the rest of the movie. It would easily be a 5 or 6 out of 10.
As far as UP goes, it is an amazing movie, but a movie that really doesn’t lend itself to multiple viewings, as it was one of the most depressing movies I have seen many years. I know Disney in tragedy, but usually finds a happy ending, but neither the stories the Kid nor the old man end happily. My friend and I came out of UP joking that we were both ready to go slit our wrists, and my wife cried just talking about the movie for days afterward. UP is a great movie, but I go to movies for happiness and escape, not depression.
Hunter Stephenson of /Film gave it an 8/10, haha.
Because film is subjective.
Why is that funny?
Will Ferrell needs to stop. He is only good in Adam McKay films.
Most of Will Ferrell’s latest work has sucked – lame characters and sports movies.
He should come up with some new character that is actually funny, like Mugato which was some funny Dr.Evil shit.
yes this movie sucks because the execs. who
put this together compeletly ignored
the original appeal and lesson learning of this saturday morning tv show.
yes maybe the fx in the original show were not all that great but it was the 70’s and yes maybe the theme song may have been a little corny for most or some people by todays standards (i personally liked it so sue me)
but i felt it was a good sat. morning show
better than whats on now not much for the
kids to see on sat.mornings these days
as far as the movie goes i have not nor will
i not see it because of will “still doing the
same schick that i’ve done in my other movies
ferrell” this guy is not funny not at all
not to mention cameos by the orginal cast was cut out and sid and marty kroft what were these guys thinking when they ok this film
They were thinking “no matter how well it does at the Boxoffice, the money they paid up front for the rights is more than we got paid for its entire TV run”
Thats what they were thinking.
just saw it yesterday, it had its moments, lots of good one liners and definitly worth every penny of the six bucks I paid to see it. It did feel long, but that was only after the credits started to roll and I checked the time. I give it a 6, if you have nothing better to do and can get to it before noon, handle it.
Of course this movie sucks….and once again this is what happens when you take a series only a certain few remember and change it into something else.
I guess nobody posting here remembers “The Honeymooners” remake…
Oh and John, just because somebody called you out doesn’t mean you need to act like a twat, even if he was wrong.
So A+ on seeing a movie that anybody with a brain knew was going to suck and a huge F- for lack of maturity and tact.
Wrong.
This isn’t an intrinsically bad idea, they just happened to make a horrible movie.
To state that a Land of the Lost remake is automatically destined to be garbage is silly.
Wrong.
It is a bad idea just like Speed Racer, The Honeymooners, Lost In Space was a bad idea.
Reason: Most movie-goer’s don’t really care about 20+ year old series that were easily forgrotten 5 years after they stopped airing.
It should be more than obvious to anybody with gray matter that taking a 34 year old children’s series that has a meger handful of fans and twisting it around to where it’s not for kids anymore is doomed to failure.
Oh and next time you respond to me, at least have the courtesy to not put words in my mouth, i never said:
“Land of the Lost remake is automatically destined to be garbage”
I said that taking a series that few remember and changing it into something else sucks, and evidence suggests that this is true.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out by watching the trailers that this isn’t the Saturday morning Land of the Lost we all grew up with, know and love. If we ignore these kinds of movies do you think they will go away and stop getting made? This classic Saturday morning show deserved better. Will Ferrell would be better suited playing the voice of Grape Ape in a CGI adaptation of Grape Ape and not the father / role model of persons (Marshall family) trapped in another time / world. It just goes to show you how far we have actually gotten away from family values or basically values of any kind. Back then you had caring, concerning and thoughtful shows that actually try to teach us something to the crude, unfunny garbage most Ferrell movies represent today.
I had my reservations about seeing this movie as I loved the TV series as a child! A comedy and Will Ferrell, I thought would ruin the movie for sure! I see almost all reviews are bad. However, I was pleasently surprised. I really enjoyed the movie! Not only did LOTL stay true to the series and the characters in the series, but it added bits of adult humor that made it enjoyable for adult audiences also!
Land of the lost and was hilarious i mean there are so many funny parts in the movie…sing life after love…the matt lauer beginning and ending….the trip scene…talking about eating chaka….the beef between the dinasour the list goes on….anyone who thinks different just has it out for will…ur haters with no sense of genious humor that goes for rodney and jon specially
