Sean Penn To Take Break From Acting – Screws Three Stooges In The Process

Love him or hate him, you’ve got to admit Sean Penn is one hell of an actor. Clint Eastwood says he’s the best in the business. But if you know anything about Penn you also know that his personal life always seems to be in a state of total disaster. The man is no stranger to drama.

Anyway, it looks like Sean Penn has announced that he’s going to take a break from acting for a while to sort of get his life together a bit. Can’t really blame a guy for doing that. But the unfortunate thing about the timing of this is that he’s supposed to be one of the leads in the new “The Three Stooges” movie getting ready to start shooting in August (with Jim Carrey as Curly and Benicio del Toro as Moe). The folks over at The Hollywood Reporter give us this:

It is understood that the two-time Oscar-winning actor-writer-director is taking a leave from his Hollywood career for personal reasons. It’s unclear how long the absence could last, though sources have said up to a year. Peter and Bobby Farrelly have spent the better part of a decade trying to get “Stooges” off the ground, and in March they pulled off a major casting coup: Penn as Larry, with Jim Carrey as Curly and Benicio del Toro as Moe. Now MGM and the Farrellys, who wrote the script and are slated to direct, need to decide whether they will wait for Penn or seek to find a new actor. Time and availability are the issues: “Stooges” was eyeing a late August start date, and MGM has slotted it for a 2010 release. If the studio waits, it could risk losing Carrey and del Toro.

Man that totally sucks for the Farrelly brothers. Penn, Carey and del Toro would have made one hell of a cast and I was really looking forward to seeing what kind of chemistry those three could pull off.

So who could you see playing Larry with those two other guys?
