Terminator 5 Set In Modern Day London?

By John - June 6, 2009 - 16:39 America/Montreal

Ok, let me first say that I’m not convinced there is going to be a Terminator 5. Oh I know they’ve PLANNED for another Terminator movie and that Christian Bale is signed on… but that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen. Terminator: Salvation didn’t do the type of box office business that they were hoping for, and word of mouth hasn’t been it’s ally. I not saying there WON’T be another Terminator movie… I’m just saying don’t totally count on it.

With that being said, there was a rumor out a few weeks ago that McG (does that come with a McHappy Meal?) has plans for another time travel plot device for his next Terminator movie that would see John Conor coming back in time. Well… there is another rumor out today that seems to back that first one up. BleedingCool says the following:

I hear from industry sources that yet-to-be-named Terminator 5, the sequel to Terminator: Salvation, will be set in London in the year 2011, with a time-travelling John Connor (Christian Bale).

Like I said before, this is consistent with earlier rumors so there could be something with it. Personally, I really don’t care if there is another Terminator movie or not. I was sort of let down by Terminator Salvation and I never bought Christian Bale as John Conor. Another time travel plot seems like a bit of a waste too. Oh well… like everything else let’s wait and see.

I don’t care for another Terminator film either, but why not keep it set during the future war?

    • R1ZE says:

Yup. I’m looking forward to another one, but since the BO hasn’t been too great it’s likely that they’ll take some time off inbetween production. Terminator is a hot established ip and they won’t abondon it – like it or not there will eventually be a T5. It’ll just be with a different creative team. Logically the next one should either be in 2029 or somewhere inbetween, so it wont hurt if we let Bale and everyone else age a bit if we have to.

  2. HDpunk says:

why did bale have to use his batman voice in terminator?

    • Edward says:

I say wait for the directors cut of Salvation before you really judge this movie. It was edited for both time and content to reach a broader audience…

Wow, that was stupid. Terminator 2 was really long, and rated R and it was a GROUND BREAKING BLOCKBUSTER EXTRAVAGANZA!!! Perhaps the producers of Terminator 5 should think about that.

  3. Louis says:

From a profitability standpoint, there cannot be and there will not be another Terminator film. Warner Bros should be focusing on a third Batman film if they really want Bale to become their next cash cow.

    • AARON says:

      Exactly! Besides I have theory..

I think Inception is a cover up for The Dark Knight Returns, I’m assuming Nolan would call it that

    • Matt S says:

      Aaron,

I think you’re SO wrong personally. I don’t think all these actors who have been attached to Inception would just go along and pretend they’re in a fake movie. Unless, Leonardo DiCaprio is gonna play Robin, Marion Cotillard as Cat Woman, and Ellen Page as Bat Girl (if that’s the case… NOOOOOOO!!!!).

I’m very happy to hear that Nolan is doing a new film, rather than a sequel, I liked TDK a lot, but I’m not burning for a sequel right yet. Plus Memento is my favorite Nolan flick and Inception sounds like it might be a mind trip like that one.

Another note, I couldn’t care less if they make a new Terminator, but the one draw to Salvation, for me, was the future war.

    • alfie says:

      aaron, trust me, its not.

    • “Marion Cotillard as Cat Woman”

While inception isn’t Bats3, the above does have some appeal to me. Marion is an award winning actress, isn’t that bad looking at all, and the brief notion that Catwoman could be played as an international thief/anti-herone (as to explain Cotillard’s accent should it have been a possibility) would be along the “out of box thinking” we have been conditioned to.

      Too bad it isn’t so.
      Wishful thinking.

  4. AARON says:

I thought Terminator Salvation was mediocre on all levels, except the fantastic action and effects, but this doesn’t sound to good. T:S did horrible. It’s only got 100 something mill and it did cost 200, WB can kiss their hopes of earning the production budget goodbye

  5. mixmastajb says:

for god’s sake! No more Terminator movies. All it does is cheapen the Awesomeness that is the first 2 movies. Please! let’s not forget what the first 2 movies are in this mess

    • Slushie Man says:

The first movie was horribly mediocre. The second is the only great Terminator movie. Actually, I’ll even venture to say T3 and T4 were even better then T1 was.

    • Viglin says:

Havent seen no 4, but no way in hell was no 3 better then the first movie.
      Whatever your smoking….past it around.

    • Jake says:

The original Terminator was cool and intense. In a way, more so than T2. And more than that, it’s a renowned classic.

  6. bigsampson says:

i liked this last movie….it was better then part 3 imo by alot but it did not have what 1 & 2 had by a lot as well….i think most of the bitching about this movie stems from it not bieng as good as part 2…..well get over that cause part 2 was just plain awesome…this movie imo wasnt bad by any means…just i think people would rather not have had the batman voice….if he could have just acted like he acted in the infamous freak out tape session then john connor would have been perfect.

    • Matt Keith says:

I enjoyed “Terminator Salvation”, but the action was what saved the film(IMO) and Worthington’s performance.

  7. tzaylor says:

Expectations are nearly everything when it comes to casting final judgement on a movie. Sounds like most people were let down by this one.

I liked this movie a lot, but I’ve never been a huge fan of any of them.

I hear that it’s made around 125 mil including worldwide. Hopefully they get enough to do another one. I don’t really care if Bale is in it or not but I still think there could be more fun left in this franchise.

  8. anthony says:

Hopefully Terminator 5 is the final battle between skynet and john conner and make it so john conner finds out skynet has his mothers brain and explain ALL the movies and everyhting that happened. Just need a finale show down!

  9. Brian D says:

So everyone has been fighting and dying to make sure John is alive and well in the future to lead mankind to victory and he bails on them to go back in time? Will they now establish that people can travel forwards and backwards in time? That would be lame and make things very complicated.

    • Matt Keith says:

I read that McG is also planning on sending HKs back in time as well….I guess they have to explain how a machine is able to go back in time w/o living tissue.

    • Rodney says:

Who says Connor has to go back to the future?

We are told that Connor was the leader that lead Mankind in its resistance against the machines. No one said the Humans won, nor did they say that Connor lived forever.

Perhaps he does what he can in that time, names a successor and then goes back to 2011 to stop the time travelling HKs.

    • Matt Keith says:

“It had no choice. Skynet’s defense grid was smashed. WE’D WON. Taking out Connor then would have made no difference”

    • Matt Keith says:

I forgot to add that was a quote from Kyle Reese from T1.

    • Brian D says:

The Tech-Com Human Resistance destroys Skynet. Then John Connor sends Kyle Reese back in time with the time travel device deep within Skynet HQ.

  10. bcreek says:

God I hope that if they do T5, they don’t set it in the modern day. There were only two reasons I was excited about T:S. (1) Christian Bale (2) The futuristic setting. Though I fall into the minority of people who thought T:S rocked, the box office numbers don’t lie. However, I think that DVD sales also have a strong influence on whether a studio releases a sequel or not, and IMO I think that T:S might do really good on that front. I’m optimistic that they’ll make a sequel, and lets just hope that they learned from what mistakes they made in this one if they do. Here’s my Top 10 list of ways I think they could potentially improve the next film if they decide to make it.

    (1) Keep it set within the future.
    (2) Make John Conor the badass that we’ve been waiting for.
    (3) Slap Christian Bale every time he goes into Batman mode.
    (4) Keep the action high, but include more dialogue.
    (5) Come up with a total, HOLY SHIT!!! ending.
    (6) Don’t give the project to McG.
    (7) Bring James Cameron on board as a producer or director.
    (8) Make it R-rated!!!
    (9) Don’t give the entire plot away and the only interesting thing within your story away in advertising. Yes, I’m looking at you Marcus Wright with exposed robo-torso.

    And finally….

    (10) Completely rip of the LOTR Battle of Helms Deep, but instead of an army of 10,000 urukai, let it be 10,000 T-800s with fucking lasers and shit. I know that it sound completely fanboyish and completely uncreative, but if they want to bring people into the theaters, then that is the type of spectacle they will need both promise and deliver.

Let me know what you guys think.

    • Shane Razey says:

All I have to say to you bcreek:
      .
      Ditto!
      .
That is why I went with hope to see Salvation. I pray T5 delivers.

  11. dax says:

there will be NO terminator 5.
Terminator Salvation put an end to the terminator franchise. it didn’t live up to expectations of the studio. I think there’s no more story left in the terminator saga.

    • Rodney says:

There was no story left to tell when they made part 3, or 4. They still did it.

    • bcreek says:

Sorry Dax, but I have to disagree. I think there is still allot of story left in this franchise, it’s just a matter of creative writers bringing them to the surface. As far as how a fifth movie would play out, I can’t really say, but that’s why I’m not a screen-writer. I personally wish that they had killed John Conor in the T:S, and then at the very end show his wife going into labor, and when the “male” baby is born, she names him after his dad. Basically insinuating that John Conor’s son is the actual John Conor who is humanities savior. Of coarse if they took this approach, they couldn’t bring C. Bale on for another one, who was without a doubt one of the main selling points to this movie.

  12. While I liked Mad Max 4/Transformers 1 1/2 …WHOOPS I mean Terminator Salvation to a point, I find the entire concept of Terminator 5 going back in time to London, much less Fiji or Finland….wherever, is lame.

So, Connor himself goes back in time. How does he get back?
He is supposed to send Reese and one reprogrammed Terminator back first, right? As far as “after” sending them back? The war is over!

    ??????????
    ??????????
    ??????????

oh wait i get it. you were in London 2030 and found a tube of unused toothpaste. You went back to 2011 to find the toothbrush!

    Eureka!

  13. Lawrence says:

Terminator Salvation was a huge letdown.
I’d rather they’d put a closure to this series.

  14. AARON says:

Just a theory guys. Anyway, was it just me or were the events at the Sky Net HQ disappointing?

  15. Thos says:

Enough with the time travel already… can’t someone read “Terminator: Burning Earth” (Now comics) and realize THAT is the next and final movie?

  16. alonewolf1 says:

terminator for me ended with part3
the first two were good the third was a little weak because judgement day was not stopped, sarah
connor was killed off or rather we are told
in the plot of the movie she died early on in
john’s life still not to bad of a filck

i have not seen t4 but by looking at the
trailer and reading about the movie a little
bit didn’t really find it interesting about
the direction there were going with this movie

i mean you have a terminator hybrid who doesn’t
know that he is a terminator hybrid …really?
and no arnold instead a obivously looking cgi
    camo of him …really?

and reese who was a grown man in the first film
is now a little kid in this film …really?

sorry for making this sound like a snl weekend update skit but i think it should be treated as
    such

and now theres talk of a part five, should not be done unless you get the real terminator to be a
part of it that means wait for arnie to finish
being gov. first, then he can slip on the shades
and leather kick butt attire for t5

    • Matt Keith says:

Arnold is tooo old to play the terminator again.

    • Mladen says:

Agreed with Matt. Arnold is too old to play this sort of character. I’m not suggesting he’s too old to act, I just dont think he can bring the same menace to the role anymore. He’d mostly be playing it for laughs…

The other option is to bring him back as a human scientist who modelled the android off of himself in some way (like Bishop’s appearance at the end of Alien3 or in Alien vs Predator)

  17. leeloo says:

maybe he goes back in time to try to stop mcg from spoiling the whole damn movie before they even start filming it.

  18. Dryer says:

The fact a fifth film is being discussed is cause for panic. WB is responding to your pathetic clamoring for more fan friendly fare, and it when it happens it aint gonna be what you had envisioned whilst laying in bed. Infact it’ll be worse, because it tries to include everything so to please everyone; leaving in its wake less appreciation for the previous films because the experience is tainted with retarded explinations which didnt need to be explored. So why exactly do you “fans” of a series continue to promote such crudely tiresome ventures.

  19. Jim says:

Just saw it…underwhelming is the best single word I can think of to describe it.
Also, a serious continuity error with the timeline.

In the first film, Reese said the T800’s were “new” , more or less coming online just before he goes back in time, but in this film he’s just a teenager and T800’s are just emerging. Tsk tsk….

This film would have been better if it was set when Reese was older, and climaxing with him beng sent back. Very, VERY bad decisions were made with this film.

    • Walker says:

Ok, people need to check facts before posting.

      1. TS has made over 200 Million worldwide, and its only been released over 1 week outside the US. It was, by far, the No 1 movie internationally. Its box office success / failure is still to be determined.

      2. To alonewolf, Kyle Reese is younger in this movie because it is set in 2018, and the Kyle Reese we saw in T1 was sent back in time from the year 2029, when he was 11 YEARS OLDER!

    • Watcher says:

Jim, this is not a contimuity error – Reese doesn’t say they are brand new OR just coming online – he just says that they are better models than the T600s which were easy to spot… don’t forget, the T800s are only prototypes in 2017, and who knows how long it was before they got superceded by a later model?? Could have been as late as 2029 and Reese might not have known about them before one was sent back to kill John Connor in T2…

The film is set in 2017, so of course Reese is 12 years younger and of course it makes sense that at this time the T800s are just coming into existence then…

  20. Jim says:

    Uhh…what?
I said I WAS UNDERWHELMED, PERIOD.
I don’t need to check anywhere before posting my own take on the film.

    • Walker says:

well, of course you dont, my post was obviously directed at the people that are complaining for reasons that are simply not true.

  21. RansomBetty says:

Personally I wish they would have stuck with the kill em all ending for T4. Then you get closure and the fuck you that people still watching Terminator movies deserve!

  22. Vern says:

Wait a minute – what the fuck is a McHappy Meal?

  23. JD says:

First off people who said this movie sucked and or wasnt as good as expected need to go back to watching High School Musical and leave the big boys/girls movies alone. Being a person who was alive and watched the first one when it came out (as a lot of viewers are/where) gave me a different perspective. As a kid watching the first one i wanted nothing more then anything to see the future wars more then the present struggles. But with John just only being conceived i knew there would be several Terminators before we caught up in the future conflict. What im trying to say its an evolving story and not so much as a stand alone blockbuster. If you have been following the story from the beginning then you should have enjoyed this one and want to see another. And if you havent rent the the others but dont just watch t…….ahhh never mind, I thought it was a great movie.

  24. EB says:

the idea of haveing artficial inteligence challenge and instill fear, pushes the “human sole” to its limits showing new heights of the human spirit. The human spirit is (in my opinion)a link an invisible but maturnal link between humans. it grows, it “lives” in a sence an extention of our “true” selves; our true selves meaning out superiorer intelictual bond our purpose to live or reasons to survive. Machines don’t have this connection only a directive to “kill all humans” which severs that maturnal link and being apart of that link shows your purpose to it and machines motives aren’t the same as ours. Our maturnal drive is to survive and live on, machines only live to kill and then what will their purpose be…..? we all have a purose in this world beyond our own perciption but machines will scece to exist after they goal is accomplished (sure, right) they don’t have the drive to live on……
