Could Harry Potter Beat The Dark Knight 5 Day Opening Record?

By John - July 15, 2009 - 08:32 America/Montreal

Ok… so I saw Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince last night. I’m not thrilled with it. But I’ll give my review later tonight.

The magic can even be felt by us common Muggle folk. The highly anticipated sixth installment of the Harry Potter franchise (which will pass the James Bond franchise sometime this month to become the highest grossing film franchise of all time) “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” finally opened lastt at midnight.

I say “finally” because as most of you know, the film was originally supposed to open almost a year ago in September of 2008, but was pushed back by Warner Bros. which at the time set off a massive backlash amongst fans of the franchise, a backlash that quickly faded into nothing and then turned once again into excitement as the new release date approached.

The question is: How big will Harry Potter open? A few weeks ago, Transformers 2 opened with the second largest 5 day opening in film history (just a hair behind “The Dark Knight”). But according to tracking sources, Harry Potter has already sold out more midnight shows than the robots in disguise did.

Could “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” surpass not only Transformers 2, but The Dark Knight as well? The ticket selling trends seem to suggest it has a legitimate chance at doing just that.

So bottom line here fellow muggles… if you’re going to see Potter this week… get on your brooms and get over to the theater early, because the class at Hogwarts will fill up fast.

That wouldn’t suprise me if it did b/c I have heard nothing, but good things about(aside from what you said).

  2. Given the fact that the Potter films are winding down, and that all the previous Potter films have made hand over fist, I’d say that yes, Half-Blood Prince stands a very good chance of besting last year’s record of The Dark Knight.

    It will be close.

Meanwhile, WB execs smile either way.

  3. Jeremy K. says:

I think it has a good chance at beating both.

With that said, were you not thrilled because overall your not thrilled with the Harry Potter franchise? I know you said enjoyed the last one, but before that they never really caught on with you. If you looked at it from the perspective of an average Harry Potter fan, or even a die hard Harry Potter fan, would you be more thrilled about what you saw? Just curious.

I’m going to have to try to avoid your later review of the movie until after I see it. Don’t want to risk cloudy my viewing pleasure this weekend with thoughts and comparisons from your review during the movie. That can be so distracting some times. :D

  4. algoresnuts says:

mentioning transformers in the same sentence as the dark knight seems absolutely wrong. transformers is a terrible movie. just awful.

  5. Matt Keith says:

    John,

Did the PG rating hurt the film?.

  6. RAF says:

I think it will. The theater I went to last night started with 3 showings and ended up with 8 midnight showings for the film and they were all sold out! So it will either beat it or come really close to The Dark Knights record. I’ve to agree with you I wasn’t too thrilled with it either, but I will wait until your review to share why.

    • Jeremy K. says:

Yes or No, did you read the book and your disappointments come from the changes they made for the movie? That can be answered without getting into reviews. Just curious because I heard they made two fairly big changes.

    • RAF says:

Yes, they left out a lot of things from the book. I felt that the attack on the Weasleys house was not necessary at all. They left out a lot of the characters from they previous movie. The Minister, Voldemort, Madam Rosmerta, Dobby, Kreacher. And they rushed the movie; I felt that it was really fast paced and they left out a lot details that really help you understand what the story is about. I know that the movie can’t be exactly like the book, but they didn’t really go into detail about what the Half-blood Prince was. I still think it was a good movie, I just expected a little more than what they gave.

  7. Joe says:

It should. Theater I went to last night… had almost all of their 23 screens having a showing of HP6. and judging by the massive line of people that went out the theater at 11pm before the first showing… they all sold out.

Plus the other theater by my house sold out all 7 showings before i even knew there was a midnight showing of HP last night (i thought they did these things weds night?)

  8. bill says:

Theater in my town had 15 showings at midnight, all sold out, and now has it on 6 of its 16 screens so it is possible I think

  9. Phil Gee says:

If it does, we’re talking beating TDK by a million or two. Personally, I don’t think it will beat the record but it’s going to be very close.

There is no franchise like this one. EVERYBODY I know goes to see the new Harry Potter film.

  10. krazie835 says:

I really wish they get rid of Nicholas Hooper from the franchise, the music he created for the last two movies was a complete bore.

Bring back Patrick Doyle or John Williams.

  11. AARON says:

Considering it was supposed to come out last year, and the long wait, yes I believe so

  12. Jenny says:

I went last night, and I will tell you the place was packed! I looked at another theater, but online all but one showing was sold out, so we went to the closer one, and it was swarming with people. They had lines forming for people who could not find seats together so that they could wait for more screens to open up. They ended up showing it probably about fifteen minutes late because they were scrambling. The concession line was all the way across the lobby and actually going into one of the theaters!

This is a big money maker.

  13. TheDarkKnight says:

I think it will beat The Dark Knight.

The Harry Potter movies are winding down now and coming to an end the hype around these last few entries in the series will be huge.

I think what is more significant though is that Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince may break the billion dollar barrier.

Harry Potter movies always come with a lot of hype and always do well at the box office but I didn’t see this kind of hype for Phoenix of the Order and that movie went on to make 940 million dollars worldwide.

I think and hope The Half Blood Prince can break the billion dollar mark.

Having said that if this is the hype around number 6 in the series the hype for the deadly hallows is surely to be bigger.

It’d be interesting if all three movies crossed the billion dollar mark.

Either way I can’t wait for this movie to be released going to hopefully see it on Saturday in IMAX if it isn’t sold out.

  14. obi-wan kubrick says:

I had no idea Transformers 2 opened so big. I still haven’t seen it. John you should compare the major film franchises adjusted for inflation. I’m sure Bond would far out pace every other franchise.

  15. tuan says:

dont forget that this potter movie wont be in IMAX for another 2 weeks so there might be fans who wants to wait til then and that doesnt help with the numbers at all.

  16. cloud720 says:

My brother saw harry potter last night and got back at 11. I guess they started the shows around 6pm. Did they do the same for transformers?

  17. nohely says:

I went to the 12am show and had to buy my tickets 2 weeks in advance, because they were selling out for 2 theathers and a lot of people were still trying on buying some ,honestly I believe it has an extremely good chance of beating it.

  18. Dragonslayer says:

I saw it today,…and it was awesome!

  19. Israel Lopez says:

I bet you would want that john, be honest?

  20. spence says:

just read that it got the biggest midnight opening of all time, bringing in 22.2 million…

  21. alfie says:

i am a bit torn about it.i enjoyed it but it is my favorite book and they changed a lot of the things that make it my favourite.

  22. Kristina says:

The lack of IMAX screens may keep it from the record.

  23. Jasper says:

best film of the series! So awesome! Can’t wait to see it again!

  24. brian says:

    REVIEW??

  25. sapience says:
