Gerard Butler To Return For 300 Sequel?

By John - July 3, 2009 - 02:00 America/Montreal

There’s just no getting around it. 300 kicked all sort of formidable ass. The movie was not only a beautiful and faithful translation from the printed page of Frank Miller’s brilliant graphic novel, but it was also breathtaking to look at, listen too and feel.

Now as most of you know (SPOILER for the 32 of you on the planet who haven’t seen the original movie), King Leonidas dies bravely at the end of the first movie by being shot by about 4298 arrows. He’s dead… not mostly dead… not sorta dead… DEAD.

Now here’s the strange part… we all know that Frank Miller is currently working on a graphic novel sequel to 300 that, if all goes according to plan, Zack Snyder would then turn into a sequel movie. Ok sure, sounds great. But now it’s being suggested by the movie’s producer that Leonidas (played by Gerard Butler) could be brought back from the dead for the story. The good folks over at Live For Film give us this:

“Frank Miller’s working on something,” revealed producer Mark Canton when MTV spoke to him, telling them that he’s onboard to return for Snyder’s 300 sequel. “That, Zack has said.”

“Things are always looking good with ‘300,’ it’s a blessing and a gift. Zack’s a genius, and no matter where you go it’s the one movie that people around the world seem to somewhat identify with the most,” explained Canton “We’re thrilled for [a sequel]; it’ll be a blast. There’s a new Blu-Ray coming out all over again shortly, so that’s great. It’s like the gift that never stops giving.”

“[The key to the sequel] is about getting it right, you know,” the producer said of their dilemma after having killed off virtually the entire cast in the first film. “Frank is a perfectionist, and so is Zack. And I think they set the bar pretty high.” Canton had the surprising news that even Gerard Butler’s King Leonidas could be brought back from the dead. “Never assume anything; never assume anything,” he repeated when I asked if the original cast were gone for good. “It’ll be what it’ll be. But if we really do it, in this case, we have a visionary creator and a visionary filmmaker.”

Whoa… brining Leonidas back from the dead? Doesn’t that seem a little… I don’t know… Search For Spock-ish?

If (and that’s a BIG IF) this is true, I’m willing to give Miller (as a writer) the benefit of the doubt and wait to see what sort of plot device he comes up with… but I’m still a little skeptical. What do you think?

    money money money money… money!

    • Rodney says:

All films are for the money.

    • EZELL says:

Did you not here John last week no shit its for the money all films ever made are made for money or some day the people attached to it can make money.

      This will be fun.

    • spiderfreak182 says:

im aware, but i cant think of any other film that has screamed “money!” at me this much. not that im opposed to the idea of a sequel to 300, but u gotta admit, its kinda supposed to be a one-shot…

    • R1ZE says:

It’s not about money, its about a lack of creativity. Go back to the well.

  2. Johnson says:

Perhaps we’ll see Leonidas and the other 299 Spartans dineing in hell.

    • Sound Designer Dan says:

Yup. 300 II: My Dinner with Leonidas….in Hell

    • Nacho says:

      Nice!

    • Dragonslayer says:

I don’t normally like hearing things like this,…but that would be fucking awesome.

    • Andrew says:

Actually, it’d be 298, since he sent that one spartan (with one eye) back to Sparta

Sorry, just had to correct you there…

    • Geno says:

Man way to take a dump on someone’s cake there Andrew, just kidding. But yeah you are right. A sequel to 300? Miller needs to start working with Robert Rodriguez and have Sin City 2 come out dammit! Not work on some zombie spartan crusade to kick people into pits or off of cliffs. Hey! I just came up with the plot for the sequel.

  3. Grave says:

I dont know if 300 should have a sequel. Even if there was I love for it to be about the battle at the end of the film. If they want to put the King back in this fim then it be nice if soliders just told stories about him. Bring him back from the dead is stupid and wouldnt fit in Sparta’s beliefs

  4. Walker says:

    Maybe they do some flashbacks!

    • Rodney says:

They have already suggested that a sequel would take place DURING the events of 300. Kind of fleshing out a handful of the battles in the middle of the story.

  5. Mikeyclt says:

The only thing I can say about him coming back is the fact that in Greek mythology and even stories about Greek history no one really dies. You can always just pop right down to Hades and fetch them. So to say he is completely dead with the Greeks is a stretch. I mean Achillies died because his mom dipped him Ina river but missed one spot and a spear hit him in the foot. Crazy Greeks

    • Rodney says:

Except 300 is not set in mythology.

The very point of their final battle was to make the “god king” bleed to show his people that he was not a god.

    • bigsampson says:

NO DUDE this story is based of a real story….this is not how it went down….it is its own mythology…..this shit never happpened like how the movie was…and it was so far fetched with un realistic babble and fighting…along with concepts that should have not been in this flick…once they did all that this movie to me became one giant movie that is completely not real to history…therefore i see no problem with them bringing any one back to life etc….tel me once in history where normal men fought giants with axe hands….

    • EZELL says:

dude every film is based on some true event so and it is never how it happened so if this rewound history for you I feel bad for you that you cannot appreciate a film for what it is.

But you are right this is based on a battle that took place.

      • Rodney says:

Cars was based on a true event?

Uh.. no. Not ever film is based on a true event. But 300 is speculative fiction revolving around a true historical event.

  6. Matticus says:

Wsn’t it already rumored that they would be fighting in hell? Sounds like they might be leaning toward that plot. I would watch it.

  7. AARON says:

” the producer said of their dilemma after having killed off virtually the entire cast in the first film.”

Lol for some reason that was funny to me. I loved the first, but him returning after getting screwed at the end? This is kinda stupid. I wanna see a sea battle already.

  8. Jeremy says:

I’ll reserve judgment on this one for now, but Frank Miller sucks at writing sequels – anyone every read The Dark Knight Strikes Back? That was just awful.

  9. DG Music says:

And as for the overall idea for a sequel, I do actually agree with you Rick. I think it’s a money-grab but in the sense that ‘oh hey I have a great idea for making us a buck or two’ kind of money-grab. I think they’ll have to come up with something genuinely good to get my attention. Then again I have a lot of faith in Zack Snyder…he’s da man :P

  10. Mike says:

Has no one here ever watched ‘Lost’?

Does the word ‘Flashback’ ring a bell?

    • vargas says:

or he could come back as an apparition.

    • iknewthiswouldhappen says:

He’s going to be seen in flashbacks…

there were close to 8,000 men from all over greece who fought with the spartans. In the end, it was more like 1,200, not 300. And the battle at the “hotgates” wasn’t the only one happenning, there was also a big naval battle, and several other “small” skirmishes going on at the same time.

      • Rodney says:

That’s the historical record. This is speculative fiction only inspired by the original story of the 300. There is no mention in the movie of other conflict happening elsewhere.

  11. Simple Simon says:

I noticed that a few people are thinking along the same lines as I am. Greek myths, stories, and plays are full of heroes having adventures in Hades. Not that hard to imagine the mighty Leonidas challenging the guardians of the underworld to “Molon Labe”.

  12. Can Lena Headley come back too?
    Pretty please?

  13. leeloo says:

    leoniduce!

  14. Kristina says:

He needs to do this movie so he can get back in shape and I can lust after him again. He looks like a bloated hot mess in that hot mess movie The Ugly Truth, and I hate that I can no longer say that he is THE SEX. He used to be, but no longer. It’s the end of an era, people. Someone hold me:(

  15. Chris says:

I don’t see anything good coming out of a sequel to this movie. This is an event in Greek history that shouldn’t be ruined by adding to the story. I mean, the story probably didn’t end the way it ended in the movie, but I think it should be left alone. A sequel is simply a way to make more money. Although, if they do it, I sure hope they get Gerard Butler.

  17. Zach says:

not really digging this…300 was mediocre to begin with..the dialogue was just awful.

  18. SlashBeast says:

I hope the sequel doesn’t degenerate into slo-mo mediocrity. 300 was like a 30 minute film stretched over more than an hour because of the slo-mo.
