Mortal Kombat 3 to film in the Fall?
With the WB throwing money at the already dying Midway game studio to outright buy the rights to most of their library of games, the speculation began as to which of the popular titles they would attempt to adapt to films. Mortal Kombat would have been their most popular, but lets not leave out such concepts DYING for adaptation like Spy Hunter and Joust.
But the rumours seem to point in one direction, and that would be Mortal Kombat 3.
Warner Bros. has bought most of Midway Games’ assets in a bankruptcy court fire sale for $33 million, including the rights to some of their most popular video games like MORAL KOMBAT, SPY HUNTER, and JOUST. WB’s plans for those properties are kept secret for now but they didn’t buy Midway development studios in San Diego and England.Former actor and karate teacher Chris Casamassa, who was a stunt performer playing Scorpion in the original two Mortal Kombat movies. Cassamassa said that he’s set to start filming MORTAL KOMBAT 3 in September.
Now keep in mind this is some wild speculation and the off the cuff statement of a stunt actor doesn’t mean the movie is actually happening.
But if it was happening, is there any life left in the fanbase of Mortal Kombat to justify a film? Even with the wildly successful relaunch of Street Fighter 4 didn’t help The Legend of Chun-Li springboard an ongoing franchise of Streetfighter films (which I had to assume was the intent leaving out their most popular characters) so is there anything worth while in another Mortal Kombat film?
I didn’t mind the first film. It wasn’t great. But Mortal Kombat Annihilation was the first film I was ever tempted to walk out on. Walking out of a film denies you any right to have an opinion on it, so I never do. But that one was close.
Would you want to see Mortal Kombat 3? What if they rebooted it?

I actually wouldn’t mind another Mortal Kombat film….as long as its better than Annihilation.
That’s a pretty low standard.
I don’t really mind another one
Only if they get Christopher Lambert back as Raiden. He was great as the God of Lightning
“I don’t think so…..ha ha ha ha”
Sorry, sorry, had to ;)
They’ve been trying to get this one made for years and years now. I don’t believe a word of it.
Plus, I just don’t think video game movies actually make money. The only ones we’ve seen recently were done on the cheap and they barely made money. I’ll be very interested to see how ‘Prince of Persia’ fares next year. If a big budget videogame movie like that fails, studios probably will just stop making them.
I would actually like to see another Mortal Kombat movie, given they actually took it seriously and put some effort into it. I agree with Matt, Annihilation was a piss poor excuse of a movie, and I hope they don’t repeat their mistakes.
There has been talk of Mortal Kombat 3/ MK Devestation for quite a few years now; questions of returning actors (from the first movie), development hell. To restart or not…
Anyway, I’m not going to speculate if this is going to stink like Mortal Kombat Annihilation. What I can speculate on is that MK3 the movie won’t be shooting in the fall.
How can one know for sure? Well aside from Chris Casamassa, who else is signed up? Christopher Lambert back as Rayden?
By the way, who is directing? According to IMDB’s previous report, mink is in talks. “mink”. A director called “mink”.
His best known credit is the DTV Steven Seagal flick ‘Into The Sun’. All our hopes up just shot up by 50% I’m sure.
mink.
that’s his name.
I was still hoping for the “Joust” adaptation where a writer or two can build up a mythology from scratch while keeping some aspect of the game. Instead, we are getting “Mortal Kombat: Unnecessary”
Oh well. And don’t forget, kids! TEKKEN will be upon us soon!
haha there are some cool ass martial artists and stunt martial artists in tekken, i will see both films for retro sakes but i have no hope for mk3
why do they keep thinking movies like this are a good idea? Did that chun-li movie even make a profit?
What do you mean walking out denies you any right to hold an opinion? I imagine if you walk out, then the movie must be terrible. Hence you feel it is terrible. Hence, wait for it, your opinion is the movie is terrible.
Walking out is practically an opinion itself.
I only walked out of one movie. It was The Majestic. That was crap.
I’ve never walked out on a film b/c good or bad I still paid to see the film, and the theatre I go to doesn’t give refunds…so its just stupid to do so.
Robert, if you are going to walk out on a film because you don’t like the first 10 minutes of it, you can only have an opinion of the first 10 minutes. You have no idea what the rest of the movie is like except to assume it was exactly like the first 10 minutes.
If you walk out on a movie, you didn’t watch the movie and therefore cannot attest to the quality of the movie.
Walking out is fine if you feel so disgusted that you have to, but you also do not get to have an opinion on the rest of the movie you didn’t see.
I liked the first one. A bit cheesy, but what do you expect?
I SO wanted to love the second one…and I couldn’t. It flat out sucked big time. I don’t think they could do a third at this point and get any return. A relaunch maybe, but a sequel, nah.
Too bad really, I liked Robin Shou.
This movie could be made into an amazing flick….not a sequel, i want them to reboot it and make it epic, im all for this. I want to see Sub Zero and Scorpion and Baraka in a modern day movie, not that 90s cheap CGI…
If all movies are cash grabs then this is a good idea, if they make an awesome movie and make epic trailers itll make MILLIONS
If this gets madse im there on opening day
Nightwolf/Raiden FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love everything to do with mortal combat.i enjoyed the movies.robin shou ftw as Liu Kang.i would love to see another.i believe it can only be better with better effects an given the right director.
I think a reboot would be great. It needs a much more compete story and brilliantly new fight cinematography (my vote is the guy who did the fight scenes in the Star Wars Prequels or the guy who did the chrography from Batman Begins and Dark Knight)and some talented actors/martial artists. The exception of Lambert, I loved him as Raiden.
It’s meant to be a reboot of the Mortal Kombat series so there a mix of new actors and original actors so there will be a fresh start so there is no news from director mink and Larry Kasanoff was trying to fight over Midway for the Mortal Kombat IP.
So the actor Chris Casamassa was said that the new MK movie will start filming in September and I don’t think that’s true,if this new Mk movie will have new actors some new ones like Shin Koyamada to play Liu Kang,Jon Foo as Kung Lao and more.
That’s all I have to say for the moment.
Thank You.
BRUCE ACOSTA
AUSTRALIA.
haven’t they been talking about MK3 for so long now? weren’t they going to ignore the second one?
I don’t mind another MK movie and in my mind, it is still possible to make a damn good one. I enjoy the MK characters and their stories allot. Most of which have not been used well in the movies or at all.
It’s just that they can’t seem to come up with good ideas to make the MK games good anymore, so it’s no surprise to me that the game series is falling.
The first one, I liked. The second, well watching that is one of my treasured memories, regardless of what an awful film it is. A third? NO. I refuse to see a third movie. Try, try again with a reboot if anything. And did anyone else notice that in the report it is spelled “MORAL KOMBAT?” It seems to be a Moral Kombat within whoever decides to make this film. XD XD XD
