New Whip It! Trailer Online

By Rodney - July 16, 2009 - 07:54 America/Montreal

The Tubes of You have delivered this sassy trailer for Whip It! Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut in a film about women’s roller derby in the 70s.

This is looking pretty great and should provide a fair bit of fun. I think the trailer gives away a little too much about the parents role in her path of discovery. I have seen multiple sites this morning calling this Juno on Wheels, but I disagree. In Juno, Page was similar in attitude but that’s about it. Juno was the same girl before, during and after the pregnancy and that movie was simply about dealing with her situation. But this one shows a clear progression of a teen forced into beauty pagents by her mother before blazing her own path. It appears to be more of a sense of discovery and a growth for her character.

I am looking forward to this.

Ellen Page is the new Michael Cera.

    • Rodney says:

Except that we have seen Ellen Page play more than one personality.

    • chris...the real one (also a black guy) says:

i would marry ellen page….but she has played other kinds of roles…she was amazing in an american crime as well as hard candy. cera has been george michael in EVERYThING

  2. Royal says:

I think I’m getting old; I don’t like Page or Cera.

  3. Kiddo says:

Will definitely see this! Looks awesome

  4. Jeremy says:

This is set in the 70’s? Why is she wearing a Stryper shirt, then? They didn’t even exist in the 70’s.

    • Rodney says:

Perhaps its in the 80s then. I didn’t see any computers, cell phones or modern cars, so its possible.

Stryper was around in the early 80s.

I liked Juno allot, but mostly because I thought it was pretty original. But this just seems like Juno meets roll derby, so, Eh.

It is great to see Daniel Stern has made a come back to the big screen though. Love that guy.

  6. Not bad, not bad at all. Not really my sort of film, but I reckon I’ll see it with my good lady wife. Comparisons have been drawn between it and Adventureland, but I can’t comment as I’ve only seen trailers for both. I could obviously comment on both trailers, but I’ve got surfing to do ;-) Daniel Stern cracked me up: “I like smart guys, that’s why I married your mother. That, and I knocked her up.” :-)

Looks like a fun night out at the movies to me!

  8. Mladen says:

Brought a smile to my face, which is a great sign.
I didn’t enjoy Juno at all, so I hope this isn’t at all similar.

As for roller derby, I’ve seen one of these events once (its coming back in style a bit these days) and they can get pretty brutal. Like fight club for retro-styled meaty rockabilly chicks. Its insane.
