Could Bill Chott be Three Stooges’ Curly

With all the speculation of casting of the Farrelly Brothers Three Stooges after Jim Carrey dropped out of the project. But the rumour mill is turning and it seems that the Farrelly’s are already talking Curly’s replacement.

And it could be Bill Chott.

Fused Film quotes Bill Chott’s blog:

Big news first. I may have my foot in the door again on the Farrelly Bros. Three Stooges“ How?” you ask.“Oh, and Indian!” I respond…Here’s the scoop. Jim Carrey was cast as Curly in the film but he bowed out. Maybe being bald and fat isn’t his thing. But I’ve been settling into this role for a long time. After shooting the Ringer with The Farrelly Bros. I told them that I was VERY interested in playing the role of Curly. Pete Farrelly sent me a bunch of Curly tapes and DVD’s to study. I put together an audition which you can see by clicking HERE. Pete and Bobby Farrelly already think the world of me and Pete even called to let me know that I was at the top of their list and they hadn’t read anyone else besides Jim Carrey for the role.

Here is the audition reel he mentions above:

I haven’t been exposed to much else he has done, but after seeing this I would rather this guy get the gig than Jim Carrey . Nothing against Jim, but you know if he got the role it would be in that Carrey own silly style (which is fine for Jim Carrey), and frankly this guy channels Curly!

I really hope this guy gets it.

  1. I was critical of Bill’s audition tape the first time I saw it. I told him so,and he was as generous as he could be in his reply. I feel as though I was a little too reactionary. I now believe that if this film is ever made,it had better be with unknowns. Established stars like Jim Carrey are still going to revert to their old schticks. This is not a slap in the face to anyone, but get on with it with unknowns or put it out to pasture! A Stooges fan from way, way, way back.

  2. I am and always will be a huge Jim Carrey fan, but I could not imagine a tall skinny man being Curly.

Bill Chott is by far the best that I have seen and will no doubt do awesome in the role.

    1. Carey was more than willing to put on the weight for the role, but after the film suffered a number of delays he dropped out citing that he would not be willing to continually keep himself unhealthy fat waiting for the movie to start production.

  3. I grew up with Bill, and have had the honor of being on stage with him on several occasions. He was brilliant and versatile in High School, and was always the one we looked to for help and inspiration on stage. He had ‘it’ back then, and it was widely hoped that he would make a mark for himself in entertainment. I used to say, “Bill – someday you are going to say the wrong thing to the right person and be a star.” I couldn’t have been more right. As I understand, the movie is to include the 3 Stooges life behind the camera as well as on the silver screen. I think it would be great to see the tragedy behind the comedy, and I also think no one could be a better Curly than Bill Chott.

  4. My kids have watched the clip, and were ROLLING in the floor.

No disrespect to “insiders in the business” but
there is nothing more credible than a ten-year-old boy’s reaction!

(Isn’t that what the entertainment business was supposed to be about???)

We can’t wait to see Curly … Chot-style on the big screen.

For a new generation, this will be the Curly they know and love, and imitate. After seeing this clip, anyone else would be a disappointment!

  5. If a Stooges movie is to be produced, Bill Chott is curly in every way shape and funny form. Bill brings the energy shown in this sampling in everything that he does. I have seen it first hand! He wears his weight and uses it in his comedy. Jim Carrey I am glad that you came to your senses and got out of Bill’s way for this role.

  6. sorry but in the end it is a curly impersenation. jerry howard/curly was on another planet when it came to his art and i’ve seen curly impersenations come and go. sure doing bits and pieces of curly on audition tape is good, but when you get the three together and they start trying to slap and push each other around with the timing of a seasoned ballet dancer, it’s a whole different ball game and the real stooges had over 10 years live performances to perfect this before they put it on film. i agree he drops character when he is not doing something…at the end of the day you just want to pop in the real boys and enjoy. sorry.

  7. I grew up on the Stooges and get a the same feeling watching this video as I did when a child. Sure Bill is funny, but he also has that innocence that Curly embodied. That is what makes him an effective choice to play the role.

  8. Bill would make a great Curly. He doesn’t have to mimic Curly to perfection (although I think he comes pretty close), he merely has to sell himself as a believeable Curly, and I think he does that quite well. I can’t think of anyone who would be better than the role. Certainly not Jim Carrey.

  9. I am a man, and I’m not a huge fan of the Stooges (I liked them with Iggy Pop).

But, I can’t help but believe that a more contemporary Stooges film would be, at the very least, intriguing to me.

I think Bill Chott is definitely the guy to play Curly.

I would respond to Aaron’s critique this way: there are no other Stooges in the room, there’s nothing to react to. If it was really an issue, the Farrellys would take care of that while they were shooting.

  10. hehe

He seems like more of a Joe Besser because Joe was a poor man’s Curly.

Sean Penn, Jim Carrey, and Benico Del Toro = Brilliant

Anything else will be weak sauce.

    1. I disagree. Benicio is the only one that seemed anything at all like the character he was going to portray.

I wasn’t at all interested in this to begin with, and now I am more intrigued now that a more appropriate cast is attached.

  11. He’s got the body language down… Just needs to work on his facial expressions when nothing’s going on… Curly was always somewhat animated whereas this guy seems to take breaks (in his face) when nothing surprising is happening.

  12. The guy is not bad. He does a somewhat decent Curly impression. I’ll give him that. But he just seems to strike me more as a Joe Besser type than a Curly.

    1. Jim was never confirmed, just approached. He backed off and it had NOTHING to do with Penn leaving. And Sean Penn was replaced by Giamatti who I think will play the role much better.

This casting news is only making me MORE interested in this. Considering I had no interest at all when it first was announced (especially with that unsettling cast)

The current actors work much better, and this guy would be the icing on the cake.

  13. This is a good impersonation, I’ll give him that.

    HOWEVER

The Stooges are the REAL Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Curly Howard. There is absolutely no need for the Farrelly Bros. to do their own version of them on film. Come up with their own troop of wacky comedians and have THEM get in their own wacky adventures.

Either that, or just redistribute the original Stooges shorts to theaters and run them before features. Now THAT is an idea I can get behind.

    1. I would have to agree with you, i don’t see this working out in anyway or form. I just can’t imagine a three stooges movie working and i too think it should be left alone.
