Looks Like Kate Beckinsale Is Coming Back For “Underworld” 4, 5 and 6

Although the Underworld movies have never made a fortune at the box office, you have to keep in mind that they’ve been very profitable due to the fact that they’ve managed to always produce them for a relatively small budget.

Now, most of the success of Underworld can be attributed to Kate Beckinsale wearing really tight leather. But as it looked like Beckinsale’s career was taking off full steam and she was on the cusp of becoming a legitimate leading “A” list actress in this town, she (in all fairness… WISELY) decided to walk away from the Underworld franchise to pursue her future Oscar collection.

But a funny thing happened… her career has not taken off like gangbusters as most of us (including me) suspected it would.

So, with a free dance card it looks like Kate Beckinsale is going to be returning to the Underworld franchise for a reported new trilogy of films to start production sooner rather than later. It’s hasn’t been confirmed 100% yet, but the people I’m talking to say it’s almost a lock.

So what do you think? Would you be interested in a new Underworld trilogy if Beckinsale is back on board?

  1. Hell yes! A new trilogy is a great idea. Not only do these films perform well theatrically, but dvd they are HUGE.

What would be especially cool is if they can do these films somehow back to back. Just budget all three for one lump sum and get a bit more bang for their buck. Bring on some cool new villain and make them epic and more appealing. I guarentee the next one with Kate and a “Selene is back” sort of ad campaign. will be the highest grossing film in the series thus far. And if it’s an improvement on previous entries the following films will do even better.

Very smart move for Kate to do this. It’s an iconic character. She owns the role. And it’s not something she can choose to do 15 or 20 years down the line ala Harrison Ford. Her character is immortal so best do this while you still can. Years from now she will look back at it with pride because whatever she does later, she will always have this series as something that she was the primary focus of.

  2. ok i think it wuld b sweet if they made an entirely new trilogy with beckinsale bcuz evolution was so freakin good and yes rise of the lycans was the best in the series but theres not much left 2 tell in that story cuz sonya is dead but rise of the lycans was da best vampire/wearwolf movie i have ever seen but beckinsale was incredibly good in the 1st 2 films and i wuld go c all of the new movies id go 2 the midnight showing and i think they shuld relese the new movies in da summer cuz everytime they relese their movies its da worst possible tming nand they dont make anythin.

  3. Rhona or Kate? Either works for me.
Vampires with Guns or Vampires with Crossbows? Guns, every time.

I enjoyed the first one, thought the second was ‘okay’ for what it was, and really felt the third was lacking, despite trying to be the boldest of the three. I’d quite happily watch three more modern day movies, taking them on the level they’re intended.

  4. I enjoy the Underworld movies. I like what they bring to the vampire and werewolf mythology. And like someone here has said, with all the old leaders dead what will become of their races. Internal feuds…same old war or will new battles be waged against the new breeds? And I think it would be great to have Beckinsale back as Selene in the midst of all this.

  5. hell yes. Granted the latest released Underworld had some major disappointing aspects to it, but I’ll go ahead and say that was probably due to the budget they were on… well, except for the “love” scene, which was terrible beyond belief. just cut that right out of the movie and it’ll improve it a bit.

  6. these films have a nack at completely exceeding my expectations… so bring it on. cant wait.

in anyone elses hands this franchise wouldve been dead in the very first film. however the films have a great balance of an original mythology with interesting characters while still delivering on what we come to expect from a vamp vs werewolf movie.. and for a low budget.

  7. I am interested. But if they’re actually going to be better then the 2nd and 3rd films. I liked the first one allot, but it still felt lacking. I was expecting sooo much more in the 2nd film, but that didn’t happen. So then I had faith in the 3rd one, specially since it took place in the mid evil times. I liked it better then part 2, but it was still worse then part 1.

To me it’s not that hard to make a kick ass series about an all out war between vampires and werewolves, but for some reason, to these people, it is.

But then again, it shouldn’t be that hard to make a kick ass movie series about an all out giant transforming alien robot war, but apparently, for Michael Bay anyway, it is.

I just hope they can find some better writers for these new Underworld’s. Rise of the Lycans had a whopping 6 different writers who worked on it and, well, ya…

  8. I’m a big fan of hers (pitter-pat-pitter -pat!), agree with the views on her career ‘taking off’. “Whiteout” has been delayed, what–a year and half or longer, “Snow Angels” was suberb but a bit of a downer. “Nothing but the Truth was um, adequate but predicatble ansd had a lame “what th’ hell?” type of ‘surprise’ ending.
Supposedly she is to star with DiNero, but his career has been really floundering of late. So maybe this will be good for her. The scripts have to improve though. Selene will (probably) Michael’s child and from that point, the ‘new’ race will emerge…..I’m guessing….but hey, who doesn’t like a hot English rose in black leather, I mean–c’mon????

  9. I imagine this is great. The way Underworld: Evolution ended, the war is far from over. But now, with all the leaders dead, chaos reigns. New people trying to take the top spot, which causes in-house feuds, I’d imagine especially within the vampire race. Perhaps even the Lycans.

  10. I think tying herself down to a 3 additional films is a bad idea. The Underworld movies have been OK, but not ‘Great’ in my opinion.

Seems like a money grab to keep going back to the well, and Vampire films are already oversaturating the market.

  11. I thought the third film was the best of the series; it really surprised me. But I was unaware that there is more story to tell. I suppose there is the idea that, being a vampire, one can live longer and the clan is fairly decimated.

    4,5 and 6 eh?

Is Selene still the lead character?

  12. this is just unnecessary!
I’m not a fan of these Underworld movies. To me, it’s just a ripoff of Matrix, Blade, and a lot of other action movies. The first one even stole an action scene from Nemesis.

    1. Bike seats don’t have hands. Or hearts. Or any sort of consciousness. So you might as well just say that if you could, you would give up your humanity to be her bike seat. That’s quite frightening.

  13. Great news, since I love seeing Beckinsale back at her vampire ways and tight leather. Wow, though, a new trilogy? I wonder where they are going to go with it.

    1. I enjoyed the movies, but not for the story. Thought they created a cool world and I really enjoyed their interpretation of vampires and werewolves. Nice dark setting as well. Story was definitely a low point, so if they get some good writers it would be nice.

    2. It’s not the story or premise that bothered me so much as the plot. Without plot, effective action, drama, etc are impossible. Underworld had a superb and stylish first action sequence, but in many ways just plummeted from there.
